Just use apple tv to stream with airplay, don't need to rely on an app

I don't think that's right montombo.

PLP uses Flash so you will need the iPhone/iPad app to see it on your device before you can then use AirPlay via AppleTV to get it on your telly.

That link shows your how to airplay your mac to your apple tv so is right, if you have a mac that is capable.

edit: but you are right that the iphone/ipad doesn't have flash so the only way to watch on them will be through the app.

That would be cool if I had a Macintosh Desktop, but I don't.  When they advertised this they were talking about Apple TV and iPad. Losing a lot of confidence with this service. Any word on when the app will be available and also if the service will be discounted if I jump in in say 2 months when the app is ready. I only pose these questions here because the 2 emails I have sent to PLP haven't been responded to.

I think they underestimated just how long apple takes to approve an app. I know a few other businesses etc who have been caught out by this slow process.

It's certainly not good if it isn't released in time for the first game though, will make for some annoyed customers.

Does anyone realistically think that Coliseum will survive? Sky has already started to undercut their business by arranging deals with the top clubs and it just seems like the first step in their quest of retaining a monopolistic dictatorship of televised sport in New Zealand. What happens if we buy premier league pass and then the company folds? It's possible that this could occur..

I also think its seriously possible that Coliseum anticipated SKY making such a move.

Love to know the financial gain they got (if any) from Sky doing what they've done.

Also hasn't been discussed much but ManU games will be lower quality than PLP now?

It is always possible that they will fold, but they will try to recoup their losses and off load the contract to sky, who as I said before will make a footy channel and charge us all 20 bucks more a month to watch it

I helped a mate sign up today. He's a Telecom customer so was usng their 15% discount offer.

I was interested to note that as the biggest ISP in NZ only 3270 people had signed up through this Telecom offer.

Makes you wonder how far short of the number of subscribers they need to break even Coliseum are.

Just watched the preview show on the 50 inch TV - looked great, this is a huge improvement on Sky can watch any game and have multiple platforms.

Haven't read the 54 pages of this - but can you get it on iPad and if so how do you get around the flash problem?

Their iOS app is with apple awaiting approval. Once released you will be able to AirPlay to an Apple TV if you have one

They've developed an app which has been with apple for approval for at least a week or so that I know of.
Also just watched the preview, good quality and made me excited for the season to start tomorrow night!
Wondering how quality will be with the live games, that'll be the big test.

PLP's big selling points now are really just:

- you can watch all the games live (nobody else can offer this, except for dodgy streams)

- you can watch replays of most of the games whenever you like (although anyone with MySky or a T-Box will  be able to do this for a lot of games now)

Is that enough?

More than enough - although I'm still going to watch BBC Match of the Day as well.

Yep I have a Apple TV - but I over-heard today there is also a way to stream it now without waiting for the app but haven't found a way yet.

I have a PC connected directly to a TV anyway so that will be main way to watch it beside a laptop.

You could get the skyfire browser app that which can view flash. I think it's $6.49. It's not 100% certain that it works on every site but someone on twitter said they were using it for plp.

Unless you're concerned about the quality on iPad, in which case fair enough to hold off!

The issue for Coliseum is that people's tolerance for fuck ups is going to be very low.  I understand why people are supportive of breaking up the Sky monopoly but you can't replace what was generally a very good service with something that's worse without causing a lot of uproar - especially when the product is something people care a lot about.  This whole offering doesn't come across as being "fully formed" yet - that's enough to put off a lot of people

From what I gather from comments posted on this forum in the past is that Sky's service was actually pretty poor and the number of games shown limited.  The one thing it might have had was a good quality picture.

I think there is an understanding that quality may be sacrificed for the ability to watch whatever game(s) you like, but the issue of being able to access/replay the game in a limited time frame and how cutting out of the internet might prevent you from watching a game to the end is of more concern.

This whole offering doesn't come across as being "fully formed" yet - that's enough to put off a lot of people - I agree with your take on this.

I think you're being harsh on what sky offered.  Yes, you couldn't watch every game live but you'd always get the big games, derbies, top of the table matches etc and a decent proportion of matches were live (which I think is the key for most fans, you want to watch SOME football every weekend - unless they've dropped the amount of games they show since I was last there in 2008 I never felt like there wasn't enough football on).  There has been a dissatisfaction with Sky's football coverage in general but I've never felt there was a huge problem with their premier league offering (unless you were a fan of a smaller club who wasn't on TV a lot).

Great to be able to pick matches with this new service and it will be great for some people but for a lot of football fans they won't have the time or the inclination to watch more matches than they did previously.  But all of this is based on it actually working!  People are being asked to shell out a not insignificant amount in advance for 12 months of football - not $10 for the next month, see if you like it, cancel if you don't.  They've got your money from day 1 and you're taking a leap of faith in their unproven technology.  And it's not HD!  That is absolutely the standard that people expect for their sports broadcast and it seems to me a major misstep not offering it.

But the biggest issue that I have with this is troubleshooting.  People on this forum, by definition, are probably in the top 10-20% of computer literacy, all this stuff comes as second nature.  That's not the same for the majority of users of this service.  There are significantly more things that can go wrong here and generally they can be quite tricky to fix if you're not up with the play, I can think of:

- home wifi issues, router problems, drop outs

- ISP service issues including speeds etc

- PLP service issues

and I'm sure there are others.  My experience with wifi is that it works absolutely fine the majority of the time but when it stuffs up it's absolutely unpredictable and extremely difficult to fix unless you are extremely computer literate.  Most of the time the only solution is to unplug and let it reload again.  These are all resolvable of course but it just is more of a hassle especially at 3am.  Now we've all had the old Sky "rain fade" from time to time but these issues are another order of magnitude - I've had far far more drop out with my wifi than I've ever had with delivery via set top box.  Of course these are not issues with PLP itself but they will be lumped in with it as problems with the service.  If I was in NZ I'd get it because I still like watching games live and I think the club TV efforts will look quite amateurish vs regular presentation, but I certainly don't see the move to PLP as a trade up for your average viewer considering it costs more.

Have signed up to the basic pass. Lucky enough to get TAB discount. Just wondering, signed up few hours ago and got initial email saying a welcome pack would be sent through shortly. As I am a reasonably impatient sort of person and really technology should be able to do simple sort of things pretty much straight away, any feedback on how long any others have had to wait as it still hasn't come through.

All good points JD and I don't think I'm disagreeing with most of them.

My debate is somewhat academic since:

  • I don't have sky (too expensive) so just observe the regular angst that gets posted on YF season after season
  • I don't think that the total cost for a season is much but ironically I can't afford it over the next couple of months
  • My primary concern was around finding time to watch additional matches since I don't have sky so haven't watched much UK football for decades.  That concern was greatly reduced from Tegal's enquiries but has now risen again from the subsequent comments from Coliseum.
Overall I still would be keen to get a season pass but your observation of it not being "fully formed" is spot on.
I really hope it does well and with enough warning for next season I could stump up the cash.
