Jasper and Scoullar travelled down and got travel exspenses covered e.g Petrol..  I think there's more chance Tech signing Rodney fleming for $150 a game than brand.

yea petrol was covered but no playing fee. maybe if brand saved up the 150 a week he could afford laser eye surgery by the end of the yr. tech already have the best striker in the league in burgess for free

paying the players is not the answer , there arnt many players in Dunedin that warrant being paid to play , Teams like Cavy and Tech are entrenched in local football history and with history and reputation players flock to be apart of a good setup and a good club which Tech and Cavy are , they have worked hard over the years to get where they are now , if only some other teams in the league took this approach maybe they to could be as good as us , Earlier in the forum someone was talking about Braes and Northern and feeling sorry for the fact that players go elswhere to find good football , well Im sorry but with some of the biggest numbers in the junior competition they dont do very well in turning them into good senior players , once again create a pleasant environment and they will play , maybe even for OU and get $ 200 a week to play !!!!

Keano sounds like he or she has some good advice on how to run a quality team ? , Does anyone agree with paying players or should a win bonus be in place ?? for teams playing in top local footy or NZFC

Transition from youth to senior... A lot of clubs lack a programme to move the junior players to seniors. In Dunedin Green Island/Mosgiel have very big junior clubs but struggle to transition the juniors to seniors. Caversham technically have no junior club.
If these clubs could build the success they have with the junior programme to the seniors they would do well.
The Onslow document would be very helpfull to theses clubs.

For me the transition from junior to senior level at Mosgiel was weird as the only way I got in to it was one of the guys i used to play with was in the 3rds team and told me to turn up and then i recruited some of my mates from there. The better players would probably be better looked after but there didn't seem to be something in place to help that transition, like you say, and i think it's still the same. Maybe some of our guys do go to other clubs as well not sure, and then you get people like me who move cities too.

Would it be fair to say Kings would be a sort of youth system for Cavvy?

Otago V Manawatu Preview
Head to Head: Played 12, Otago 2 wins, Manawatu 6 wins, 4 draws

Otago United (LW)

The players: Terry Phelan has stuck with his winning squad from last weekend. Blair Scoullars knee injury keeps him on the sidelines for another 2-3 weeks.

The vital statistics: David Dugdale is already just one goal shy of matching the effort of Otagos top scorer from last season (John Lang 3 goals)

Squad List: 1-Liam Little (GK), 2-Rys Henderson, 3-Tristan Prattley, 4-Barry Gardiner, 5-Colin Falvey (Captain), 6-Michael Smith, 7-Robbie Deeley, 9-Tom Jackson, 10-David Dugdale, 11-Andy Coburn, 12-Aaron Burgess, 13-Callum Flaws (GK), 14-Sean Brand, 15-Morgan Day 17-Tim Horner, 18-Tom Connor.

YoungHeart Manawatu (WW)

The players: Injured Korean striker Park Sung-Bae is the only player missing from last weeks missing squad.

The vital statistics: Manawatu are the only team yet to concede a goal.
Manwatus best start to a season was three straight wins and a draw in 2006-07.

Squad list: 1-Chris Marsh (GK), 2-Adam Cowan, 3-Pablo Yackson, 4-Jan Weissenfeldt, 6-Matt Kennedy, 7-Jason Hayne, 8-Nathan Cooksley, 9-Gusatvo Saralegui, 10-Leo Shin, 11-Scott Robson, 16-Raf de Gregorio, 18-Finlay Milne, 19-Andrew Bailey (GK), 20-Gonzalo Nieres, 22-Cory Chettleburgh.

He's named the same 16 man squad for this week.

Personally I'd make just one change to the 11

                                  Little
   Prattley       Falvey       Horner      Smith
             Deeley        Coburn      Gardiner
            Jackson       Dugdale     Burgess

Subs: Flaws, Henderson, Connor, Day, Brand.

The starting 11 is a reasonable team but on the bench there is absolutly nothing worth looking at.
This squand doesn't include Scoullar (injured), The Germans and Chisholm (not fit).

and while i like what Rab Smith has doen for Otag Football wahat he's wrtiten on NZFC.co.nz is bullsh*t.

