NZF Statement on Paul Cook suspension

February 15, 2010

AUCKLAND New Zealand Football today confirmed assistant referee Paul Cook will be suspended for three rounds of the New Zealand Football Championship (NZFC) following an incident in a match between Canterbury United and YoungHeart Manawatu in Christchurch on February 7.

For his part in an altercation with YoungHeart Manawatu player Cory Chettleburgh, Cook will be stood down until March 15. At the time of the incident Chettleburgh received a red card for violent conduct and has since received a three-match suspension.

Cooks suspension will take in the NZFC match dates on February 21, 28 and March 14.

New Zealand Football takes incidents of this nature seriously, said NZF Operations Manager Glyn Taylor.

We expect all players, coaches, fans and officials to abide by the principles of fair play and respect and by the New Zealand Football code of conduct, and have subsequently acted in regard to both player and match official.

For those who weren't there, the "his part in an altercaltion" was where the linesman pushed the player.  For this he gets a 3 match ban.

What would have been the punishment should it have been the other way around? Didn't Vukovic get banned for 18 months then 9 months?  And that was hardly a push either...

Both push each other and both get 3 matches, considering they should have gotten more. I smell cover up and a lack of facts

Player never pushed the ref.  Yes swore at him in the face, totally deserved send off.  But only 3 weeks for the ref? Surely...

Given all the publicity, I fail to see how he will ever participate in a high level game as an official ever again. First he'll cop it from the fans of one or other team then the players will have a go at him at every opportunity. Time to hang up the whistle I think,

Hardly. This will blow over.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Thats what I'm getting at Vim. Seems to be plenty of voices saying that the lino was pushed so I'm guessing that for the sake of not booting out an official for life because of his actions, they have decided to give each other the bare mininum sentence and identical to each other. 3 games for swearing? Hardly. Even the Moss incident tells us thats OTT. There is more to it.

Either way, its a cover up and as Smithy says, it'll blow over. In 3 months time this will only be talked about when people review this thread.

Well in that case it is a real shame NZF say things like "we take this seriously" and do the exact opposite.

I was there and saw it as well as many others - the lino WAS NOT pushed.  This has been glossed over in favour of the lino.

Much the same as the Terry Phelan incident 2.5 years ago at the same ground.

Just a thought: If  I ran at you in, say, Lambton Quay and abused you, walked away , and then came back for seconds I'd be facing an assault charge. (You don't have to be struck to be assaulted.) Further, I'm pretty sure that if I pushed you away nothing would come of it.

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Oh yes there would. You'd be offered a job as an NZFC referee

Another thing is, NZF received numerous calls/emails regarding this issue from people in the crowd (Canterbury fans backing up the Manawatu player), but they chose to ignore it saying something like, 'We can't base our discipline on hearsay'. Also, the lino was from Christchurch, just saying...

Dont know the details of what they base their discipline process. But if a witness was recounting what they saw, that is not hearsay, that's evidence that can be accepted or rejected.
