Mixed feelings on this. Waitak represent everything that is wrong with Kiwi football, yet they have to perform for the O League to get invited back. So while my heart wants them to get sent packing 10-0, my head wants them to at least put up a decent show.
Realistically, their midfield is too ordinary to create anything, their back four too slow to deal with the Iranians, and their strikers aren't good enough to score at this level.

That of course is we assume Waitakere are that stupid that they won't change the way they play. We want them to win because then all our clubs can get all sorts of benefits - not least being a permanent place at the FIFA World Club Cup.

Waitakere are quite capable of changing for a one off game and maybe winning. I dont like them much either but I do want them to win for all of us not just themselves.

I'm trying to watch it but it's boring the sh*t out of me.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

What an embarrassment.
NZ Football and the O League have to agree to let the Nix into the mix so at least we won't get another performance like that. If we get another chance. At least Auckland City competed and played with some sirit.
Perry, Sykes, Eadie, Pearce, Cunneen all look like Sunday League players, and the others are not much better. If Hay was any slower he'd have pigeons sitting on him. Is Bale playing? The only time I heard his name was in the introductions. Emblen is the only one who is trying.
Those Waitak t**sers have shat in the nest for Kiwi football now, and I'd be surprised if Blatter doesn't rule that the tournament is for professional clubs only from now on.

He sometimes got it right(ish) which makes you wonder what his research was, maybe just read the ESPN article 'cos he came out with the same "builders, teachers etc" comment.

Well, why don't NZF ask Central Coast to represent them next time? They're also an A-league team and would have an even better chance of winning a game or two.

Sarcasm aside, you can't change nationalities whenever it suits you and Phoenix, bless them, by choosing to play in Australia surely have to forfeit the right to be called an Oceania team?

Am I wrong?

Okay, I've just watched that and it was (if anything) marginally better then I remember any of the Auckland displays being.  I don't have much time for either club, but how many goals did Auckland score at the WCC ?

I thought they were clearly a tier below the Iranians, and we didnt have the technique or movement to hold onto the ball for more than a pass or two - so, predictably it was lump, hope for an Emblem flick to Totori. But, having said that if you took out the two Minties moments (which were just plain embarrassing), the Iranians actually didnt create all that much and Waitak looked reasonably organised in defense. Did Eaddy really make any saves? Of course, they might have stepped it up if they'd needed to. Real shame about the first five minutes and Eaddy's howler - bc we never really got to see whether Waitak could have made it difficult for the Iranians.

How's a Wellington team changing nationalities Goose.
Swansea City is still a Welsh team even though it competes in England.
Toronto are still a Canadian team even though they compete in the US.
QED Wellington is still a New Zealand team even though it competes in Australia.
If it was regarded as an Australian team it would be eligible to play in the Asian Champions League, which it is not.
I wrote that about a minute before Waitak scored their goal. They looked better in the last 20 minutes, which to some degree makes it worse. The Iranians looked decidedly dodgy under pressure and they could have given them a chance if they hadn't bottled it early.
It will all be academic soon given the comments of the commentators and the tone of the articles. People are now really questioning Oceania's involvement in this tournament, and if you think they won't stop direct entry, just look at the World Cup.

Apparently Sepahan were missing a number of key players through illness, and a few of their guys who played did so with a high fever.
So Waitak really had optimum conditions for an upset and fell woefully short. Disappointing, but completely expected.

Unfortunately they also undid much of the good work New Zealand football has done in the past few weeks, with the Galaxy promotion etc.
All the egg chasers and their kin will now get stuck in, and the credibility gap once again yawns open.

I think you are a bit confused here....

Phoenix are a New Zealand team that chooses to take part in the A-league. The A-league is part of the Asian Federation and not part of Oceania. The Phoenix can't represent Oceania because they don't belong to it. They are, as far as FIFA is concerned, an Asian team.  Swansea might be a 'Welsh' team, but they can't represent Wales in Europe, they have to get there by winning an English trophy because they have chosen to play all their games in England.  It is a bit confusing though...because are there any other teams in the world like the Phoenix who play in a different 'continent' to the one in which they are based?

If the Phoenix win the A-league then they would enter the AFC champions league...and if they won that then they would be in Tokyo taking part in the World Club Championships.

We might all die of old age before I'm proved right on this, to be honest.

They'd have to disband the competition if that happened after the sponsors demanded their money back!

The Phoenix are not eligible for a place in the Asian Champions League, just as the Knights weren't.  It's part of the participation agreement with the FFA.

Oh well, another door closes...

If the Phoenix were to win the A-league (no sniggering at the back) would the second place team qualify?
