Hows the recruiting for my team coming along?

Have they managed to lure the best players in the BOP and Waikato into the squad or is it going to be another season of ACFC/WU rejects?

From last weeks stuff article
Waikato FC current squad for the ASB Premiership, with more players to be named: Mark Jones, Alex Barlow, Alex Carr, David Smith, David Samson, Tewi Te Pou, Alexei Davies-Campbell, Ryan Zoghby, John Fletcher, Dan Peat, Nathan Palmer, Tim Pilkington, Jason McKeown, Jack Beguely, Jason Hicks, Nicholas Branch, Milos Nikolic, Sam Margetts.

There is a nice mix of players in there although looking at the team sheet, there is no obvious captain and they will probably take some lumps as there is no experience in there to settle them when things get tough. Its very young so this will probably be a team thats going to come near the bottom and look to stay together for two years.

The Aucklanders signed aren't retreads and I don't think have ever played at any other Premiership club so when you consider they have no money, probably need an injection of Auckland players to fill in the spaces and they are willing to travel for their club coach, its a nice choice of players considering the retreads available (Prince anyone?)
I would advocate signing someone like a Jeff Campbell/Nick Hyde/Graeme Pearce type player. Bit older, bit smarter and calm. They also lack a bit of bulk and just a mongrel in there to win ball, which is not really Willys style so I'm guessing they are going to try and outpace the other sides and do it with agility and ball movement.

Em.  Jeff Campbell adding a bit of "bulk" and "mongrel" seems a little hard to beleive.

Yeah thats quite true. I did say the team lacked it, not that those players will provide it (smarter, calmer and older), but I think you understand where I am coming from

Good performance and goals today against AllStars

Strom looked good and young Sam Margetts from a few years ago was top quality!

BUT very few WAIKATO players on show...?

We should just put out the Melville team, it'd probably perfom just as well

Um, you have a good dose of the Bays side that obliterated the Northern League. I'd say you have a squad capable of making the top 4.

Yip they should do - a second striker beside Milos and something else in midfield and should be a solid team

Sounds like Mulligan had a great debut.  Always felt a bit sorry for that guy and didn't think he was given a fair run at times when I thought we could have done with him at least on the bench.

Hopefully he does well and picks up an A-League contract with an Aussie club.  Unlikely, though.

I think Mulligan would be a huge benefit of another New Zealand A-League team, he's clearly not good enough to start for the Phoenix, and wouldn't warrant being an import for an Aussie team. I think he'll be too good for the ASB Premiership, which would be a very annoying situation to be in, a star in an amateur league that's not televised. Maybe he should try the second tier of the MLS, surely he's better than someone like Cameron Knowles, and close to Plodder.

Mulligan's a class above this league. Not bad for Waikato, no goals conceded from open play, and some soft decisions went against us leading up to goals. Fletcher looked good in goal, and I though Branch and Begely looked good, also Jones when he came on, one of the few Waikato guys.

Mulligan was simply brilliant on Saturday. Fully ran the game and so he should. Was very one sided, Auckland City dominated possesion and created alot more. Waikato counter attacked a few times as it may have been their tatics and this created two chances for them and and grabbed two goals. Waikato should have targeted Citys centre backs because they were awful.

The only bad thing about the whole game was the state of referees, please tell me we are not going to have another season of unfit and incompetent men in the middle. That referee was an absolute disgrace on the weekend. Overweight and never up with the play even though the game wasnt being played overly quick. He was rude when talking to the players in a bully type manner. Players also seemed confused on many occasions with linesmans decisions, one was a women so i wont be too harsh. Lets hope they improve so we are allowed to see these good players play decent football

Good crowd in on a lovely day...nice set up waikato have there.

I agree about Mulligan.

i think it helped that he was playing in his correct position, bossig the midfield, rather than at right back. I would like to see him taking those free kicks for the All Whites. Indeed, after seeing this, i find it hard to fathom Plodder gets run-on parts for AWs ahead of Mulligan.

Complete reassessment of the lad after seeing his efforts here.

i disagree with the refereeing comments.

I thought most of his decisions were spot on, and his demeanour was not out of place.

I was happier with his efforts than some of the boorish people - clearly not Waikato-based people -- on the sidelines havig a pop at him.

I did however think a few of the lino decisions were wide of the mark (mainly Auckland suffering).

A good entertainign game, Alex Barlow the only "waikato" lad to start, but that's because so many of the better waikato players have opted to do other things.

