TVNZ's football coverage has always been appalling. Always negative, always looking for any opportunity to be sarcastic, cynical or take a snipe a NZ footy. But tonight's TV1 sports news struck a stunning new low.

First, its coverage of the NZFC final consisted of a 2 second clip showing the red card challenge on van Steeden and a comment along the lines of "this terrible challenge overshadowed Auckland's win over Waitakere in the New Zealand 'Cup' Final". No goals, no interviews, nothing else.

Second, it moved onto some negative story about the Phoenix being behind the 8-ball getting its squad together - despite Herbert stating that he was perfectly happy with progress and pointing out the obvious - that, of course, the club is not as advanced as others given it was only formed a month ago and given the other clubs have existing squads, infrastructure etc. And despite focusing the story on the progress of the Phoenix they somehow neglected to mention the only actual development of substance - that the club will have a home game up front against the defending champs (as reported in the Dom Post today). Good news doesnt count.

TV3 had the NZFC last - but at least they showed some goals and interviewed some players.

I call upon the Fever to institute a boycott of TVNZ news as of now.

Yeah I agree - didnt see it as was at training, but I know what your getting at mate.

Need some banners - f**k TVNZ

I already boycott it... it's just a joke.  Like so much Australian coverage they think they appeal to the majority by denigrating the game without realising the genuine interest out there...

And when they do show football once every 4 years at the World Cup they claim they are doing football fans the ultimate favour.  Well put Marius, a disgrace. james dean2007-04-18 09:54:14

I agree. TVNZ are a bunch of feebles when it comes to the biggest sport in the world. Whe was the last time you heard a TVNZ sports reporter pronounce any European Teams or players' names correctly. They only news we ever get from them about the sport is scandal and controversy, remember how much air time they spent on Erriccsons' love life when he was England coach?

TVNZ sort your shat out.

BTW: Anyone who has a blog, or other public outlet please vocalise your displeaseure, as I have done here: http://orientalparade.blogspot.com/

I agree. And their new ad with everyone pointing lights at the sky and looking all drippy while those weedy little w**kers Evermore whine away over the top makes me want to spew.

TVNZ will also be showing hours and hours of that ultimate wankfest the Americas Cup for god knows how long so f**k them.

I heard a presenter refer to Team New Zealand as "us" the other day. How wank is that? Every discerning person knows it is a company versus company sport, not a national one. Team New Zealand don't represnet me just cos my countries name is inside their one.

phil style i think the goverment has put some money towards the challenge for the americas cup (someone correct me if im wrong tho) so they are kinda our team.

but i dont think that its just tvnz "denigrating the game". even at high school we struggled to get new soccer strips, the firsts had the same strip im sure before i started in third form (when we asked for new ones) till we got them in seventh form, we never got funding to go to other schools and play or tournaments either whereas the rugby guys did, and the netballers.

and i always watch tv3, and geoff bryan aint so bad.

This was done not to support the team (supposedly), but in the hope of bringing the cup challenge back to New Zealand, and all the economic benefits that go along with it.  What the government should have done is started their own competition and offered the 34 m dollars (or however much it was) as the prize money. Then see how much interest and money pours back intot he economy as a result.

As it happens, the investment in Team NZ has loked like a supporter's grant/ gift. I object to the government investing my money in a team I do not support.

$34m, jeez, Ak City Council spent $40 to revamp the Viaduct Harbour and look how that took off.
We need events, lots of events, that's what makes this place buzz.  The hotels fill up, people pour into the city, people feel good.

I would only watch the America's Cup if the boats were armed so they could try and sink each other.  I remember cheerleader Keith Quinn rabbiting on last time about how huge the 'Cup' was and that it was even shown in S. Korea....it was on a Chinese cable sports channel with English commentary FFS!!!!!!!!!!!

I watched nearly all of TW's game and didn't even realise the final was on until I read it on here. Pretty poor coverage.

Why even bother having an article about the America's cup when nothing has actually happened yet? Twice in a row!?

But personally I prefer One News over the smarmy t**sers on 3 (at least John Campbell is on opposite TCGW now, so don't have to put up with him. I think he put me off 3 news for life), then watch Sport's Tonight later on. Best (or worst) of both worlds.

Monday night wasn't the best night for a national final. But at least it was live on Sky.

They could also get out really deep and keel-haul the TVNZ News Editorial team? You can bet if there was a new oval-ball team going they'd get good coverage.

Perhaps someone should tip-off TV3 or some other (radio??) broadcasters to how angry the football community is about the treatment we're getting from TVNZ. Surely they'd love to run with the story! phil_style2007-04-19 12:54:16

That is why I have Sky TV , so I can see some real sport , bl**dy TVNZ only got on the band wagon during the "82 world cup. They seem only to find negative things when it comes to football here , but when the All Blacks stuff up they are very quiet about them.

Miles is the best of them all on the radio sport. Tvnz are disgraceful tbh they should show highlights on some of the regular season games during the sports news but I think they would hardly be concerned about a few soccer fans boycotting their news. Radio sport are pretty fair on all sports just most people cear about rugby.

Very good letter! It was written respectfully, so they will listen to it and it was worded very well. Can someone let us know if they reply to the letter?

Both stations were appalling again with their coverage of the OCL final. Absolute disgrace, they may as well not have f*cking bothered.

No point complaining, but I was spitting afterwards.
