You clearly missed the last post I made where I criticised them then?

You are always a hater.

Whereas I enjoy they service, but also point out things I don't like or that they do wrong.

Yet I'm the biased one eyed one? Good one buddy.

You don't see me saying that you clearly work for sky.

it'd make sense that I have more positive comments if I enjoyed the service.

I honestly can't recall one positive comment you've made about the service.

Besides that, you accused me of ALWAYS being a cheerleader (and always imply that I work for them) which is clearly untrue as I feel I'm quite balanced.

It's also a bit rich of you to say I'm one eyed when you're the one who seems to be by only ever being negative.

And yes , I got the edgey reference.

To be fair I was very much against the EPL being on the net and not Sky but the last month have been a real dream for me with minimal hassel and video quality of more than acceptable standards. I take back my earlier in the thread criticisms.

You're nothing but a cheerleader LG! ;)

Can understand that. I was ok with it from the start because I've watched other sports in the same way before and loved it, so figured if they did EPL right then it'd be brilliant.

But can completely understand people being unsure, skeptical or disappointed to begin with if they have always just watched sport on sky. That's the nature of anything new.

That's where I thought they went wrong last year, they needed to offer more week trials so people could get used to the service before committing. Its marketing 101. Lightbox have done it with their free month trial before they start charging.

They seem to be doing more trials this year. Can only think they were unsure how it'd perform to begin with last year, so were a bit uneasy about offering trials (first impressions count for a new product). But this year they know it works well, so can really push for subscribers more than last year and can comfortably offer free trials.

Not really Football related, but I understand it is Coliseum who have got the rights to the PGA Tour golf ahead of SKY.  Interesting move.

Do you have a source for that info? Haven't seen it mentioned anywhere who got it although Coliseum would be the obvious one. If it is them, I wonder if they will offer some sort of discount if you have PLP, or an all in one annual package.

Any idea how the monthly renewal works? Do they send a reminder email or you just have to scramble for your credit card when the game starts and you can't access?

Sports don't need sky to show their product anymore (or as much as they used to). The NBL in nz also streams online.

Cuts out the middle man which is good for sports other than rugby trying to get exposure locally. Obviously sports big enough to command a fee from broadcasters will potentially still choose a middle man, but streaming online and taking all the money from subscriptions is still a potential option, and will that option become more and more attractive in the future?

Sky's responses to complaints on Facebook are pretty pathetic. Mostly the same copy and past job about there still being "plenty of LIVE and EXCLUSIVE golf on Sky." And as for questions about the price dropping in line with the reduction in content, even with the loss of golf their "costs increased by $0.23 a month."

Awaiting whatever gets announced with great interest. With golf there at least shouldn't be the same problems some people get with motion judder for the much faster moving cameras with football. Bandwidth could be an issue for people though given how many hours and days golf tournaments go on for.

With this type of delivery becoming the future, it could get very expensive if there are several sports you want to be able to watch. Could easily be more expensive than Sky for say 3 sports, and then of course upgrading internet plans for more bandwidth too. Plus of course people with Kids who may still need to keep Disney and cartoon channels, or Soho and movies to keep the partner happy etc.

May not be many people who save money on what they previously paid for Sky.

I think sky will have to adapt or die at some point though. Their model is getting quite outdated. When they finally do so it'll mean cost savings - their reply to lightbox will be the first sign of this as they're likely to offer soho content at $15 per month that can be cancelled at any time (assuming they want to use a similar model as lightbox and netflix), whereas at the moment it is behind an initial paywall of $50 or so a month, with a joining fee then an additional $10 per month for the channel, plus an extra $15 a month if you want to watch on demand (mysky).

As for kids, lightbox and netflix have a lot of kids content at $15 per month, I reckon that's already better value than sky. It shouldn't be a sticking point I wouldn't have thought (though understand that it is for some, with lightbox only being new, some are unaware).

Think the broadband thing is becoming less of an issue year by year- we recently changed to an unlimited broadband plan that was the same price as our old capped plan, its fast too.

