Well there isn't two Redwoods so I'm guessing he meant to just have him at left back all though he does look a real threat going forward, showed great skill last Saturday.  Why would you leave out Rodeka? Agree with Connor at right-back though.

Spoke to Fridge this morning, This is the team for the weekend. Seamus and Andy are good to go. After hearing how poor they looked against a team retiree's on Saturday and Tuesday, I hold little to no hope for this weekend. Where are the goals coming from? Mcbride has the athleticism but not didnt stand out in the southern league. I don't think French's bite is half as strong as his bark. Dont know much about Ruka?? I would like to see Kelly at 10.

How did McBride not stand out in the Southern league? the guy was an absolute animal, such a great threat with his size and pace and is definitely capable of poaching some goals! I reckon French will be great, the guy is probably a better finisher than Tom Jackson. With less skill but more direct which is good as this season with a lack of creativity through the middle it will be key to use the pace and skill out wide and to put balls into the box for our big men to attack.

Ben O'Farrells goal was one of the nicest goals I've ever seen by an Otago side. Goal Keeper to goal in about six seconds.

Sounds very direct?! Wouldn't think that type of football would be getting any praise on here - let alone being called "one of the nicest goals I've ever seen".

Liam Whittaker threw it to Hamish Cotter who turned nicely and played an inch perfect ball, along the ground, that split the defence to an on running Ben O'Farrell, Ben O'Farrell had a look up on the outside of the box and chipped the keeper. That is so much different to pumping it over the top to someone with more pace then the defence and getting lucky against the keeper

It was a good goal, showing the class of Hamish Cotter but the man needs to get forward more! He's very good at slipping in passes and feeding the strikers, although felt like Ben Kiore didn't get enough service on Sunday.  Interesting how Kev fielded a bit of a B team, giving people game time? or just a lack of depth, don't understand the starting selection of Whittaker in goal and Kinghorn on the wing and surely we have a better crop of talent in Otago that Kev is forced to play Karl Northey again at right-back!? good news from the game is that he picked up an injury so hopefully that lasts.

McBride didn't play this season, was back in Scotland

My line up would be;

                         Batty

     Ferg/Jude    Joy    Prattley

Connor     Hogan    Ridden    Redwood

           Rodeka             Ryder

                       French

If Connor can cover Judes slow ass then you can have the big lug there if not ferg is a safer option but could be risky having only one tall player in the back 3.  Looking forward to seeing some of the new signings though, Ruka, Mobberley and Kelly and see how they fit in.  Still rate young Josh Stewart as a player, either to stick up top or hold in the middle of the park.

Fridge won't be flying in players to sit on the bench

No one in this squad comes close to replacing Jackson in any aspect.

I'm not sure who Karl Northey is. Nor do I know how good he may or may not be. That being said, you should NEVER be happy to see a player get injured, and especially not one that "lasts". That is disgraceful. A B See yourself out

Didn't say I was happy that he is injured but just good because now someone else who is better can step in, such as Tim O'Farrel or you'd be better off putting Connor Neil there, though it isn't his natural position but he did play there a wee bit last season.  Really shouldn't be taking a comment like that so seriously Samba, if anything you should probably see yourself out.

"Waitakere had to deal with a spell of Southern pressure in the second period but were equal to everything the hosts threw at them. “They put two big men up top and went route one. We had to defend pretty solidly for 15 or 20 minutes but we came through that and created another three or four one-on-ones but, again, we didn’t take them,” Shelley said"

Don't like Kelly at Attacking Midfield too be honest, hoping we haven't seen the best of him.

Sounds like Southern had some bad luck with the goals conceded.

Kelly did not play attacking mid for Cashmere Technical was deeper.

Looking at the game reports sounds like Southern never had much ball and by passed the midfield

Bad luck - yes, but Southern didn't make many chances themselves. If anything, you expect a bit of fight and energy and willingness to work but there was none of that, other than from the substitutes and Redwood.

Kelly tried to press from midfield but was let down by the rest of them who sat off. Prattley looked assured at the back but overall it just seemed like there was just no direction or strategy. Then when the big men came on up front, it provided them with a target and thats why they seemed to get better.

Reports that Karl Northey has returned to S.U training this week. It's a bit unfortunate for the southern boys who seemed to find some form while he was away..

Big game today, will be interesting to see if he gets thrown back into the line-up? Connor Neil looked good playing right-back in last weeks victory against Manawatu

I assume you are talking about Stu Kelly from the the mens team? Would agree if you were meaning him or even Matt 'Kelly' from the youth team.

You what? A striker. Thought they put the ball in the net not play like a defender when in front of goal.

A World Cup winner mentioned to always hit it early and hit it hard, he got taught that as a young un. Must have worked for him as only just been past as leading scorer for his country.  Man he could he hit a ball..

Keepers don't like it hit early as normally they are not set for a strike and can be on the wrong foot.

Tried to always pass that on to any teams I coached. Put it in the net first and we'ill talk about what you may have done later, If that was good enough for Bobbby and Bob it's good enough for me to coach that way.

predictions for the weekend? southern really need points on the board here an a couple in the net but where will the goals come from?

Batty

Connor - Joy - Prattley - Redwood

Rodeka - Ridden - Ryder - Mclennan

Coldicott - French

Bench: ZG, Hogan, Jude, Ruka, Stewart

Ruka didn't seem very interested against Waitak and I think Ryder will offer some energy in there. Regan and the Scot poster boy up top would compliment each other nicely I feel. Obviously the team missed both Joy and Prattley last week so they're a big gain this week.

Prediction: 2-2. Ridden and Rodeka to have us up 2-0 at halftime, Stevens and McGarry both score on their homecomings for the Nix.

Game today was a very tough watch, average from both sides. I thought Ridden and Ruka were best for Southern although I'm sure 'Coco' will tell us all different.

true, it was a game that made you question whether or not having the ASBP on TV was a good thing!

WaiBOP are an OK side but Southern are woeful, will be lucky to get above 8th place this season

I was absolutely gobsmacked at just how awful Ridden was. Disgraceful first touch, passes regularly found opponents with pinpoint precision, he kept turning and dribbling into trouble, and to top it all off just looked like he'd rather be sitting at home on the couch he was that disinterested.

Tough game away to Wellington this Sunday. Reckon Fridge will ring the changes? Neither French nor Mobberly impressed me at the weekend.

Batty

Howard - Joy - Prattley - Ferguson

Ryder - Ruka - Hogan - McClennan

Stewart - Rodeka

Bench: ZG, Connor, Ridden, 2 of Mobberly/Coldicott/French/McBride

Ridden was probably one of the stand out players on Sunday I would be shocked if he benched him this week, very true about mobberley was shocking and I didn't even realise French was playing. Hopefully we can see rodeka starting soon
