onegunman - there was a great youtube clip on a roundup I saw recently of a fresh faced 18 yo keegan in training with Sc**thorpe and being interviewed.  Search for it on youtube for some sign of football in a different era

JD, you've basically outlined what you deem as criteria to be a 'big fan'. Firstly you implied that you had to have seen a live match before you could make the claim, then you used an example involving a group of away fans - so now you've suggested that you must travel to every one of your team's games to be a 'big fan'. I guess that means that the english teams have less than 10,000 'big fans' most of the time since that's about how many away seats you'll get in a game at an absolute maximum. And going by the away support at the RoF i guess the other 9 A League clubs have pretty much no 'big fans'.

My point here is that you can only play the hand you're dealt. If you are born and raised near your team's home ground, and you can afford it, and you don't care about your family, then yes, you can go to every game, and call yourself a 'big fan'.

If you're born and raised in NZ, yet love your english side, the best you can do is watch every game possible, follow your team as closely as possible, and save your pennies to get there for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I believe this still qualifies you to be a 'big fan', whatever that really is.

I know i have criticised the "plastics" before, but at least you have to give them credit for taking an interest at all.

My argument was it is crazy to try to quantify anyones level of support for a football team.

Think about how much you support the nix, then give yourself  a score out of ten.
Does that score apply to only you or is it in comparison with all the other nix fans in NZ and the rest of the world?
How do you justify that score?
What justifies a ten?

The whole thing is arbitrary.
It makes about as much sense as arguing with someone in a pub about who loves their wife & kids more!!

You just cant measure intangibles like passion and fandom.

Uber, you've not been to highbury eh? for an Arsenal fan, it was one of the 7 wonders of the world. Not sure what they turned that ground into now. Still, one day, you want to go to the Emerates.

You choose your team and you stick with it. They might be successful now such as United, but should they get relegated, then you stick with them.

Not all Lower League fans are ex pat. I'm NZ born and bred. I have suffered for far too long but I wont change. I will follow them till the  end of the world - 2012!

I think the argument is, those fans that skip/hop onto the next successful club  the day their "favourite" team loses. I know a guy that supported Southampton, then it was Wolves, now it's Liverpool, who next??

I am sure there are fans whom have the top 6 teams jersey's in their closet for the appropriate result.

Some tops are quite nice, so i can understand some fans wearing other teams jerseys in the summer. It doesn't mean you suprt that team though. Leeds used to have some cools strips, the best being 1975/76/77

As for the cheap dig at Chelsea supporters all very tiresome and insulting to those fans who have been their through thick and thin and watched relegations, near bankruptcy, ground closures, flogging of best players to pay debt, battles against property developers-councils-dodgy chairmen to save the Bridge, vilefied by media as worst behaved fans in the world etc etc.

When Chelsea were in the second division in the 80's, they were getting crowds of 10,000.  There are some die-hard, through thick and thin supporters, just not very many and that is why opposition fans can chant "where were you when you were sh*t"  when they started getting big crowds after they came up and started signing foreign players like Zola, Gullit, Le Beouf, etc.  Mickey Mouse club that has the worst set of plastic fans in the country.
In the early 80's English football and particularly Chelsea had a massive Hooligan problem, this caused fans to staying away in huge numbers and once the Hooligans where brought under control at the Bridge the fans came back.
As for West Ham i think your strong contenders for Mickey Mouse Club and hopefully relegation

The Shed! For so many years at Chelski you had that big ugly stand and then the shed and those other two stands. Now look at your ground, anyone would be proud to own that. Yes, even i admit that Chelski got to terms for the most part with their idiots. We've got some of our own.. but where did they all go? Brentford or Fulham??

I have to admit I've been watching Stoke games - I know it is a sin but Port Vale haven't been on the tele for a while. When I get to that great stadium in the sky and Port Vale are Premiership winners - I'll seek forgiveness.

Yes - the Almighty Bill Nicholson and his Assistant Almighty Keith Burkinshaw are merciful and generous and will forgive you your trespasses (as we forgive those that trespass against us....except perhaps the gooner scum).

And of course if that doesn't happen then the supreme Almighty Sir Bobby will absolve you of all sinful thoughts about Stoke (just say three Hail Shearers and an Ave King Kev).

You know, i miss the old Big League Soccer from LWT. You not only had a division 1 game but you also got to see teams from the lower divisions on a regular basis which I am sure would be really neat to see yet again. I remember seeing Hartlepool, Mansfield, Walsall etc. I really enjoyed it.

I was in Aussie last week and they have (on SBS) the same Premier League Highlights programme for the Championship and the Bundesliga, and had Cardiff v Blackpool on live (on Fox Sports I think) one morning.

Surely getting highlights from the Championship for example (the hour long package) wouldn't be too costly for SKY?

Tbf it was Bolton. I don't think any amount of money would make it easier to watch them.

Three for me, and two for them.