Actually, you'd have got a good team out of the Old Boys bar on the day, Matt williams, Che Bunce, jeff sole etc.

Most of the new Waikato crew did okay. Mulligan was the difference between the teams.

Bruce the referee was so over weight and unfit he wouldnt be able to keep up with an over35's game. He needed binoculars to see most of the action.

But we will agree to disagree.

And i dont want to start an arguement here but 10 of the starting players were from auckland and 2 of the 3 subs that came on were from auckland. Why dont we just scrap the Waikato franchise and give Auckland another one and actually get the other best players from Auckland. Waikato dont even have the best of the rest.

I do however like the set up at Waikato, good pitch, good seating....good bar.

Yes the referee was overweight, however i dont think this had an adverse affect on his game. I thought he kept up, made mostly correct decisions, and used his cards at the correct time.  However i thought those two freekicks leading to goals looked very soft, especially the second. Would have loved a second look at them.

So I'll also agree to disagree!

Point taken that most of the team is from Auckland and perhaps that isn't a good thing for Waikato football in the immediate short term. But hopefully this team will do well, creating a team for Waikato youth to aspire to play for.

From Saturday i think its clear that they have the potential to win games.

Well if he had kept up then maybe he would have not given those soft freekicks that led to those goals. So you could say his decisions had a very strong affect on the proceedings.

I see your point about having a team to inspire young players in the region, but how many years running have we heard that now? surely we just need to lift the standard of the competition and get another Auckland team in there.

I also heard the coach gave 'the team' player of the day after the game, is this a first for a losing side???!

Waikato do have a good set up. I will be there to watch more games. Yes i do think they could get a couple of results against Manawatu and Otago.

Kerr, not sure of first name.

When he gave a foul he ran from 30 metres away to speak to the player in the rudest manner possible.

Wayne, I think is the refs first name...?

The free kicks were soft but were free kicks. It was more a case of naive defending as opposed to poor refereeing! (And yes I am a Waikato fan!)

Very upset that more Waikato boys not getting the chance to play!

Aaron Scott - playing for Waitakere
Alex Barlow - played for WFC
Mark Jones - late sub for WFC

BUT

Alex Carr - sub GK for WFC
Adam Thomas - on bench for Auckland (I would imagine unlikely to play much)
Sam Margetts - not selected for game day squad for WFC
Tewi Te Pou - not selected for game day squad
David Smith ?
Dave Samson - ?
Steve Holloway ?
Jason Chewins ?
Matt Williams ?
Mathew Gibbons ?

                            Alex Carr

     Scott      Samson    Bunce    Chewins/Gibbons

Te Pou     Smith    Thomas   Williams        Barlow

                           Margetts/ Holloway

Wayne Scott? Well he is a fat numpty so that figures.

I read somewhere on Stuff that Chewins pulled out for the year and that Samson failed a fitness test before kick off. Holloway would be at the beach where he normally is?

Jason Chewins, northern league player of the year, has elected to sit the summer out, but will be back for next winter.

Steve Holloway has gone to Queenstown for the summer.

Matt Williams having the summer off.

Bunce has just become a dad again

Looked like Matt Gibbons playing at left back for the Waikato U20 team last night (they beat Melville U16s 2-0).

I hope Thomas gets a run somewhere. the lad is a serious emerging talent.

The potential availability of a smattering of reasonable waikato players has actually been pretty constant over the years - if there was a magnet to pull them all together.

What has changed since 2004, when Waikato made the playoffs and finished third under declan Edge, has been the collapse of Bay of Plenty as a hinterland for adding a clutch of useful players to a national league squad.

The demise of Tauranga City as a force over the years has had a flow-on effect. we now have whole decent-sized cities such as tauranga and rotorua with no iconic clubs or players.

Chris Kerr was the ref. My feedback from players is they generally enjoy his approach.

You do know that referees at that level have to pass regular fitness tests, don't you? If he hadn't passed the fitness tests, he wouldn't have been there.

Bruce you are talking bollix. He is not well liked.

Jaq if he passed a fitness test then it must be  a laughable requirement. Jamie Cross must have passed the same one. I think we should have international standards not just our own ones. Name me a referee around the world that is the size of ours?

Sam Margetts is a raw talent he should have been playing on the weekend in some capacity. In general Waikato dont have a great talent pool.

However i think they could get one or two results there if they can get some fans out and make it a fortress. Lets be honest theres only one way for Waikato and thats up.

And if there best players are taking summer off then something is not right down there. Sort it out!
