Shit I'll be dropping $10 on that.
Team Wellington... no longer an association with Ole. Chur
Was $5 for the draw too so got on that as part of a multi with the other favourites.
Talk of only about 150 being at the match is really sad. This is a season opener against a top club. What's going to happen when you play lower profile teams (no disrespect)? The gradual erosion of support for Team Wellington is a real cause for concern. I remember when TW attracted decent crowds to Newtown Park. Now you just seem to be a Miramar Rangers rump and a few TW supporters. I appreciate there are individuals who are working hard to keep TW alive but perhaps the time has come to rethink their involvement in the ASBP. Team Wellington should be one of the banner teams and clearly you no longer are.
Perhaps it's just not viable to have a central Wellington ASBP team trying to compete for attention with the Phoenix? Would it be better for the competition if Nelson were allowed to replace TW, or even would Hutt Valley be a better option? We need to refresh the ASBP and with a (strongly rumoured) South Auckland franchise coming in next season then either Nelson or Hutt Valley could be a better option. Please don't take this as a dig at TW, I'm just trying to be constructive.
Id say that's a typical TW crowd. It doesn't really grow or fall too much based on who they're playing against.
newtown park used to be buzzing. after a while apathy set in, then the phoenix came along and membership clubs lost interest. so good on the miramar folk and others for stepping up and keeping the whole thing going, but i think it is right to ask a few questions about the validity of the franchise.
you really might as well just have miramar in the league. they were good before and they are doing a good job of running team wellington now.
an additional team in the hutt would be good too, the player base is here
It's a mediocre competition with little or no support from the governing body in a sport that has minority interest in this country. It has no promotion, little to no media coverage and is dominated by one (occassionally two) teams from Auckland.
You sell things by people identifying with the individuals, knowing the names of who they are going to watch and even football fans can't do that with ASB Prem sides let alone the general public.
It's hard to sell the unsellable and we know as the Fever have been sponsors, supporters and an additional promotion arm for Team Wellington since we started.

And this is considered a success ?

...with little or no support from the governing body...
It almost feels like NZ football keep it running because they feel they 'should'. I have seen very little to suggest they have any performance indicators other than an O-League win (and the accompanying funds) to measure 'success'.

I have seen photo's and heard of the old National League - was it the Sponsors money from cigarette brands that kept it so popular.
As a youth I did see a few games at the Basin.
That long ago what kept it going was a large expat population and little to no cverage of overseas football. When it was the only football to watch people got out and watched it.
When you can lie on the couch and watch an entire day of European football the motivation to invest time and effort into a league that has no profile is limited to a few die-hards and for all the 'disappointment' at Team Wellington crowds (my count had it at just over 200) it's not like as a percentage of the regional population any other sides do significantly better these days.
I've seen City play in front of less than were there on Sunday.
no australian teams , local TV stations ...all things of the past now ....

not less than 200 , at home , anyway , be happy ...thats more than you had at the end of last season..
It needs to be remembered that when Australian sides first started New Zealand didn't have a national League so blaming the Australian sides for the demise of domestic football doesn't add up.
That had happened before the Kingz appeared, let alone the Phoenix.
crowds in the old league started dwindling in the late 80's, but they were still bigger than now
i wholeheartedly agree with what hard news has said
if the league is going to get anywhere, it needs to be managed and promoted by the franchises
to be honest, the whole notion of a 'franchise' is flawed. the term 'franchise' implies that there might be some revenue. without tv cash, merchandise or gate sales of any significance all we are left with is single team entities that exist for 14 games a year and play in front of no one
I watched City play Otago in front of under 200 at Croatian Sports centre. City only won because Siggy decided he wasn't losing and ran out of the backline with the ball to create the only two chances city had. I counted the crowd. There were less there than at Farrington on Sunday.
by 'you' who do you mean? Me personally? Yes, less. The Nighthawks normally get around 10 along.
At least let the franchises run it ...NZF has no " skin in the game " ( pardon me bit for this saying , it seems reasonably exact ) let the turkeys pick their xmas , after all its their necks ....
PS your logo aircraft is now obsolete ....that was fast

you need a reality check
TW are nothing more than a Phoenix reserve team as far as this city is concerned
the fact that i just laid down $50 on TW to beat the league champions this weekend is a sad indictment of the league that your team dominates
i wish the league was better than that, i have always been a big fan and have watched it ever since i was a kid. so i'm not just being narky here
years of inept NZF administrations have destroyed it and that pisses me off because i'd much rather we had a professional league here than had to enter a team in the a-league

How about creating a more competitive league where there is the actual possibility of teams other than those based in NZ's Casino Capital winning it?
Smithy made some good suggestions in this Herald piece, including an expenditure cap.

So maybe it's the stupid spending in an amateur competition by Auckland city that is lowering interest (outside of kiwitea street), and not the Phoenix.

Very true. I think it runs both ways - which is the worst case scenario.
But yep unfair to pin it all down to ACFC, fair call.

Absolutely .....its other teams having money what makes TWs crowds so pathetic....
Dp agree about a full revamp of the league tho..NZF couldnt organise a pissup near a brewery....
Getting slightly off topic... But when Herdman did his WOF roadshow a few years back, one of the obvious omissions was 'senior football'. Now I agree you have to start with the kids and effect generational change but now that WOF is in place, it is time to start thinking about the state of senior football; if only to complete the WOF vision.
T dub chances? They are paying well at TAB. Waitak missing a few of their best
T Duds more than a good chance !!!!! If they make top 4 definitely looking like O league !!

i got $6, it's $4.40 now
Gees I thought it was high now. Taking the piss at six or above. I heard yest bet365 was still at 6's
Waitak 1-0 up, just before HT
2-0 to Waitak. Looks like the bookies will be pocketing peoples money today.
Flicking over to the asbp website - looks like Henry is quite involved.
Also good having the live updates - did they do this last season?
