Go on then, someone confirm what day the youth match is on this weekend.

The TW programme that announced the youth fixtures and squad, confusingly stated Sat 10 or Sun 9 - forget which way round but neither can be correct for 2008.

NZFC says:

9 Feb

Team Wellington

HBU

Newtown Park no.2

13:00

But, Pandemic says:
Team Wellington vs Otago United - Sunday 10th February - 15:00 (get along at 12:00 to catch the Youth side in action as well !!)

So what is correct?

Is it Sat at 1pm or Sun at 12pm?

Bugger... knew I should have checked that.

Suspect it's Saturday on Newtown 2, but I'll check.

Yeah, I was there too. The second half, still at 1-0, saw TW looking strong. Then HBU hit them on the counter to make it 2-0 and that was that. Well, not quite. TW had a man dismissed for a second yellow, gave up a soft third and a tidy finish from HBU secured a 4th.

More worrying was the prima donna-like behaviour from the youngster brought-off for the final TW substitution. The guy coming on went to shake hands and the lad coming off refused, said something unsavoury and then sat and sulked on the edge of the technical area. Not being happy at coming off, okay, but having a pop at the guy coming on? Doesn't augur well for the team dynamic.

agreed, that's hardly going to help the lad that's coming on to focus on his job

Wonder where he learned that. Sounds like the sort of behaviour we'd expect from a professional marquee player with international experience, not a youth player

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Gotta wonder how a team loses 4-0 to a team they beat 5-1 2 weeks prior.

I watched the match today in absolute misbelief with what was going on. The Youth team was clueless in the attacking third and basically played without a striker. Are there any players out there who are taught their roles properly and asked to be imaginative in the attacking third???
I was absolutely stunned not to see Sam Blackburn playing and the mix and match tactics involved.
Maybe its the rotation policy or players being rested??? Who knows???

Yeah true prima donna aye...yeah whatever...Ahmed...Admir...similar names!!!

So what is up with that - HB give TW a hiding after TW did the same in round 1.

Last week we were applauding the central "D" but what happend this week?

and why was Blackburn not playing, injured or resting up as a sub for tomorrow or maybe other arrangements?

and what about the attacking 1/3 like you mentioned Yugo, I am sure there is enough talent in the youngsters at LHutt, Olympic, Miramar and Wests, surely??? Actually, talking about strikers, has anyone seen Kyechi (scuse the spelling)?

In reference to the mix and match, if you go on what Alan Jones said on world of football, perhaps coaches are only interested in results at the very elite level e.g. Nix, All Whites and possibly NZFC??? so maybe youth coaches are about mix and match for now .....BUT I would be sure if you ask any of the TW players out there on the pitch - they want to WIN! so how does a coach find a balance with developing and winning???

And as for the prima donna, could it also be mistaken for "passion"???? i.e. someone who wants to really really really win .....but then theres also attitude so lets hope it was the former.chareimos2008-02-09 21:24:22

Pretty sure he headed for Japan for a while in November or so.  Smith and I gave him a lift home from the Fever Lounge a day or two before he left.

You mean the latter?

Passion is only useful if it is helping. Sometimes it gets in the way and prevents players and coaches from making intelligent decisions. I hate it when people want to sacrifice intelligence for passion.

It didn't come across as passion though. And the guy going on was visibly annoyed at having his extended hand batted away and followed by "words".

Blackburn was brought on in the second half. He scared the opposing defenders and drew a couple of yellow cards. I guess that he was being rested or rotated. I have no problem with that. This is the youth team - it's nice to win, but that is not what it is really about.

it's also interesting to speculate whether, in situations like that one,  the passion is for the team and the win, or more about the player's own ego

agree, SiNZ that passion without intelligence is a liability - for just one example ask Gascoingne's Spurs teammates from that '91 cup final

Its past my bedtime sorry SiNZ.

good to hear that the general mood is positive in the squad Yb08, perhaps the lad had an off day and a word from the coach(es) might sort it for the future

Tell me what footballer does not have an ego LOL....lets hope the lad understands the difference!!!!!

In terms of coaches, the best ones I have seen are composed ...and defintely about the bigger picture.. i.e. yes its one game but the season is not a sprint race but a marathon and its whoever can handle the pressure best of all during the season and hopefuly developing with each game I think.

yeah true charemos
I like people who teach me the correct way of playing.
Coaches that are qualified and have a good reputation.

it's a struggle for me to remember it

in a nutshell gascoine injured himself early on making a mad tackle (he was way too hyped) - he missed the next season  edit - so hard for me to remember that i forgot that spurs won and his team mates would have benefited from him staying on the park

amazing player, generated a fair few laughs  -but he'd be hell to live with

his book about his personal struggles with alcohol and binge eating and obsessive compulsive disorder was interesting - and a bit sad really

Somebody told me D Ahkoi didnt like the setup.
Permalink Permalink

So D Ahkoi playing for anyone else or concentrating on Central League? D Ahkoi is another lad with potential! And Fraser Colson would have been a certaintly too but hes so talented hes also been selected for NZ U19 Cricket team...

Getting back to Hawkes Bay, there academy setup must be working..... to getted whipped by TW in round 1 and to bounce back with a win is a great effort...

OE.  Back soon for start of first semester I think.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Well that hardly says a lot for TW Youth then????

So in keepin postive what if any were the postives Feverish?

Positives for TW youth were speed and first touch- they played more as individuals than HBU youth, who played a fluid team game- as for the big kids

well done TW, you put away Otago- but really, 1-0 should've been much more
Otago were a VERY poor side, toothless up front and slow at the back.

i didnt see any goals when i was there - which was for about 45min i thought- though apparently it was 4-0 to HB so they must have knocked in some late ones.
TW players looked decent - but played the sideways pass possession game that you quite often get with Wellie youth teams.

YoungBlood - The TW number 9 or was it 10, blonde lad if that helps, got a second yellow and was the one sent off as a result. I only know some of the players by name and he's not one of them - and there's no match programme or player listing*. He came over to the technical area, said sorry to the coach and jogged round to the changing rooms. I didn't quite see what he did to get the second yellow. It was around the edge of the HBU area. He fired in a shot, which was blocked by the defender. There was a suspicion of hand-ball, but I don't think it was. I turned to watch the flight of the ball, so missed the short tussle that lead to the yellow.

As for positives - until the second goal, TW looked much stronger in the second half. After the goal and the red card, they faded. For a while TW played with 9 men due to injury after using all subs. The lad went back on, which I thought was pointlessly risky given the score and only 5 minutes or so to go when he was obviously struggling. In the last minute of stoppage time, he had to limp back off again after a tackle put him out again.

*Talking of which - I emailed the TW website contact suggesting that they give the youth team a page. Currently, there is not even an acknowledgement on the TW website that a youth team even exists. I'd like to see fixtures listed, with results, and also a squad list. Not too much to ask, I would have thought.

Totally agree with you there SiNZ - why is that? No mention of the youth at all!

It also allows people to see when youth players have been promoted to a senior game, as in some other NZFC sites...

As a side point it looks like Sam Blackburn was not even on the bench for the 1st team today, so unless he was injured why did he not start the youth game???