Sky sport HD with mysky is about $1200 a year. If all of your sport is under the PLP/NFL/MLB etc model of an online platform, it should come out under that cost - plus you get a lot more (live) content. The only thing making anything expensive is sky bundling their content behind a pay wall with connection fees.

on another note, I just realised the reason PLP gave me for not having local times on their website was that neulion doesn't really work with being able to do it.

But I use NFL game pass which is on the same platform and they have the option of switching listed kickoff times to your local time.

So that was clearly a lie. I think they were just lazy and figured no one would notice or care.

My understanding from talking to people involved with PLP support is that it's not a case of Neulion can't do it, but they only want to bother Neulion with major things, since Neulion doesn't have a whole lot of development resources to spend on PLP. It's more a case of them pushing the priority things first, I just think they underestimated how much of a priority this should be.

Besides, I wrote some code to fix that issue for you, so stop complaining about it!! ;)

I currently pay $100-$150 each for NFL & PLP, I will be adding NHL closer to the season.

For full live and on demand coverage I  am willing to pay this for each sport I watch. And actually prefer it to paying $1200 to Sky for a service where they tell me what will be on at any set time, and can't choose my own live event.

Other Sports I would want and pay for: Triathlon, A-League, Football International Tournaments, Formula 1, V8 Supercars, & Olympics.  If just one more of these goes online I will cancel as Lightbox/Netflix provide plenty of kids TV, and Disney Junior actually load a bunch of their stuff onto Youtube as well...

All up I am pretty close to cutting the cord. (Think the only thing I will miss is the History Channel)

I'll miss Soho but certainly getting more and more comfortable with the online services. It will help me more when they upgrade the broadband service in my area (May next year apparently).

This is very significant and quashes a lot of the arguments made in this thread.

Many have said things akin to 'sky wont be silly enough to be outbid again' etc etc etc. The above shows that it is not up to Sky and how much they can throw at it - when it comes down to it, the sporting bodies themselves can choose where and how their content is broadcast. And this happening with golf suggests that more of them will be looking online, whatever sums Sky might be willing to pay.

There will definitely be some major sky execs very worried given what has happened here.

It will be a testbed to discover marketability. If the sporting bodies get healthy enough figures, they would no longer need to on-sell content to third party providers and become sole providers for digital content themselves. The cost of setting this up for the global market is easily outweighed by the potential revenue of being the sole provider.

Going to try a full live game on PLP for the first time tonight. Usually for middle of the night games I watch as live when I get up in the morning but with Arsenal being the 11.45pm game tonight I may aswell stay up. Be interesting to see if it's any worse live when a lot of other people will be streaming the same game at the same time.

My stream quality was fine but I was getting ajc's famous judder tonight on my tv...

I tried switching the output to tv only, so the laptop wasn't having to work hard to create two pictures, but whenever I did it, flashplayer would crash! Eventually I just had to give up and put up with it juddering, playing on two screens unnecessarily.

Any tips on how to have output on tv only without crashing flashplayer? I was using firefox.

Yeah I was getting a bit of the judder on the TV again last night. I've come to accept this is the best it's going to be for me until either a Playstation app is released or Sky win the rights back. It's better to be able to watch it either live, or as live as soon as I get up than to have to wait for up to 24 hours trying to avoid scores to get a better quality delayed version.

Have just watch a movie off my laptop connected to my TV this afternoon and it was absolutely perfect with no judder issues.

was the judder when you were watching live? Double tapping the pause button fixes that. Means you're a split second behind, but no big deal.

The Liverpool v Villa game was start and stop for me when I got on to it at the 70th minute. It even booted me off twice. Perhaps because of the numbers using. Sometimes being a QPR fan has advantages, such as low viewer numbers against teams outside the top 6 big ones.

Their share price is still fairly robust, so those execs might not be too bothered:

It was live, although I was 5 minutes behind anyway so that wouldn't have made a difference. It was the general judder I get when connected to the TV via HDMI, although it has been better for non live this season. Maybe due to the number of people watching at the same time, I don't know. I would assume the 11.45pm game gets the most live viewers.

I too watched this whole game....great result btw

My quality was excellent no issues at all. And that was streaming through my iPad on appletv.

I'm on the old Telstra clear cable and find that the quality is very consistently good.
