I was there

Weenix largely ineffective and had little ball. Sitting here the day afterwards I can't recall a really decent opportunity.

Harris had a few good runs but largely quiet all day with no service to work off.

Stensness started? He is now off back home for high school exams.

Suburbs took the lead early, doubled it soon after. Phoenix created little. Harris was clearly the best player in their XI. A hobbled Andre de Jong (who scored), Eli Just, Dom Wooldridge (who scored), 16yo Campbell Strong, Tim Payne good for Suburbs. You wouldn't have been able to tell who the three pros were. Heavy rain for the last half hour.

Kumsuz (subbed off) and Elliot not so effective on the day then. Noticed that Way got another yellow, and gave away a penalty last week too?

He got lots of cards in the NPL (as a winger). Rudan will be wanting to see more discipline, especially from a back.

I thought the pitch was ordinary and levelled things out.

Suburbs have put a five minute highlight video up on their Facebook page.

Kopy was ok.   He is not terrible, but he is not standing out and dominating the game either.

Sure doesn't sound like a gun UEFA Champions League player to me. Could get interesting if he lines up opposite Tim Payne. And Howieson. #pointtoprove

just a joke really having a national league with a crap reserve team in it .

With kids who are bang average probably wouldn’t even get in a northern premier league team

It's also quite annoying watching a team play in our national league wearing a training kit

is there any point at all to the weenix. Surely if they folded the best players would play for other national league clubs? Why doesn’t the whole league just feed the Phoenix? If your 17-20 starting for the better national league teams your a good prospect who might be ready for a Phoenix squad spot as a young promising player. Each year the Phoenix could pick the best young players for the ISPS to trial with them. It really would make the league more competitive. Take Luke Tounge for instance I believe he has the most caps for the weenix? He’s a promising young player he works hard to get into the Canterbury united match day squad. Surely that’s better for these lads and prepares them for Professional football over being in a youth team environment that gets less and less competitive each year? End of The day any teenager  who nails a starting spot at TW or Auckland City would be more than worth a Phoenix contract and I bet they would aspire to make that next step to pro football. Weenix isn’t needed.

I'd argue Calvin Harris would start for all National League teams. He'd be much more lethal with some decent service.

Welcome reminder that the WeeNix are basically a youth team. And in youth teams there are things more important than the result.

Also, if anyone thinks they have a better shot at professional football playing for a different team, nothing is stopping them.

What are the cahnces Calvin Harris makes Rudan sign him. The kid looks a step ahead so far in the NZFC.

The NIX juniors are better of playing in the NZFC than the outh - the standard is higher. Yes they will get beaten regularly, but (to use an OLE reference) its not about the scoreline for them.

In the last two years Singh and Carcace have made the step up to the A League. I doubt this would have occured if they we playing in the Youth League.

Doubtful as he is classifed as an import and he has also enroled at uni in the USA so will be off in January

Way played like someone who wanted to make the first team, and IMO played better than Elliot and Fox on the day.

Good discipline too, no fouls I can recall until late in the game, where he gave away a free kick plus yellow card with a lunging late challenge on the edge of the box. That led to a goal.

I wonder how Fox is taking his current low ranking, below Lowry. Discouraged, indignant, or determined to play his way back in? Is he 'training the house down', like Nichols apparently is?

As usual, the weaker players prevented any kind of success for the Weenix, but three or four more Handa level players and I think they will be competitive.

This teams pretty good in areas especially Harris, that guy will hopefully go on to great things.

For a reserve team they have alot of games broadcasted on TV in comparison to other reserve teams around the globe.

That might be the case with the youths but surely you should expect to be seeing some results at this level.

I would hope Fox appreciates that there's quite a lot of the season to go with two aging centre-backs, suspensions, etc and that he'll get his opportunity sooner or later.

A list of those who have played more than 900 minutes (equivalent of 10 full games) for WeeNix during their 4 and a bit seasons (69 games and counting - so McGarry played thee equivalent of 45.6 of them).

Players in bold are still at the Phoenix, whether in the first team or the academy.

Do you have the dates they were at the club as well? i.e. so can figure out games per season

Not many coming through to establish themselves in the senior squad although a number have gone on to careers beyond the phoenix (which is good to see).

I can do minutes per season, which I think neatly shows the loss of 'experience' the team has suffered heading into this season. Right click and open in a new tab to see the whole thing.

On top of that, James McGarry has stepped into a first team in the Dutch Eredivisie at Willem II immediately on signing and Ollie Whyte has been signed in recent months by top Portuguese side Rio Ave:

They have lost the last two games by a goal - so they are competing.

Going by results Wanderers shouldn't be there based on last years performances. Or Southern on the last few years.

It is though. If they're playing games each week then they're competing with all the other teams. Sure they're normally towards to bottom of the table but we completely reject that as justification for removing a football team from a league when its our senior side...

Are you talking about the league not lying at the end of the season but they get to stay because they are WP ?

I was replying to the comment they were competitive because they've only lost their last two games by one goal.

Their current record of 5 losses from 5 games with 6 goals scored and 17 against suggests they are far from competitive in this league.

It's all very well saying "its about player development" but this is supposed to be the premier competition in NZ football.
