Talk of only about 150 being at the match is really sad. This is a season opener against a top club. What's going to happen when you play lower profile teams (no disrespect)? The gradual erosion of support for Team Wellington is a real cause for concern. I remember when TW attracted decent crowds to Newtown Park. Now you just seem to be a Miramar Rangers rump and a few TW supporters. I appreciate there are individuals who are working hard to keep TW alive but perhaps the time has come to rethink their involvement in the ASBP. Team Wellington should be one of the banner teams and clearly you no longer are.
Perhaps it's just not viable to have a central Wellington ASBP team trying to compete for attention with the Phoenix? Would it be better for the competition if Nelson were allowed to replace TW, or even would Hutt Valley be a better option? We need to refresh the ASBP and with a (strongly rumoured) South Auckland franchise coming in next season then either Nelson or Hutt Valley could be a better option. Please don't take this as a dig at TW, I'm just trying to be constructive.
How about creating a more competitive league where there is the actual possibility of teams other than those based in NZ's Casino Capital winning it?
Smithy made some good suggestions in this Herald piece, including an expenditure cap.
