Yes was a Hurley Shied game (only able to be contested for Canterbury side - maybe time to looked at the rules around this as who can challenge for the Shield and or is the Southern League the right league for the Shield to be contested).

Interesting to look back on the history of the Shield which was introduced at the start of the 2007 season so Saturday's games was the 142 game for the Shield, with 112 successful defences and 29 occasions that the Shield has changed hands.

The last time Coastal won the Shield was back in July 2017 when they defeated Technical 1 - 0, but they lost in the next challenge against Selwyn the following month, with Coastal's only defence this season being against Selwyn - which will be only the second time the two sides have met for the Shield, so will history repeat.

Surely there must be rules in place to determine how many minutes need to be played for a result to stand. Also if a match is abandoned do goal scorers get credited and do cards get wiped off.

Surprising I cannot find any reference in the Men's National League Regulations Season 2023 stating the minimum number of minutes needed before a result stands.

Have cut and pasted this from the regs concerning Suspended or abandoned matches.

Suspended or abandoned matches

24.6 In the event of adverse weather conditions occurring during a match, which in the view of the referee endangers the Players or Team Officials, the Match Officialsmay at their sole discretion suspend play for a period of up to thirty (30) minutes to allow time for conditions to improve to a point that will allow the match to recommence.

24.7 Where weather conditions preceding a match raise doubts as to whether play shall take place, the Match Official and the Host Participant shall meet at the ground to consider whether the ground is fit for play. This meeting and discussion shall be held in sufficient time to enable the Away Team travelling on the day of the match to be notified of any abandonment prior to their departure for the match. If the Match Officials decide that play can take place provided that no further rain falls, then the Match Officials shall further decide whether or not any other scheduled activities prior to the match are to be postponed.

24.8 Before any decision is made as to whether the match should be abandoned, the Host Participant shall discuss the situation with the Competition Manager. The Competition Manager may arrange for an alternate Match Venue to be used for the completion of the match, at their sole discretion.

24.9 If there is doubt as to whether or not a match is to be played because of uncertainty about weather conditions, the Match Officials shall immediately notify the Competition Manager following the field of play inspection and the Host Participant shall advise the Away Team.

24.10 If the Away Team has been notified that a match is to be played provided no further rain falls, then all reasonable efforts shall be made to ensure that the match proceeds, provided that the Match Officials nominated for the match shall have sole discretion as to whether or not it shall be played.

24.11 If for any reason the referee cannot make or does not attend the match venue, and if there is doubt about whether the field of play is fit to play, then the Host Participant in conjunction with the Match Officials shall be responsible for advising the Competition Manager on the condition of the field of play as well as notifying the Away Team.

24.12 If for any reason a match is abandoned, that match shall be replayed at the direction of the Competition Manager, who shall first discuss the matter with the two affected Participants, as per regulation 24.3.

In the absence of a local competition rule, you defer to IFAB laws of the game, which will say 90 minutes or as specified by the competition rules…

It would be interesting to know if the referee or host participant contacted the competition manager before abandoning the game. Said competition manager was probably still at Eden Park.

As the Southern League is New Zealand Football competition, as part of the National League they manage the league and the NZF competition manager was down here visiting clubs at the being of the season.
I was at the game which was being played in very strong cold biting winds with driving rain which only got stronger and colder into the second half so in the end I think real concerns around players (and officials) safety due to hypothermia led to the decision, with safely concerns ultimately up to the officials at the game and I doubt any phone call to anyone would have led to any other 'call'. As per the regs delaying the game for up to thirty minutes to see if conditions were going to improve was not an option as the weather was only getting worst.

Several very experienced players from both teams said after they that they had never encountered such harsh conditions.

As I have stated above any ruling will be made in the next few days, no doubt NZF competitions manager will gather relevant information from match officials and clubs before a any final decision is made. Only two options, a replay or result stands.

ClubOrgane the IFAB rules laws state the following for an abandoned match.

7.5 Abandoned match
An abandoned match is replayed unless the competition rules or organisers determine otherwise.

Update of the postponed game between Nomads and Cashmere Technical:

The National League Competitions Working Group have now met to discuss issues arising from the weekend and one of the items we reviewed was this abandoned game. Regulation 24.12 of the Mens National League regulations states: “If for any reason a match is abandoned, that match shall be replayed at the direction of the Competition Manager, who shall first discuss the matter with the two affected Participants, as per regulation 24.3.” We have also considered the length of time played (60 minutes), the score at the time of the abandonment (1-1) and the potential effect this game could have on the final table in determining qualification to the NL Championship Phase and Relegation.

As such, we have determined that in line with Regulation 24.12 of the Men’s National League Regulations, the match played between Nomads United and Cashmere Technical will be considered a null result and the match will be required to be replayed.

Hey AW82, or anyone else that knows... run me through the promotion situation again.

Bottom team obvs goes down, but the winner of the CPL, likely to be Uni, plays off against the winner of the Malborough one (if they choose to) and the winner of that plays against the winner of the Dunedin comp.

Is that right? Any word on whether these other areas are going to go in?

You got it but I think a slight change this season.
Can be the winner of the respective league or the parent body (Mainland Football or Southern Football) are able to nominate another team, if the first placed team(s) elect not to seek promotion, is a Reserve team and or does not meet the licencing requirements.

So CPL team faces the Nelson Premiership team 'home' and 'away' with that winner then facing the team from Southern Premier League 'home' and 'away' to find the team to be promoted.

At the moment in the Nelson Premiership leading sides after 12 of the 14 games are FC Nelson on 36 and Blenheim Rangers on 33 (no other teams can finish in the top two), I understand both are keen on Southern League Football.  The two sides are set to meet in the final round on 12 August.

In the Southern Premier League after 13 of the 18 games, Mosgiel top the table on 35 with Roslyn Wakari on 31 (no other teams can finish in the top two), again I understand both are keen on Southern League Football.  The two sides are set to meet in a catch-up game on 2 September.