"... plus a couple sharp Roslyn-Wakari lads Sean Brand and Tommy Connor."

To be honest when Brand and Connor were bought on with 15 minutes to go i thought we'ed lose it at the death. They were both lost out there and that was against Canterbury against waitak they'll get killed.

Would he really going to swap the fullbacks over - not too sure how well they would go on their bad foot. Thought Henderson is holding that right flank alright - he may need to be a little more confident on the ball and push up more often but a part from that I would leave him in there. Wouldn't mind seeing a German hit the bench? Or are they no good - I was talking to a squad player a week or so ago and he reckoned at least one of them were looking solid.
I agree with the comment regarding the NZFC write-up Otagofan - why is he even bringing up the SPL teams? It's about Otago at the end of the day??

Would change Deeley (don't know what other options there are?), he was lost on Sunday against a poor team. Would have been a tough game for him, the 4-3-3 formation may have made his positional play difficult. (Usually enjoy his play for Cavvie, just not sure of him at this level).

I thought the 1st half the midfield was dominated by Cantabs but was impressed with how Otago

Tom (Sub) was like a hedgehog seeing two moons, when the subs were made I thought the same thing. Detracted from the team and added nothing.

I'm not sure about Otago until I see them against YHM this weekend, I think they are better than last year but whether they have made a big enough gain?

I can't see Phelan changing the starting line up, the old never change a winning team should ring true.
Hopefully the bench might strengthen though with Robert and Martin Genshur and maybe Big Bill Chisholm getting amongst it finally. Gives the team so much more depth with them involved.
I'm picking a draw at the weekend although they are some juicy odds for Otago.
Odds are $3.40 Otago, Draw $3.20, Manawatu $2.00

I agree with both Think Phelen will stay with last weeks team because it was a winning one although I think if Henderson dosent play better in his 3rd game he will be lucky to keep his spot.Scoular not back yet?Id like to see chisom come off the bench this weekend and pushing coburn into a more attacking role, and maybe get a 1st look the germans if there transfer comes through?

There wasn't any talk about the germans on NZFC so there aloud to play?

1-0 Otago Falvey will get the winner

Heard a conversation this morning that chisholm will be on the bench , Phelan doesnt have to confirm his team until kickoff , so I guess he will take note of both germans and chisholm at the training tommorrow , both germans have been released to play , their international transfer was held up hence the wait

I would have prattley at left back and smith at right back ??

I thought the atmosphere at sunnyvale was pretty good last week. It had a real good family feel to it. I know $10 has annoyed some people but its basically just a donation to help keep the team alive and 2 hours of entertainment on a Sunday, certainly more fun than gardening.

I agree but in saying that I had a season ticket with a twenty buck saving and you got to go up the top on the balcony as shown below. This provided a fantastic view and you got a better perspective of the far side of the field but in saying that as a whole the sunnyvale was suprisingly good.

Time to get serious in this forum ? , Henderson is not up to it and Falvey didnt have his best game , out of the middle three Deeley was probably the better , front three worked tirelss with little reward but also has no postive support from midfield ,
Any more comments on this team ??

What was going on...

Agree Deeley had a great game, Phelan took him off and put a lumbering centre back on in his place. (I think he was trying to close up shop)
YHM looked like they were fitter, well outplayed for the first 40 minutes but then took over and got stronger as the game wore on. Haynes came into his own as the space became available later in the game. Raf may lack the box to box ability but he was class in his touch and distribution.

Better do some work,

Felt Henderson was alright to be honest - contained most attacks that went down his side. Think it would be a bit harsh to pick out a player when I think you need to look at a back four as a whole. They have conceded 6 goals in 3 games which obviously isn't good enough. Whether Henderson is the one that goes or not something does need to change in there? Utd looked good for periods in the match but a half an hour period where they lost their heads sunk them which in all honesty was pretty disappointing as that is 3 points given away as far as I am concerned. One positive is that they look like they can score goals, which is something that has eluded most Otago teams in the past.
