There is a "story" going back away to when the Kingz first got up
and running, as to why TVNZ seemingly ignore football these days.
It was "rumoured" that the Kingz board put proposals to both TVNZ
and SKY TV regarding coverage of the Kingz in the old NSL. SKY
offered the Kingz something along the lines of 3 million dollars (I
can't recall the exact fee but we'll go with this just to
illustrate the story) and TVNZ came up with...allegedly ten million
dollars (or, say a lot more than the SKY deal). Ok so ignoring the
specific figures, basically TVNZ's deal was worth more in financial
terms. For some unknown reason the Kingz board turned down
TVNZ and went with SKY, who presumeably was able to offer
specific extras such as Kids Kingz and Soccer Central to supplement
broadcasting rights of Kingz matches. I also believe there was
something written into the deal that would return extra funds to
the Kingz should they attain a specified viewer figure.
This is all hearsay of course and I guess one day when guys
such as Chris Turner or John Batty decide to write a book on this
inaugural period of professional football in NZ, we will get more
of an idea. But it sounds a pretty good reason as to why TVNZ would
get pissed off with soccer.
Basketball did the same thing to TVNZ. I was speaking with a
former Tall Black two weeks ago and we were having a beer and
comparing notes regarding football and basketball and why the TV
coverage was pretty much lame on free-to-air and interestingly it
appears that both codes were either too greedy or they back-stabbed
TVNZ sport. There must be a story there somewhere for someone with
plenty of time to investigate....Ian Wishart anyone?
