Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

Well, what a game at the Mount today!! I, like most people was surprised by how it panned out, but from a moderately neutral point of view, a number of things were interesting;

Two straight red cards, both deserved, showed a lack of self discipline in the Waikato squad, as did two of their subs relieving themselves against trees in full view of the grandstand, admittedly in the distance.

Waikato struggled to use the wind, lobbing the ball forward too far on numerous occasions in the first half. When they did get their length right, the Tall Otago CB coped well.

Otago on the other hand, tended to switch play a lot more, and stretched the 'home' team defence. This led to the first goal. The second goal was courtesy of the Waikato defence letting the ball bounce in the penalty area and then a gutsy header scored.

Best players... Otago left back Jesse Malloy - rarely made an werror and the weight and timing of his passes was exellent, centre back Kevin Taylor, and gutsy striker John Lang.

Waikato... hmmm Aaron Scott did well, set up a great chance with a nice pull back.

Nice to see a game played in the Bay. Well done Otago!

you sound surprised thats the Wilkenson method mindless long balls
as for the youth team coach, change a winning team so you look like a plonka works well going down 7-1 to a hopless waitakere side oh the joys of rotation

wasn't there though running around at masters games pretending to be a young fella and feeling the pain now

HN, Firstly a new signing in the midfield, who wasn't listed in the programme (prob either Matt Friel or Dale Beattie) got sent for either standing on or kicking the Otago right back when he was on the ground. The ref consulted the lino, but it looked fairly blatant even to me on the far side of the field. The second was centre back Jeff Sole who hauled an Otago striker down from behind, even more blatantly. Pointless too, as his team were already 2 - 0 and a man down.
Oh dear!

Thank you Otago and thank you TAB for those over genourous odds -$7.50.    Having seen both teams in action against HBU, it was clear Otago were the better side and only needed an ounce of luck. That win won't be there last, Accy Stan2008-02-18 06:22:55

Waikato new signings: matt friel is the tall Yank. Dale beattie is the fat Scotsman.

fat one got sent. he started well, but ran out of puff.

Dogs of war stuff from Otago. Not the long ball that is killing Waikato, but the 100 short square passes they play first which allows the opposition defence to get back in position.

Otago are always gona be tough to beat at this time in the season. Waikato on the other hand seem like a team that is always missing that killer punch. It has been very difficult for them infront of goal this year - minus the penalties they have struggled to out many chances away. The only one who seems to be able to score in open play is Holloway - it seems if you shut him down then the goals dry up for WFC!

Dale Beattie got sent for kicking the other guy in the head and Jeff Sole for pulling back a lone striker who had beaten him. Was kinda surprised Davie Samson wasn't sent just on the half (2nd yellow) but he got subbed immediately so I suppose the desired result was achieved.

Matt Friel was pretty good but he must be thinking 'what have I gotten myself in for'

did anyone watch the yth league game? i saw it last week against auck city, seemed the 2nd half they were playing well and on top, what was the difference this week as waitak didnt seem to have the greatest of sides?!

the 1st half vs auckland they had guys from first team squad that wern't up to it, they then subbed on daniel finlay who cut up aucklands midfield the week before hence they made a bit of a come back.
they played there best line up last sunday and beat the nz u16s 2-1
this weekend they tried the hugely sucsessful rotation policy( graham henry would be proud)put there best centre back in midfield and didnt bring there better players on till the last 30mins

That Daniel Finlay, he's quality.

As for seniors, Jeff Sole effectively said " WTF I was going to quit in a few weeks anyway, might as well go now" after his red and subsequent suspension. Full story in Waikato Times http://www.stuff.co.nz/waikatotimes/4405874a6414.html

from memory one of the first team squad players came off because he was crap, but the other one stayed on and played midfield, scored too i think.Chris Woods was unavailable so didnt play, but 2nd halfs midfield look more solid with the first team member, finlay, mark christenson i think it was?

Rumor has it Steven Holloway was that disapointed in the way Waikato have been playing he is considering quiting the club and planning on a summer transfer move down south. Holloway who has always wanted to live in Dunedin will make his move just before the transfer window closes on the 22nd of Feb. It would be a good pick up for Otago heading into the last 7 games of the season, and could also result in them catching a struggling Waikato outfit come the end of the season.

sounds like a good move to me with the change in transfers ruling, Waikato FC dont develop they just bring in old poms!. Shame since the youth squad does have talent waiting for the experience,we can't win the league so start developing for next year

The best development for youth team players is to make a good solid impression in the northern league over winter, effectively stating their case for consideration at national league level next summer

A few of the Waikato lads look to have possibilities. They now need to prove themselves in the northern league week in, week out, like their predecessors.

