i must admit that my worst fears came to fruition yesterday. Midfield with no direction being totally outplayed in fact did sinkora play? Defenders seemingly rotating along the backline and then played totally out of position and a forward line which wouldnt scare a northern league 2 side let alone a good wellington side.

any thoughts from others there?

Fat controller did you use to work on the set of Thomas the Tank Engine?

I wouldnt worry too much fat man - Wilknaldo will be back in the Waikato midfield for this weekends encounter, and as per usual he will run the show

Yeah but they are playing Canterbury. If he can't put up a reasonable showing against them (which I doubt he can) then he may as well stay on the sidelines

what sort of comment is that????

Canterbury havent even won a game. Alongside that they have played two of the teams that Waikato have and ended up with a worse result.

What I mean by that is I don't think that the wilkinator is that good. They are playing Canterbury who haven't got a good record at the mo (and I'm surprised at that) and have had worse results as you have said.

If he can't perform against opposition that is favourable on the table to Waikato and also perform in the void that (has been stated here by a couple of others) is the Waikato midfield of the past couple of games, then he should not worry about lacing up the boots next week.

Does that make it a bit clearer for you sir?

Yeah except of WOF it def was not a penalty except for some inept refereeing

You got lucky, watch the tape.

Agent what game were you watching? Canterbury were lucky not to have another penalty decision go against them wehn Luke Findlay was brought down in the box in the first half! Did you go to the game Agent 47? because from what you are saying it sounds like you didnt... dont bother making things up about a game that you didnt attend!

I was at the game and at the time I thought at the time that the Findlay incident was a penalty.   However, I have now watched a tape of the game (courtesy CTV) and it shows that Findlay wasn't touched by the Canterbury defender - I have slowed it down and watched frame by frame and ....nothing.   Good call by the Referee who was in perfect position.
The penalty to Waikato was deserved - I couldn't see it from the grandstand - player had his back to us - but based on what was shown on the tape (on the camera side of the field and facing the incident) it was correctly awarded by the lino.
Overall though, not the best game to watch - too many mistakes by both sides

Oh sorry master. How dare I make any comment... FFS

You seem to get uppity at anyone that has an opinion different from yours or even speaks in a thread you are posting in. You have some absurd views of your own as well looking back over your own posts..

It wasn't a penalty, you got lucky. Watch the tape over and over again... Just tell your team to stop chanting benchmark everytime they kick the ball.

I heard Luke Finley called the wrong thing and said "Running In" and "Turning Left" instead of "Turning Right" Thats why he had to dive.

Luke Findley obviously got a good bollocking at half time today v Auckland. In the first half he was slow, never getting back to defend until it was too late, but came out after the break chasing everything down. He got subbed half way thru the second spell, but had put in a better effort. If he (and the rest of the Waikato team) played like that for a whole game (with some enthusiasm, not necessarily running around like headless chooks) we might have got a better result. Good game to watch, showing some of Wakato's potential. The Auckland penalty was a bit soft, ball just bouncing off a hand in the box, but that's the way it goes. Good effort guys. Good game to watch and actually a bit of atmosphere at the stadium, possibly due to the Auckland fans that travelled down for the game.

Or were they on their way home from Wellington?

yes we only had to wait till the 50th minute rather than the usual 80th+ before they started playing football, does that mean next sunday they will start playing in the1st half.
surly rodger will put a stop to that

Roger Wilkinson is not capable.

Surely you all know the story of the emperor who wore no clothes.

Hello there. In defence of Roger, what have Jonathan Gould, Danny Halligan, Chris Milicich, Colin Tuua, Terry Phelan, Shane Rufer and anyone else around now won as coaches.

Roger was named NZ coach of the year in 1993, took Waikato United to runners up in the former national league twice in 92 and (Superclub national round) 95 before heading off overseas. in earlier day he took Napier into the national league and then put Waikato back on the map in the mid-late 80s.

I don't agree with some of what Roger does, but he's worthy of grudging respect. He has twice built regional powerhouses out of basically nothing. He is a driven man.

Roger does polarise people. But then so does Alex Ferguson.

More interesting on the Waikato front is reaction to a Waikato Times story from Matt Richens on players boozing on the eve of Sunday's match. The Waikato Times editor has posted a reply on the Melville forum to a post from a well known football identity criticising the Richens report . I believe that's a first. Good stuff.

How the hell you compare Woger Rilkinson to Alex blows me away surely you now more about the game than that........Brusey.

Just a thought on 92 and 93 successes. Didn't he have some good players then at the peak of there careers or was it Woger????

What don't you agree with what woger does Bruce would be interested.....

