Post to discuss about the most important regional clubs tournament of Oceania Football Confederation.

Today I had acess with the draw of the tournament for the 2020 edition after a brief talk with a president from a club from Vanuatu.

Timing of this?
Do eastern suburbs still have a working relationship with Ole?

Torslanda season timing conflict?

The group stage is set to take place between Feb 12 and Mar 10 (based off when the NZ national league draw gets funky), with the quarterfinals on April 4 and 5, and the semifinals and final at some stage after April 19.

No – Ole are now formally partnered with Team Wellington, though their influence at Eastern Suburbs remains clear to see and Declan Edge was a keen spectator at their last home game.

The Swedish fifth tier starts in April, so no conflict. Owen Parker-Price and Dom Wooldridge would be handy pickups for Suburbs if they were interested in returning.

I must say it is interesting to see the OFC Champions League draw seemingly being done in private.

Don't hold your breath on Torslanda players coming back this summer.

It will be a shame if they're not going to play anywhere, even if only from January. Will probably mean Dom and Owen fade from OlyWhites contention.

when was the last time the champions league was held in NZ? Any plans for this to happen in the future?

Auckland City and Team Wellington hosted quarterfinals this year, but got drawn away for the semifinals where they lost.

One of the groups was in Auckland in 2018, and knockout matches where hosted there and in Wellington – and the same in 2017.

In 2016 the whole competition was held in Auckland, though one of the three groups was originally meant to be hosted in Wellington.

North Harbour Stadium, Trusts Arena, and Centre Park have been the venues in Auckland of late. North Harbour now a no-go as it's a baseball diamond in summer, but Trusts could be an option.

Well it's only an assumption that they won't playing somewhere come Jan/Feb...

A lot of people here have no clue about the football landscape in Sweden. They also just look at the results and assume that clubs higher up the ladder are judging individual players on that. Even more, they assume that because the results are bad that people in Sweden didn't take notice of the style of football and what the project is at Torslanda. It astonishes me how many people still underestimate Declan.

What do you know a club team from the Islands, with a goal keeping howler/brain fart!

Kohei Matsumoto (ex Ham Wanderers, Waitak & Hawkes Bay United) got 20 mins plus ET off the bench for Hienghène Sports.

You guys were talking about the chances of ES in the Group A; well, you may know already the current champions Hienghène. I just wrote about last signings of Galaxy and Hekari for the tournament. They can beat Eastern Suburbs, both of them, the Lilywhites are still favourites but it won't be a disaster if they can't grab all three points against the Vanuatu and PNG side.

https://oceaniafootballcenter.home.blog/2020/01/06... -> English striker in Galaxy

http://oceaniafootballcenter.home.blog/2019/12/16/... -> Foreigners of Hekari United

Galaxy also has two Brazilians - a central defender and a midfielder - and two Solomon Islands international, one will count as local player because he just got their citizenship. Most of the Ni-Vanuatu players of the team are part of the national team, as Bong Kalo, Kensi Tangis and Joseph Iaruel.

Hekari has many players of PNG National Team - as Michael Foster, Koriak Upaiga and David Muta - and signed two Solomon Islanders recently. They already have one RB from Solomon Islands in the team.

Also, this article says Tuapapa from the Cooks have withdrawn as they couldn't prove three of their players had been vaccinated against measles.

Pity - they are my fav OFC CL club, a true underdog!

The right to play at the Club World Cup in Qatar in December*.

*Assuming FIFA don't change their minds over it, but consider that unlikely.

Wow, on the evidence of Solomon Warriors vs AS Tiare, the standard of goalkeeping in the islands is MUCH improved. Check out the penalty save from the Tiare keeper in particular

This year's Club World Cup going ahead in December will depend on a lot of factors such as the UEFA, Asian, Oceania and CONCACAF champions leagues being completed.

There is no certainty over that.

Next year's new format Club World Cup is being rescheduled due to UEFA Euro 2020 and Copa America 2020 being shifted to that time slot in 2021:

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/coronavirus/120360087/coronavirus-euro-2020-postponed-to-2021-amid-pandemic

"June 2021 was occupied by the UEFA Nations League final tournament of four teams, plus the start of FIFA's inaugural 24-team Club World Cup. It is due to be hosted in China and feature eight European clubs but no broadcasting or sponsor deals have yet been announced.

