Southern League 2021

As much as I would like to take that generous offer, the leagues need to finish in my opinion. It's not like Auckland are going to be playing anytime soon anyways, at least we can finish the Southern, and then the Central, while we wait for National League to be ready.

I was supposed to be off to Dunedin this weekend :-(

Still reckon it could be done. With the Northern League and perhaps even the Central League, surely it could just be called as is? Central NL spots and relegation is sorted and Northern looks relatively settled.

That would put Auckland City, United, ESFC, Birks, Miramar, Olympic, Wests, Nix Reserves, and probably Cashmere and Coastal in the national round.

settled? it needs final
Final would be ideal but do we have any idea that will happen? How many European leagues ended things as is in 2019-20?

Well now we know!

"These scenarios dictate what form the upcoming men’s and women’s National League competitions, as well as the yet to be completed Football Foundation Kate Sheppard Cup and Chatham Cup, will take, along with the impact on regional seasons.

New Zealand Football General Manager, Football Daniel Farrow said:

“When planning the season, we always knew there was a possibility of another lockdown so designed a degree of flexibility into the schedule.

“Whilst we are currently in an uncertain situation, it is important we outline to our clubs and members what the potential impact of different time periods at Alert Level 3 or 4 is. By establishing these models, we it can provide some clarity and allow participants to move quickly when we do return to play."

Selwyn vs. Green Island - Foster Park
12:30pm
South City Royals vs. Coastal Spirit - Caledonian

Well there's only the top two that can hit that tally though?

I'd say pretty certain that Cashmere are in, Coastal looking the most likely to clinch the other place and will do so if they get 7+ points from their remaining games, really you'd need them to tail off and one of the sides below to hit very good form for their to be any change.

From that perspective, South City Royals vs Spirit is probably the game of the round for next weekend.

Given that completing a national round is likely to require either/both of double headers and/or midweek games then it would work a lot better if 2 christchurch sides were in the national round.Auckland is obviously not going to be in Level 2 by 20 September which was the trigger date for the national round starting 16 October and finishing 18 December.

Uni tailed right off, can't believe how poor they've been. I mean sure their last three games have been difficult fixtures and most recently they've had guys missing but seriously... 0 scored and 12 let in in three games. It's not pretty. Especially hard to fathom considering they were actually playing some pretty decent stuff at the start of the SL, and now look like a bottom half finish is quite likely...

Anyways, Cashmere are in by a comfortable margin even though not mathematically official yet, which it will be if they so much as draw this weekend against South City Royals... speaking of, pretty decent upset in Dunedin, close game but the Royals more clinical and defended better, anyones game for 2nd place now (at least between Royals, Coastal, CUFC and Selwyn that is). With the fixtures ahead, maybe Coastal are ever so slight favourites for it... tight nonetheless.

Also don't know if anyone from those clubs is on here but I find it strange that the Christchurch United and Selwyn games weekend gone were closed to the public - surely they could have just let a limited number in! Seems an overreaction when we are only in Level 2...

Uni only had two subs in their 5-0 loss?

Wasn't all games supposed to be like that, the South City v Coastal game just happened to move to a venue with more access! Handy for the Coastal fans that made the trip down!

The outdoor limit is 100 people though? Or was there a wider directive from NZF to play without crowds?

Christchurch United's ground, the Christchurch Football Centre is privately owned and has a multiply pitches, so with other games likely to have been played on the Saturday seems sensible to make it a 'closed venue' rather that breaking the 100 mark and felt that the coverage from the 'live stream' was great. Pretty sure Mainland Football have stated that games at English Park will be behind 'closed doors' and were possible providing a 'live stream'.

Updated table (click on table to enlarge), so advantage to United for claiming the final spot for the National League, and most (including me) were not thinking that two rounds ago.

Suburbs been strangely disappointing in this league. Only beaten the bottom team, four losses from six games. It's funny cause they actually have a decent squad with good experience on paper, but hasn't converted to results or good performances much this season. Probably the biggest disappointment of the Southern League, but maybe put Coastal into that equation if they stay as low as they are!
