i must add, that the problems at waitak show the franchise national league in a poor light vs the club option
i'm thinking that the best resourced clubs end up near the top in a promotion/relegation national league - i.e. the clubs with a combination of finances, good admin, good structures, good playing numbers, good coaching, good facilities. the biggest factor often being $$$.
the franchises are just there, for better or for worse, regardless of how well they are run or resourced compared to the nations stronger clubs
youngheart, otago and waikato wouldn't have survived in a promotion/relegation club league. they would have been usurped by a bigger stronger, better resourced and better financed club and the standard of the league would be the better for it
i related this to waitak because it appears that players won't play unless they are well paid. if this happened in a club league, the standard wouldn't suffer because those players would resurface elsewhere in the league ,waitak would inevitably be relegated, and the league would evolve
(for better or for worse)
franchise leagues need to be constantly moving forward to be sustainable. the lack of sponsorship or tv money has meant that the awesomeness of the nzfc in it's early days has now been eroded away to the point where we are left with one outstanding team, 2 contenders who could nick a win off them and a bunch of development sides making up the numbers.

my whole post was just a theory
personally, i'm not sure how i feel about it. i think i prefer franchises actually.
one thing you can't deny is that waikato, otago and youngheart frequently performed poorly. my point was that you cannot get away with this in a promotion / relegation structure. so you've actually backed up my point by saying that they may have got their act together had relagation rules been in place. by not having relegation, they have meandered along.
agree, it was a ninja move by nzf. very unfair on youngheart
I have nothing more than a score sorry.
That is embarrassing for them. If Rex was still involved, this would not be happening. Give us a wave Bill McGowan and his coaching muppets. Anyone still wanna argue that coaching school girls is a perfectly good lead in for coaching an ASBP side?
Think you are being a bit unkind to Bill. He has been an excellent coach in the past and was with Waitakere more than 20 years ago and they were very successful then.
I know Bill is not coaching. John Adshead took us to Spain cause he had Fallon coaching the team. Don't believe me, ask Sam or Turner. As for the Knights, he recruited piss poor players. I had a look at the players he signed before the season and it was obvious that they were not up to the standard of the Australian sides, and I predicted before the first game that they would not be competitive.
I'm not getting into an argument about what Adshead has or has not done. The point is, I'm debating what they do now, not in the past or their glory years and Bill is the same. He gets judged on what he is doing now and from the outside looking in, driving the franchise into the ground. It may be the right move for say in 5 years time, but come out and say that.
Has Smalley arrived yet?
He is not coming unless you know something we don't...
has anyone got any names yet? i.e. who has been involved in playing pre season?
Wayne Smith, Terry Smith, Chad Smith, Billy Smith, Jake Smith, Eric Smith, Trev Smith, Willy Smith, Carlos Smith, Reg Smith....
... sorry, forgot Bruce Smith - but he's decided to stay with AFC Fury.
He is not coming unless you know something we don't...
No I just read something on here that he was coming and was a little surprised as I thought he had been at Portsmouth and the English FA as well as somewhere in Australia too? Plus the fact I thought he was disliked by most during his time in NZF?
But losing to Club sides, scratch sides and the u17's does not bode well for the coming season...?
Pressure will be on ...
Sorry to see Ian Hogg moving to Fred Taylor, he's better than that. Wish he was still at ACFC.
Strange site. Seems not all quite there - bit like Waitak.
huge amount of errors all through it...
I'm a Waitak fan living in Brisbane and I must say the clubs marketing is pretty bad compared to a club like City. Waitak's website looks cheap and nothing is kept up to date which doesn't help anyone.

ha ha
yeah, it's half built, but hopefully the site will become useful for NZ news aggregation
if anyone would like their blog fed to the site, email me at [email protected]. all you need is a valid rss feed and i'll set things up to post links to your blog posts automatically as they are published
waitak have signed a richard cardoza. could this be richie cardozo?
they've also picked up jarrod young from waikato, james debenham, harshae raniga and a bunch of other guys i've never heard of:
http://www.sportingpulse.com/club_info.cgi?c=1-4499-124595-0-0&a=CLEAR
coombes, robinson, butler, myers, shelley, cuneedn, solomons, morgan, prattley, stansfield also there
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Cardozo Perhaps this one?
Its going to be a hard season I think for the team considering the players they have lost. Krishna will not be easy to replace and I don't know who they have brought in to try and replace him.
Jarrod Young, interesting. Still 19 I believe, very good player for Wanderers but not in the WaiBOP team - not sure whether they didn't want him, or whether he had already signed. Definitely wouldn't have made last year's Waitak squad so that says a lot about their new finances.
I don't understand how Waitak's money situation is less than some other teams considering how successful they have been (excluding the FIFA CWC). I would have thought a number of good players would want to stay or go to Waitak unless they can't play the wages that are being demanded.

Squad so far going into Charity Cup match against Auckland City.
I thought Jack Hobson Mcveigh had signed for Hawkes Bay united? must of fallen through I presume
HBU have mulligan, morris, robson and biss, so i doubt they needed him
i'd say waitak would be more attractive for him too

Wouldn't have picked Chad to be the shy one. Maybe he bad-mouthed the photographer.
I don't know what to expect from this squad and don't think they'll trouble City too much this weekend. I have seen highlights of Lowden play here in Brisbane as his club is 20mins away from me.
The first goal in this video is his from last season, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcuTo-xGMhs. Should be a handy player.
