This is good - they should be competitive.
They'll be poor

Apparently these two were dropped for good reason and very lucky not to be cut from squad completely. Coates and Neil

Coates didn't play by choice, and I heard O'Farrel got dropped for a good reason

Reason? Coates seem's like a knob, this confirms it.
Why on earth has Steve Hepburn put Malcolm Fleming of all peoples opinions in the ODT. A shocking one at that. He's had his shot at every club in Dunedin, including OU - move on.

Couldn't they of played at the stadium, the Cale, or even Memorial would of been better?

It's pretty shark when a small but vocal minority including him have a pop at the Irish blokes. The last thing the team needs is people creating unnecessary divisions. Although the Irish lads aren't superstars, it's hard to deny they're probably the best 5-6 guys in the team at the moment. And they seem like top blokes to boot that are genuinely helping lift the standards of the team. It doesn't happen overnight unfortunately.
The other things that irks me is people forgetting that other than the Irish, ALL of our squad are locally based players. In the past we would always get a massive bunch of fly-by-nighters from Canterbury & North Island. And they were almost all bloody average and the first to disappear when the going got tough. We are actually playing at least 5 or 6 genuinely local players every week - is there any other team in the league that can say that? (I think Tasman United have 2).
Everyone knows that PJ Park isn't ideal, but it seems like they're making the best of a bad situation. Where the hell is Malcolm suggesting they play? Tonga fudging Park? "Dodge the dogshark" de Carle? Just goes to show how much we need our Home of Football.

Cale unavailable over summer due to athletics.
Seriously, we desperately need a proper all-year footballing facility!
And Memorial & many other grounds have Cricket.

I think his sentiment has been lost in the angle of the story. Malc is clearly from the viewpoint that the best way to improve the elite level players in the region is by providing them the opportunity at the top level. Especially when, as he says, the season is gone. He is not saying they are bad, but based on the position of the team now, he would rather play all local players for development purposes.
Lets be honest, things seem like they have been run better both on and off the field, but results are the bottom line and they have been poor. Close second in every game is still last.
In regards to the venues, again, I think Malcolm's point is lost - he is simply saying that because there is no sense of community / atmosphere at PJ park, it is almost better for the away teams as we don't gain an advantage from the home venue. In my opinion, we should be playing at Tahuna, were the venue is as shark as possible and we are used to it, while the away teams arent. No one will want to play there and we gain an advantage. And you get a few people in the stand and maybe there is more atmosphere.
Stadium is costly and out for re turfing, the Cale has athletics and Memorial has cricket. As does sunnyvale.
There is a lot of positivity around at the moment, but realism can never be dismissed
As with the other Football article from the ODT re the scholarship scheme, it is a great step forward with very poor execution. It isn't mentioned in the article but part of the agreement of the scholarships is for the winners to be strongly advised as to which club they should play for.
I thought they are supposed to be impartial and objective? How is potentially sending all the top players coming to the region to one club going to help this?
I would think they'd be sent to that one club (whichever it is, I have no idea) because that one club has the best/better facilities, coaching etc compared to others. Gives the players the best opportunity to progress their game under those sorts of conditions.
The university student scholarships are paid for by the University so I imagine they have some expectation that the money they spend goes towards developing their affiliated clubs?
If we bite the bullet and get out to PJ this weekend then there will be a home atmosphere and we can take our first 3 points. Malcolm is just a bitter S.O.B and probably aggravated that he will be coaching Caversham 2s next year and that southern is being better run now. Play 11 home players and we will get dicked. Keep patience and the results will come and we can build over the coming months/years. We need to stop being short sighted.

Yea that would be fine if they were simply University scholarships. But they are Football South scholarships through the polytech and the university. It would be fine if Football South wasn't the main instigator of the scholarship. By no way am I knocking the University providing a scholarship for good players to come down here.
The university club just does not have the changing member base and variable availability during holidays / exams going for them. In order to develop the game in the region, you would think that getting good players down here and staying here would be the point of these scholarships.
The university ones are university of Otago performance scholarships awarded for all manner of sporting and cultural excellence aren't they?
The university ones are university of Otago performance scholarships awarded for all manner of sporting and cultural excellence aren't they?
Yes, they are, but two of these scholarships have been specifically set up for football players, in partnership with Football South. The aforementioned article states that Football South has set them up.
If there was no partnership with Football South, it would be fine. But its not and they are directing players to a specific club.
Any incentive to attract or retain players to the region has to be good and if they play for Varsity so be it, after all it is a partnership with the University. I just hope it is stipulated that they are available for National League football.
Technical Moron more like
Tats a tuff reid. Who the hell is Daniel Morris?
Why can't Peter Johnstone Park become the homeground for Southern United? Yes it's also a rugby ground in the winter but why should that matter. Tahuna Park? Are you serious? I think Southern United are slightly more ambitious than that. SU need to continue making progress and improve just like the other teams in the league. Playing at Tahuna would clearly be a step backwards.
Well done Southern United on your first win of the season.
Great performance, result, weather and atmosphere. Keep it up.
Yeah it was a really good performance, thoroughly deserved the win - to be honest anyone who had watched their last few games knew that they weren't far away from it all clicking.
All the Irish lads were superb - hopefully that shuts up a few of the negative muppets.
Top stuff from those Mosgiel lads making some noise too.
Funny how quiet it gets in here after a good performance & win!
There was also a good little write up in today's ODT (and found link online), with positives/negatives about Southern United.

What's the name of the right back who played against Tasman?
Not sure if this has been posted but you can get the Southern United gear here:

... Waitak have a million "quid" budget?!?
Good read.
They've been ok signings (marginally better than some of the local options, but not by much).
Not sure they've done enough on the field (from the little I've seen this season) to justify their inclusion. If they're not going to be challenging for the playoffs, you'd be better off providing a local pathway.
While it's mitigated slightly by some of the off field roles, personally I'm a bit uncomfortable with some long term staff being moved on in order to accomodate them.
