There has been a bit said in other threads about Waitakere and their lack of fans. Most of what has been said is on the mark.
The club has got it right on the field and now it need to do some work off the field promoting itself. There are three big malls/shopping centres in their catchment area (Lynn Mall, West City and Westgate) and I went to the one closest to the club on Saturday (West City). You wouldn't have known the club even existed. I'd've had the players there, some at least (the non-playing members?) in club gear giving out tickets, balls, tshirts, anything club related and not too expensive. Better than kicking balls into the crowd at halftime, as they did. Posters in shop windows advertising the game, especially in local shopping areas and not just the malls, would also have been a good idea.
There is the basis for an excellent club there, I hope they do more to help it grow.

I agree with that. They have got it right on the field and their playing facilities are now excellent. Now they need to build a strong fan base and start to attract people to the games.

Most of the clubs need to employ full-time marketing experts who could easily double the gates and promotional activity. It always comes down to money but I can foresee the big clubs, TW, ACFC, WU and CU starting to move down that track.

I would argue against that in that there are some strong administrators around. They may not be at promonent clubs but there are some good people who are very organised for their club. I would also advocate the leadership of the AFF CEO David Parker as being open, honest, and generally solid and sound.

I always cringe when I hear folk talk about attracting"the soccer public" to games. We do already do that, it's the others we need. Sticking with what they get as you so nicely put it, is a recipe for failure.
Yes, there are a lot of people playing - always have been - but so many of these players aren't really fans of the game as such, they'd rather watch Super 12 or league or Holden vs Ford, or go fishing, or play golf, any one of these pursuits that the average, "don't wanna have to think for myself" dutiful kiwi bloke is told he likes.
These are the sort of people we need to attract to the game as spectators, the "soccer public" that I so often hear mentioned is a merely a few hundred devotees.

They've got to really. A fifth of the next World Club money should be earmarked for a top-notch marketer by Waitak. But will it? Probably not. Traditionally all the money goes in the players pockets, which is all wrong, but that's another battle for another day.

"The next". Not necessarily "this" (he said, covering his ass). I still think they'll get through though.
