Waibop could be a bit more of a force this season.

There is a hint of X factor in the squad, they had a 2-1 win over Hawke's Bay in Napier last weekend, and have been strengthened by the 3 Napier lads shipping in, which helps offset the loss of Chad Coombes and Aaron Scott to Waitakere.

Marc Evans is a real goal poacher, Freddy Marquez can be mercurial, Mark Jones had another terrific winter (with Wanderers).

I suppose Wellington will start favourites - but is there a teeny weeny hint of them being but a shadow of last summer? Would any Wellington followers care to confirm the rumour that Chris Bale will play up front?

The pitch is in great nick, though rain is forecast.

Waibop women are playing NZ Development as a 1.30pm curtainraiser - which makes for tricky logistics in the Gower dressing rooms at about 3.30pm - but if the weather stays away it will be a great occasion at a relatively tightly enclosed pitch where the fans are up close.

Is it just me or someone is going to get absolutely tunnelled in a tackle at some point. It has some feeling in it.

I reckon there was a reasonable shout for a pen against Musa on Evans if that was not good enough, then Marquez just got hammered and absolutely shoulda had one.

Good game to watch - much better than Akv HBU which was like watching paint dry.   At least we had two teams today quite happy to go forward and have a go.

I see that Gower Park, like Porrit are benefiting from the recent FIFA tournament.   Pity about the rain.

A word about the referee - have never seen him before and was quite impressed.   His positioning was good and he was on the spot to make the decisions.   I feel for him though - he was obviously letting the game flow and wasn't interested in the minor bits.   If he was being assessed by John "the players ref" Cameron, he would have scored quite well.   If being assessed by Ken "the whistler" Wallace, his marks may have suffered.   I remember an aussie commentator a few years ago commenting - " good to see a good physical game - no one died".

I am having a meeting with Bill Robertson tomorrow.   I may mention that when he cons the referee in to a frre kick, it is not good form to get up with a smile on your face!

If missing 2 pens is impressive, you will love watching the A League refs...

I thought Waibop were worth at least a point today. Waibop had two good penalty shouts turned down and the last goal from Team Wellington came from foul on Waibop centre back Luque

A lot of off the ball stuff was let go by the ref . All in all a good game played on a good surface . It's better watching national league games at these venues instead of massive stadiums with a croud of about 100

im just surprised Cory kept his red card in his pocket - out of character..

but he wasn't that bad - infact the funniest moment of the game was when Team Wellington scored their second equaliser when there was claims for a foul on halfway on the WaiBop centre back - in the aftermath you could hear the serial complainer Ryan Tinsley saying to the 4th official how the referee had ruined the first game on TV, he is such a moaning pratt.

Wellington showed a lot of character to twice come from behind to win on the road, so they deserve credit - even if Chris Bale wasn't totally convinced of his future as a striker.

But I don't think I am talking out of turn to report the Waibop camp felt they had quite a bit go against them. I overheard one angry Waibop player tell a Waikato refereeing legend afterward that the ref might as well have picked up the ball and chucked it into the net, which was a nice piece of grumpy hyperbole if nothing else. (I have no personal view, didn't see enough of the key moments because I was doing other stuff.)

Despite the appalling weather the feedback on the pitch and venue was very positive, with a lot of the visitors having never previously heard of Gower Park (some of the Sky crew even went to Galloway park by mistake).

The women's national league curtainraiser finished 8-3 to NZ Development. It's not a venue for home wins, it seems.

An exceptionally late finish to a long day when one Waibop player - no names, but it was Max Manko if you are reading this Grant - struggled for 90-odd minutes to piss for the drug test. (If you are battling the logistical struggles of hosting a female curtainraiser to a male national league match with live TV dictates at a club venue where facilities are stretched and the weather is dodgy, you can pretty much guarantee that will be the day they choose to complicate things by insisting on drug testing with their own exclusive room etc.)

Canterbury United's televised games (first one this Sunday 4.35 pm vs. Team Wellington) will be at ASB Football Park (aka English Park) which is just the right capacity - the stand holds a couple of hundred and the grassy banks either side are good for tanning while watching a game (I sometimes lie down on the grass while watching a game).

The noisy section of supporters prefer the far side where the coaching dugouts are - and the scaffolding tower for TV cameras - so will be interesting to see if any of their noise is audible on TV.

Last season, after some spectators got into an "argument" with coach Sean Devine and he looked like he was going to jump the barrier and take them on, they roped off the spectator area around the coaching dugouts for a few games.

That would have made good TV....

enjoyed the highlights from our boys (WaiBop).  Pity about the Ref but Waikato sides have always had the rub from them.... Brian Pecious anyone?

Having not seen Gower Park in over 10 years, the ground looks very nice now.  I wonder what Muir Park might be like today had we not sold it off to the Mormon Church.

honestly and for those that know me I am not a big supporter of some referees (Cory being one of them) but I didn't think he was too bad - obviously their were three major talking points (the two pen shouts and the claim for a foul on halfway when TW scored one of their goals).

For the two pens I didn't think they were deadest - I have seen things like them being given but I can live with them not being given as well.  If they were outside the box they would not have been stonewall fouls so I don't personally think WaiBop were robbed on those two - the foul on the CB, well the camera was zoomed out and we didn't get a close up look so it was hard to judge foul or not, again it wasn't a deadset foul, three controversial calls maybe as they directly effected the outcome of the game but three howlers?  maybe not.

Umm, not sure about how his overall performance would have been graded by JC, but the failure to award a free kick for the foul on Luque when he was crunched in midfield before TW went downfield and scored the winner certainly did not meet with his approval (and was expressed quite emphatically and colourfully, I might add)!