On the players boozing. How poor and disrespective....poor posts on the Melville web-site by GGW also. As a spectator i pay $10.00 to watch them play with the thought of them getting themselves ready tp play to their best, and to entertain...... not out on a mates 21st....if i would have known that before the game i would not have paid.

I will not be paying my money any more to WFC when i hear players are out the night before the game.... and the coach/emporer thinks thats ok......shame on the LA Galaxy players also thats why they are their and not a top club and bottom of the MLS...

Do they hold trials for water boys? Surely it can't be as a player because he isn't that good.
He isn't strong on the ball, no top gear, lacks a credible first touch and thats without mentioning that he is not a presence in the air

What a troll

Hope Luke is not paying for his flights to Aus will be the biggest waste of money for him.

If he does make it as an import player he will stack up well against the like of Juninho, Mario Jardel and Daniel.  Good Luck Kid

Michael Maynes biggest issue i feel is that he tended to drift out of games and make mental errors.

Good footballer, just needs to focus better.

""In defence of Roger, what have Jonathan Gould, Danny Halligan, Chris Milicich, Colin Tuua, Terry Phelan, Shane Rufer and anyone else around now won as coaches.""

Chris Milicich has coached two different sides to Grand Finals in the National League and been NZ Coach of the year. Colin Tuua has coached teams for many years with the same sort of talent as Roger and continually got them into playoff contention. Danny Halligan took a very average Canterbury team to the NZFC Grand Final and should have won. Shane Rufer should have won the NZFC minor premiership last year but because of Auckland City fielding an ineligible player Waitakere won and Shane had some pretty average players. Gould and Phelam are probably the two coaches that Roger could be compared to currently.

You should never compare coaches as it always comes down to players, support staff, club backrooms and ability. Many coaches live on past history to continue to get jobs.

Are you seriously suggesting that if Tuua or Milicich was available that you would pick Roger to coach your team in front of them?

Yes, I would probably go for Roger ahead of the two you suggested. he offers more breadth of significance in terms of experience and technical knowledge, even if he is more difficult to work with.

I could add, if you want to go into the what ifs, I believe the old Waikato United would have won the old national leaguye under Roger in 1992 instead of finishing second behind Miramar had he not been off on duty with the new Zealand Under 20s in Tahiti at a vital stage of the season.

Waikato were only once out of the top five (and that was a league up to 14 teams) under Roger. They were fourth in 1990 third in 1991, second in 1992. Under the superclub format they were finalists in 95 (when he returned from o/seas).

Roger has also been coach of the year, (1993), won a host of nothern leaguye and central league championships. he has usually had to operate on a budget significantly inferior to that ofhis rivals, and roll his sleeves up and with squads not comprised of the best players in the league.

In two cities he built teams/clubs from scratch in Napier City Rovers and Waikato United. Yes, he has some very irritating flaws, but a technical coaching ability in not one of them.

Bruce,  I'm begining to think you would rate Roger as the best coach in the country,  I think your getting carried away and saying things in the heat of the moment.  He may have been the best coach in the country once in the early ninteys but we all know times have changed.  No recent acheivments.  In the 1994 english season only one one manager that one manager of the month is still involved in the game and thats Fergie ( please don't make the comparison) I think the game has changed in NZ or I've even heard people say Roger has changed but the results show hes not the great coach he once was.  Maybe football in Waikato needs to stop living in the past and look at recent results.

I have not rated Roger as the best coach in the country. I didn't think he was the best in the country in the early 90s as it happened 9though our coaching stocks were stronger then). I can't understand why you are presuming to know my thoughts. i have only addressed  Roger's coaching here. Please don't try and put words in my mouth. I'm capable of doing that myself.

I can't see that i've generated any heat either. I've pretty much stuck to parroting a few facts and given a personal memoir on 1992.

Apart from last season, Roger hadn't coached in NZ at top level since 1995. That's the most fundamental reason why there are no recent achievements. You have to be coaching to achieve.

If you only judge a coach on results, well, they're great one year, duffer the next. that's absurd.

You don't say how the game has changed, how times have changed (have they really changed that much? or do we still face exactly the same challenges?)  or substantiate your view that waikato is living in the past. if you look at results this season waikato has won one match, drawn one and lost to the three top teams by a solitary goal. That's despite a host of setbacks with unavailability and injury.

that's a pretty thin base to be making some herioic assumptions about the state and culture of waikato football in my book, let alone that 'results show he's not the great coach he once was".. There's a long way to go this season. You could end up looking pretty silly with some of those statements yet.

I heard that Finley learnt how to dive from Boomer Kotchin after a kick around in the back yard. Obviously it wasnt good enough to decieve the referee. Should have known better then to learn from a nobody in football like Boomer "jay jay A" Kotchin.
