otagos so bad they had to borrow half of manawatus kit apparently tried to take off with some of it as well. poor side and time for a new coach?? who cares what your coach did as a player with a record like his and obviously poor recruitment. for a guy with his playing rep i'm sure if he tried he could get some half decent former pros tht would be better than the imports he's got over his time in otago

47, Feedback is not Sam Wilkinson (even though the pair share the same dodgy spelling)

But like Feedback, I have heard Sam could be back. Not for Waikato, but turning out for Ham Wanderers this winter.

That's good. I know he's taken a slagging here from some of you, but he is a genuine character, and it will be good to see him back in the 'hood -- even if it is at wanderers :)

Anyway, to add some token Otago flavour to this post, when they were last up here i was impressed with the teenager Tom Jackson. scored a fantastic goal, and looked lively.

However i didn't care for terry phelan's publicly disparaging attitude towards some of his players. can't imagine it did much for team morale.

I don't deny Jackson is a good player but i feel he isn't phyiscal enough to make at NZFC level.

Bright future for this lad - haven't been able to see much action this season but he has chipped in with a few goals. I should imagine he will be snaapped up shortly.

Yeah he is a passionate player and puts himself about. Very raw (reminds me a little of Sam Messam but a better skill base and more co-ordination) but has got a great future under a good coach that can help him develop and polish.

This guy is something else and only 17!I 1st heard about him a couple of years ago from a friend that was taking him in age group otago and he told me to watch out for this guy in a couple of years and what do you no he scored a bucket load of goals for caversham and now is starting to show some serious form for otago running people around Sunnyvale all day yesterday.I hope those NZ selectors can see all the way down to Dunedin for once and get this guy in there under 20 setup

So..Double header for the Otago boys this weekend Waitk then Werllington idealy they would love 4 points from these two games but waitak away well thats a really tough task but wellington at home they should be targeting 3points from that game against a wellington team they dominated in the 1st round for 89 minutes. Colin Falvey still a game suspension but could be back for the sunday clash. Any news on changes/injuries for the weekends games? Also ive got some hot inside word from a couple of players saying that Steven "The chosen one" Brooks has been hanging around United training for the last couple of weeks and could be joining the coaching crew to try and help them through this wooden spoon battle..Any truth in this??Maybe he has some tips for Phelan and Malcom after his days at northern.

Starting team and squads would be great if anyone has news!

If Phelan is the problem then what is the solution?

Though I have been disappointed with the imports Phelan has brought in I don't think he has a huge amount of NZFC talent to work with.

And are you suggesting Brooks as a replacement coach?
Permalink Permalink

Brooks is well out of his depth in any form of coaching , something about a coach and a paper bag comes to mind , just look at northerns record under him , nothing , nothing and nothing , mind you relagation and brooks have always gone together

Surely Steve Fleming deserves a chance?

On Phelan, surely the results mean that someone, anyone deserves a chance. Whatever has happned it hasn't worked for him or Otago, they can't keep going on with a failed regime can they?

I think Brooks would bring a love and passion to the team that hasn't been around that Otago setup as much this this year as other years and could really bring another dimension to the thinking and all round play to this Otago side. Im not suggesting at all that he will or could be next in line for the job tho,Coaches that could be next in line?? Well 1st off it would have to be Malcom Fleming having been with Unitd for 2 or 3 season,Steve Fleming winning a hat full of SPL titles with caversham,Brooks( Done nothing),Even John MaCellan who is coming back to Dunedin from the UK the former Caversham coach could be a long shot? I read an article today on www.waikatofc.co.nz saying there may be no NZFC next season and they may look at going back to the old format with Clubs ie Dunedin Tech and Caversham i think this could be the best way but if Dunedin had only one team and say in this case it was Dunedin Tech would you have players such as Tim Horner,Robbie Deeley,Rhys Henderson and Dave Dugdale all Caversham through and through do the unthinkable and cross the fence to there arch rivals and likewise with players such as Burgess, Scoullar and Coburn(although once caversham is now a Tech man) if Caversham were to be the team.. Just a thought anyway.

So last weeks team was.. Any players injured/dropped for the weekend that anyone has heard of?

little

Horner  Henderson Smith Prattley

Jackson  Kelly Deeley  Coburn

Burgess  Dugdale

Short man's disease is all Phelan has offered for three years.

Your kidding me on Brook's, nice guy but kinda of like Northern, hard working but not getting anywhere..
For me Fleming (and it ain't Malcolm) has to be the coach next year.
Terry Parle is an excellent coach but he seems to shoot himself in the foot.

I asked the question of someone down there tied up with Otago football as to why Terry hadn't left and the response was 'Who says he hasn't tried?'

The inference was that his entire 3 year contract was being enforced and that Terry had tried to cut it short.

You can debate the nusances, merits and downfalls of that all you like.

From memory Phelan came on the scene in the 05/06 season so his 3 years should have been up last year. Agree that unless you are close enough to the organisation it's hard to say what their decisions are based on but you still have to wonder where they see him taking football in the region.

Can't see what any of the other coaches that have been mentioned would bring to the table that Phelan hasn't. Spend less money on a coach and more on some quality imports.

I don't think the issue down there is imports and splashing money on imports is not the best fix. Waitakere did that in season 2 with the Cardoza boys and Shannon Cole. Where did they finish that year. Adriano Pimenta, the few Asian players that have been in Manawatu/Wellington - Imports in this league have not had the impact that they were hyped to have. Kevin Taylor was ok for you guys so there is a counter argument again.

A team from Dunedin made the Chatham Cup final this year... That says that there is ability in the region and while I don't know the ins and outs of it all, I would ask if the strongest possible team is being fielded every week.

Went and watched the Waitakere Otago game and unfortunately, Otago were never in it despite the politelness of the report on NZFC.co.nz. Very disappointed and they played with a severe lack of ticker.

Far too often they gave the ball away, and then did it in dumb positions or kicked it 40 yards long into empty space which the Waitakere keeper was able to receive as a kind of sweeper and just distribute it at will. Waitakere broke the game down and played it like it was miniture posession grid games like you do at training all around the park. 3v3 here, 4v3 here etc and just never let Otago have it. Otago rarely marked Jake Butler in the middle of the pitch and it was like Otago were treating him like royalty giving him his own personal slab of field in the middle 3rd. Far too often Waitakere were able to just play 3-4 simple small passes out of anywhere and it turned into a Totori/Krishna running at goal. It really was disappointing and they missed Colin Falvey big time.

The only person that showed any gumption was Liam Little who made some good saves to stop it blowing out to more. I think Otago had maybe 1 threatening chance?? If Milicich was disappointed with that then he has some very high standards of football.