"I would like to thank FIFA and its president, Gianni Infantino, who has indicated it will do whatever is required to make this new calendar work," Ceferin said.

In a FIFA statement, Infantino said he was ready to ask China's government and football federation to accept a delay of the Club World Cup. That means the tournament could be played later in 2021, or in either of the next two years."

FIFA conference call today to discuss new dates for next year's Club World Cup:

OFC Champions league has been cancelled for 2020. 8 remaining clubs to receive $25 K. CWC still up in the air and if it happens (very unlikely) then an entrant will have to be found by some means ? 2021 still planned for but question marks surely

As far as i know the 2021 O league will not place before July this year.

I am wondering how that will work as :

1. The two New Zealand qualifiers from last season are Auckland City and Team Wellington . Will they still exist as at July ?

2. If they do exist in some form or another then their players will likely be registered with "winter" clubs . Can they be loaned back ?

3. Do the top 2 in this seasons premiership qualify for 2022 (and the same two questions above then  apply) or do the top 2 in the new league qualify ?.

I am not sure as to the future of the CWC so it may be an academic question only.

Going forward I wonder how NZ participation in the O league will be managed. I understand that the top 2 clubs in the "Super League" will qualify. Given that the early rounds at least are played outside of the new season then surely these qualifiers will be at a disadvantage ?

Given the uncertainty of the CWC after this year then the financial model of the O League (already flaky) may be stuffed anyway ?

Yes, It's going to be very tricky to find an Oceania qualifier for the second of the two FIFA Club World Cups to be held this year, in December in Japan (first one of course being in February in Doha).

https://www.besoccer.com/new/japan-to-host-fifa-cl...

"It means there will be two Club World Cups in the same year, with Qatar hosting the 2020 edition between February 1 and 11 before another seven-team edition goes ahead in Japan in December...

A lucrative, revamped 24-team Club World Cup, including eight sides from Europe, was due to be played in China [in 2021], but the expanded competition will not now start until a later date..."

I'm sure that the Club World Cup will continue from 2022 in the revamped 24 team format if FIFA are so keen on it that they are having two Club World Cups this year, despite the fixture congestion with the Euros, Copa america, World Cup qualifiers etc.

Doesn't make any difference but are NZ's entrants the two teams from last year or this year ? Auckland City and Tee Dubs in both cases but might have been interesting if they were different .Auckland City will probably still exist but unlikely Tee Dubs will . Who will take their place. In any case NZ's entrants likely to be weaker than in past years. Bet the island nations are happy about that

The rules of the new National League allow current franchise teams to sign a memorandum of understanding with an existing club and enter the National round. So Miramar can play in the Central League and if they qualify for the National round they can play under the Team Wellington banner for that round and hence the OFC Champions League (if it goes ahead) and possibly the Club World Cup

The 2021 OFC Champions League NZ entrants are based off the 2019/2020 Handa Premiership season.
It's still not clear who will represent NZ in any 2022 OFC Champions League (i.e. whether it will be ACFC and Team Wellington again based of 2020/2021 Handa Premiership season, or the teams that qualify under the new league structure in 2021).

Not sure if this has been mentioned elsewhere? Will they bother going if they have to do 2 weeks MIQ upon return (going through Xmas-New Years), that they would likely have to pay for?

I guess if they lose game 1, they are back in NZ Dec 10-11th, so out of MIQ Dec 24-25th?
https://www.oceaniafootball.com/auckland-city-nominated-for-the-fifa-club-world-cup-2021/

Looks like at this stage 2021 CWC is scheduled to be in Japan from 9th-19th December 2021.

Given the amount of money they would get for being at the CWC, even for just one game, pretty sure they could handle MIQ costs. Also not like previous seasons where they need to get the National League games rescheduled
Biggest issue for them would be securing MIQ places

But would the players be happy to do a 2 week MIQ stretch including likely Christmas Day, for just 90 mins? Esp any guys with young families.

Will also be tough to go from Northern/NZ National League to playing a J League side first up. Doubt they would easily get the extensive pre tourney warmup schedule they have often got in the past, in this Covid world.

It's 90 minutes at the CWC the biggest stage some of them will ever get to play on. Those that don't may opt out but there would be plenty wanting to go
Also as its a tournament they (the players) are allowed to accept a share of the prize money they receive so it could be reasonably lucrative
