I've just renewed my subscription.  Wasn't really paying attention, but the Copa starts this weekend if anyone was waiting to join for some reason.

Anyone know if there will be highlights packages for Copa America? On during work hours so weekday games won't be able to watch live.

Not sure about highlights but assume games will be on-demand at least.

Sounds like ABs & SANZAR have renewed their contract with Sky for 5 years, interested to see the figures when they come out.

5 years???

Both NZ Rugby and NZ Cricket have been very naive with their most recent tv rights in my opinion.

We are at the tipping point of a major shift in the tv rights market, and that shift has seen the value of sporting rights in particular increase exponentially over the last couple of years. Everything I've read indicates that the increase in that value is set to continue.

To sign contracts at the lengths they have, with a television company so behind the 8 ball when it comes to the internet, well f*ck, that just seems like madness to me.

I guess the difference with them and something just being broadcast from overseas like the EPL is that Sky also film and produce all the coverage and have all the infrastructure in place. Not quite as simple as getting Coliseum or someone to broadcast it.

Yes, understood, but that's kind of what I'm talking about with the tipping point in this market.

Overseas, behaviour in the sports seems to be that they are starting to fund the filming and extra programming themselves, and go direct to suppliers who broadcast only, thus removing that requirement and making the broadcasting market wider and more competitive. Then the prices they can get go up and the sport itself reaps the rewards.

Doing something like that may not be feasible immediately for NZ Rugby and NZ Cricket, but they should certainly realise that within 5 or 8 years it is going to change a lot, and it may well become easier to undertake once they are able to reference more test cases from around the world.

I can understand your point for sure, but we just don't know how long that point will be relevant, so signing up to lengthy broadcasting agreements at the moment to me is very short-sighted.

Especially when we hear that Google are sitting at the NRL negotiating table... if Google pay huge bucks then I'm pretty sure the NRL will be more than happy to set up their own filming/programming departments and get cracking...

It's been assumed that Google might be looking at Australia and the NRL as a bit of a test market for plans to move into the tv rights/broadcasting arena. If that's true then that is a bit exciting.

I wonder why they haven't considered NZ as a test market? Perhaps they want something bigger.

Isn't that how we originally got eftpos in NZ? I'm sure I remember reading that we were the test market for that, and that we have always been a very advanced society when it comes to electronic transactions because of it.

I have suspicions that they'd be better off selling the broadcast rights, and then separately working on a contract for the production part of the deal. Of course if they don't put that option out there they will continue to just deal with Sky.

Can only assume NZ rugby and cricket have looked into it and the sums from Sky are massive. Sky's whole business pretty much relies on rugby so they wouldn't let it go easily. They could cope with a few grumbles over losing EPL and PGA golf but doubt they'd survive losing rugby. Be interesting to see if they make a competitive bid for EPL when it's up for bidding again next year.

We seem to be moving to the point where everything is going to come from a different provider and eventually you may end up paying the same or even more than a Sky subscription for TV, sport etc.

Oh Sky would be done if they lost Rugby, so I'd presume they have overpaid for it this time around, am quite surprised at the 5yr deal though, seems a bit long given the current environment in this part of the world.

I expect that over the next 5 years we'll be spending more than the $80/mth for Sky Sport, BUT we'll also get better service of each individual sport, each online service I subscribe to provides more coverage, all games available live & on demand, multiple on one screen.

And I think from about 2018/19 onwards we'll see parts of it start to come back together again with multiple online providers offering the same content (eg Non-exclusive deals - TV shows/movies first, then Sports), or maybe it'll be through certain providers banding together to provide a deal if you subscribe to both (Like PLP & Lightbox,  or PLP & NFL had last year)

Sounds logical.

Sport does seem to be lagging behind movies/tv series in this movement.

Happens every time there is something popular on at a time people need to use Sky Go (ie, during work hours). As predictable as Ticketek's website going down when something big goes on sale.

It's made extra funny because when TV One streamed the Americas Cup they didn't seem to have half the issues.

I find Sky Go never works at any time. Last night I wanted to watch the Origin while keeping an eye on the Ashes - perfect scenario to use Sky Go. But just couldn't get it playing on either Chrome or Firefox. Kept getting a message about "an error with the drm." After refreshing a hundred times it eventually played for 5 minutes then stopped. Ended up finding a dodgy free stream instead of the one I've paid to be able to use.

Tegal, how much is FoxSoccerPlus?

You mentioned you got it for a month?

I've gone to the subscribe page here;

http://www.foxsoccerplus.com/subscribe

I'm not subscribing yet, just trying to find out how much. That page asks for a zip code. I'm at work so haven't got Hola Unblocker going, but how do I sign up based on that page? Will the VPN take care of that detail or do I have to enter something in that box?

Think I just entered my zip code and it worked fine? Or a fake American one. Can't remember sorry. i can't quite remember how much it was but remember thinking it was approximately the same as PLP for a year. Yakcall signed up yesterday, so he'll have more up to date info!

Also foxsoccer2go is the one you want. That's the online one, whereas plus seems to be the actual cable subscription.

As expected, we're moving more and more towards needing to subscribe to a different service for each sport or even competition you're interested in.

Pretty much.

We need the next step in this evolution now - an 'aggregation provider' if you will... you tell them what you want to watch, they source all the different services you need and package it into a personalised interface for you... with one fee...

I think I just created a new market.

That's not a bad idea. Though seems easier just to use labeled bookmarks on your laptop. Am sure some would pay for it though, especially if it aggregated them across devices.

The slight inconvenience is worth the greater content and cheaper price.

Once every sport/competition is completely separated, I'm not convinced it will be cheaper if there are several you're interested in.

I think that's where there is a market for pay TV. People who watch a lot of sports casually would be happy with 1-2 games a week or whatever (think sky now with the EPL, or ESPN with MLB, NBA etc). While those who like to watch as many games as possible would sign up for the individual online service for access to every game live etc (MLB TV, NBA league pass, Premierleaguepass).

Or at least a single internet service which provided a range of football comps

Just had a chance to have a look. $100 a year or $20 a month (USD).

FOXSOCCER2GO - Football streaming and on demand from the USA:

Including A-League, UEFA Champions League, Euro 2016 qualifiers etc.

I tried it recently and it was on demand. Everything on there is on demand for 7 days, except something (can't remember which) that is only for 3 days.

I signed up for a month with a NZ credit card to try it out.

Here are all five of the legal online football streaming services from the US outlined and reviewed:

Some as cheap as $US 6.99 per month

http://worldsoccertalk.com/2015/02/27/which-soccer-streaming-service-is-best-for-you-fubo-sling-dishworld-klowdtv-or-fox-soccer-2go/

NB Only FUBO supports Chromecast.

All have on demand.

Bundesliga is migrating to foxsoccer2go this coming season.

Some great options there across the five services..

Scroll down to read viewers' opinions on the merits of the various services.

There seem to be much cheaper alternatives there to foxsoccer2go.

Compare all five before you make a decision.

Thanks for that info. Looks like Foxsoccer2go for me as it's the only one with Champions League, unless we get some NZ option.

An option for watching Champions League is if you have a family member or friend who trusts you, and they subscribe to Sky Sport, to use their Sky Go account with their permission for watching stuff.

However, it would be best to have someone who never or rarely uses Sky Go because it can be streamed by only device at a time. So it would be no good if they wanted to use it.

Sling International has Arsenal TV.  So you could look to get that instead of Foxsoccer2go if you are just after Arsenal in the Champions League.  I mean there's no point in paying extra for the quarter-finals onwards if you don't have to.