Feedback: Steven is off shortly, not to Otago, but to Fiji and PNG as part of his work.

the 3 youth team players were playing in the northern league week in week out and havent had a chance yet. Chris Woods played for Hamilton and scored a fair few goals, Tom Edwards played for Glenfield all year and Scott Cambell played for North Shore. These 3 players havent been given a chance and there are young youth league players that seem to be stepping up and maybe need that chance.

tom edwards played for the youth squad at gower park vs auckland, he wasn't up to that level
Sammy Margotts got game time for the 1st team at the last home game at the stadium, and he ain't even at a northern league club although is certainly worthy of more game time.
although it could just be that sammys off to wanderers

Bruce,
are you sure that Steven isnt heading down to Otago? Because I talked to one of his friends yesterday and he told me that he had just got of the phone with him, and Steven told him that he was sick of it at Waikato and  wanted a change - Otago being his prefered option. Have a chat to your son and see if he does feel this way. Maybe he doesnt want to tell you coz he doesnt want to upset you?

hello there. It would not upset me. Steve can do what he likes. But the fact is he has a job, and with his job, he has commitments. Those involve going to Fiji and PNG, rather than Otago. That is the reality, regardless of where you spoke to a friend of a friend of someone's sister's neighbour.

But enough of the nonsense.

To get back to the other issue here, Tom Edwards and scott campbell, at varying times, have been given a run in the NZFC, or in Waikato friendlies. Hand on heart I can't say either are even close to the standard required, in my opinion. They need to put much more time in at northern league level. it won't have done thme any harm to be involved with the waikato squad, however.

Chris Wood has had injury problems. i briefly saw him fail to score from the penalty spot v waitakere, but otherwise have not seen him in action over summer. However his efforts last winter with Wanderers were exceptional -- though he is very young still. He may yet get his chance this summer.

I think Sam Margetts is a very good young player - though the fact he got a run the other week was as much a reflection of how thin the waikato squad had got pre-transfer window. May only other observation of sam, was watching him at waikato stadium, he was absolutely knackered about 30s after coming on... I guess it was just the occasion thing, but I'm sure he enjoyed it.

There may be some real openings at Wanderers this winter for a new batch of youngsters to prove their mettle. I sincerely hope they take the opportunity, though it is an interesting aside that a top young player can arrive with an NZFC club being his first. Maybe clubs aren't as important as we think?

I will also be watching the lad reece edmonds from tauranga in the winter. Raw, but quick.

what practise games have the academy players played in?? i havent heard of any games being talked about or advertised, and you could barely say theyve had a chance, any of them, sam margotts only got a token 3 minutes, you cant expect him to get into the game then, at least 10 he might get a touch of the ball.

A number of academy players turned out for the Waikato Fc team beaten 1-0 by NZ Fiji in Mangere. I was most impressed by Alex barlow, who replaced scott campbell in left midfield in the second half. (Tom Edwards played at right back) Campbell and Edwards played in pre-season matches.

I'm not aware of any young waikato players who have been hard done by in terms of having deserved more of a chance than they have got. Indeed, i think some of them have been exceoptonally lucky to have had as many breaks as they've got.

i couldn't agree more with the first part, though would love to know who you think were lucky to get their breaks and what they were?

I thought my original posting was clear enough, above. Scott Campbell and Tom Edwards, their middle names must be Lucky. They are in an NZFC squad, have both made debuts this season, but are quite some distance off the standard required.

For that matter, Margetts has great potential... but as far as I can see even he has been fortunate to rise so high up the pecking order so quickly. He is a player for the future, but this is someone who has never even stepped out at northern league level.

There is a case to give Wood a crack - but he has been injured most of the summer.

the youth players (or the best ones) are lucky in that they get to train with Waikato FC. That has got to be good for their development, and it is from that that the coaches will get an idea of who measures up.

Waikato FC

In: Dale Beattie (Glenafton Athletic, Scotland), Che Bunce* (Navua, Fiji), Matt Friel (Monmouth University, USA), Michael Gwyther (North Shore United), Nick Robson (Auckland City academy)

Out: Tim Kautai (released), Jakub Sinkora (Auckland City), Dale Williams (returned to Wales), Matt Williams (family Commitments)
are our youth players that bad we got to get auckland ones in to play 1st team, or is it that other coaches know how to develop players. Maybe the waikato youth players should trail at the likes of waitakere and auckland to further their chances, seems like a bit of a joke!

Bruce, I would be interested in hearing what your best WFC starting eleven would be, and possibly reasons for picking them, feel free to nominate players who are unavailable. As you are an avid follower I would be interested to hear your views. Is it true Che Bunce is back?

joke is right the Waikato FC management should run the NZRL board, or Nick Robson is the signing of the season and possibly playing at Wanderers this winter
