Well i think some good points are on here but to be honest the first thing i thought this morning when i saw the article was the Nix surprising Barca in the final and being club world champs Whether it is good for the Nz game overall remains to be seen... chocnut2007-12-10 23:02:52

The best way to get some money out of Japan, improve the team and keep everybody happy would be....to sign a Japanese player (or two).

Kazu is too old now...but there must be a few willing to make the trip over here..

easy solution, have WPFC play this years NZFC champs, if the phoenix dominate send them through, if its too close leave it as is

...but even then, by the time you have an NZFC champ the Phoenix are two months beyond the end of the season and out of training.  Then the other end the NZFC squads aren't even assembled by the time the Phoenix start playing.

this happens in champions league qualifiers as it is with different euro nations leauges finishing at different times, its just something you plan for and should happen anyway O leauge spot or not
play at NZFC home ground extra gate for them an spread the great thing that is the Phoenix to the rest of the masses that cant make it to the ring of fire (you would find most of the kids coming to that game there to see the Phoenix)
A short drive over the bombays to watch the nix thrash Auckland A or B ill be there

What happens if the Nix finish last this year and last next year in the A-League. do they really deserve to play in the O-League and have the chance to play in Japan. This is a distinct possibility and what if crowds then fall away to 2-3,000. Does a team like that deserve to go to Japan. Just a thought.

What if - what the dont go outside what if a meteor hits you on the head
The fact is the Nix got a steady 8000+ crowd an they are playing good quality football, thats the only thing you can work on as with life live in the NOW

By the way, the IDEAL solution would be for Australia to return to Oceania...but that won't happen for another couple of years

The ideal solution would be to merge the Asian and Oceania confederations so we could be involved in some decent competitions.

But such a move is not financially viable for the small Pacific nations.
Hell, Seatts has indicated that it wouldn't be even financially viable for NZ either at this stage.

In theory, yes....but wouldn't it bankrupt some of the Pacific Islands if they were drawn away to (for example) Iraq?

Not that the draw couldn't be fixed, of course.

True...but a one off to show the gap between leagues shouldnt be too hard to organise

The talk is in the future to separate Asia into two zones, an Asian Pacific zone with Japan, China, Korea, Australia and Oceania and a Middle-East South Asia, zone from Saudi through the stans and to India.
The Pacific Island sides wouldn't get to play in that on their own but would pre-qualify, with perhaps the top one or two Oceania teams joining the competition proper. It would mean NZ getting some good competition for a change, and I think we are just about ready to see the likes of Japan and Korea come out here and support those games - not like the 4000 who turned up to watch the same Korean team that went through to the quraterfinals of the 2002 World Cup.

Correct me if I am wrong, but don't the rest of Oceania play a tournament to determine who goes on to play us in the Qualifiers?

We are only playing three other teams to determine who is going to get the opportunity to play off for World Cup qualification.  It shouldn't be too much of a problem to continue with the Oceania tournament to decide who gets spots in Asian qualifying groups.

The added bonus is that we could play in the Asian Cup, which would be a massive boost for our national team.

It may end up costing a bit for our junior teams to go to Asia however.

Pretty sure some of those costs (maybe a majority) are worn by FIFA or the confederation.  Friendlies and such become the responsibility of the national body but sanctioned qualifiers are at least partly covered.

But I thought Seatts said earlier that one of the problems for NZ joining Asia is the costs involved. So if it's difficult for us, surely it would be even harder for the Pacific islands?

More than Ben Buckley, Matt Carroll and John O'Neill and none of them seem to have hurt the sport in Australia.
