So does this mean Andy Carroll has to go move in with Steven Gerrard?

I think if you can get 50m for Torres then spending 15m less than that on Andy Carroll is not a bad bit of business. Carroll is going to be the best English CF of his generation whereas Torres is still a big injury risk in my book.

Effectivley Carrol and Suarez for 7.8 mil squid. Not bad business. Torres has been average at best when not injured. Damn I wish Everton had some money to spend.

Its no longer a problem.

Doesn't say much for English strikers then. Massively overrated.

Three for me, and two for them.

was the best player on the pitch when i saw arsenal lose to newcastle at the emirates
work rate was phenomenal, anyone who came near him couldnt get close to the ball with his physicality and smart movement. He can well shoot too.

if kenny can have him well motivated every game he'll be a superstar

This. Everytime i've seen him play he gives the defenders all sorts of problems in the air and on the ground. He's like John Carew but with a heap more guile.

Carroll is good but not 35m good

dont think anyone thinks he is, but the reality is we NEEDED a replacement and with such little time left any player would have come with a massive premium

everybody seems to want to equate selling price with ability
although it does seem logical thats not completely how it is

english players will always cost more in england - the merchandise and promotional value is massive. If carroll becomes a regular for england which seems likely at some stage, 35mil will take care of itself pretty quickly when it comes to merchandise sales etc etc. Arsenal pull in 3.5mil in revenue every matchday, a large chunk of which (possibly the majority even) comes from merchandise sales - i would assume that Perennial strugglers Liverpool will be making a lot of money every single matchday in a similar manner, and having a successful english striker in the team will significantly boost that.

Ignoring the prices altogether, the simple equation of 27yo torres = 21yo carroll AND 23yo suarez tells me it was good business

oh and fyi arsenal's entire starting side yesterday cost 10mil less than torres :)

Also, Newcastle would have pushed the price up due to it being so late in window and they hadn't organised a replacement, so part of that 35 is remuneration for Newcastle having to play the remainder of the season with Ameobi, Lovernkrands and Best as first choice strikers.

Evertons entire squad currently is worth about 30 mill (at a stretch), thats 20 mil less than Torres.

Its no longer a problem.

Worth? Or how much they cost to bring in?

I only ask because I'm sure David Moyes said Rodwell wouldn't be going to Man United unless we spent a lot of money on him, and if that's the case, the rest of the squad must be worth not a lot.

Yes but Arsenal's squad is actually good.

Three for me, and two for them.

Ok, so cost then. Everton do tend to bring a few decent players through the ranks so cost has been low. But even so, who is the squad would sell for more than 10 mil if Pienaar was only worth 3.5 mil? Rodwell maybe. Possibly Cahill, Arteta. We have a sh*t strike force so our value is seriously deminished. We do have a decent midfield and defence but these players aren't worth as much in the open market.

Its no longer a problem.

Yeah you are not wrong - of course it depends on contract length etc. - all you have to do is get Manchester City or Europa League side Chelsea interested and you can sell them Leon Osman for 38 mill.

If someone (maybe even the Redsh*te) offered 38 mill for Osman we'd snap their hand off taking it. There is a lot of talent in the club an 38 mill could bring in some decent talent. Hell, we could have bought Carroll or Suarez.

Its no longer a problem.

That's an interesting post, paulm.  Is there any link saying how much the Arsenal squad all cost?  Individually, I mean.

A lot players signed on free transfer and players signed from europe before they are 18 and allowed to sign professional contracts in their home countries. Not unrealistic. Better indicator is the wage bill.

of arsenal's starting line-up v everton there was not one player bought in on a free transfer, but there were a couple purchased nominally as they were u18 as you point out bullion.

i dont have a link to anywhere giving actuals - arsenal never releases actual figures anyway, but from memory the prices were reported to be approx;

Szcsesny - nominal (u18 when purchased)
Sagna - 6m
Koscielny - 8m
Djourou - nominal (u18 when purchased)
Clichy - 2m
Song - 500k
Wilshere - free, academy product
Walcott - 10m
Fabregas - nominal (u18 when purchased)
Rosicky - 10m
V.Persie - 2m

As you can see a good number of the squad were still purchased just like torres, carroll etc etc. We just didn't pay as much coz no one but arsene and his cronies knew they were any good.

I think a fair few clubs knew Rosicky and Walcott were the goods.

Man Utd got Hernandez for 7m and Spurs got VdV for 8m, you can't tell me no one else knew those two players were class except Utd and Spurs.

Three for me, and two for them.

pienaar only went so cheap because his contract was on the verge of expiring, if everton had held out for too much he'd go on a free in 6 months - 3.5m is better than nothing for a player who wants out

he's clearly worth more than 3.5mil if he's signed to a longer term contract - eg carroll signed a 5year contract for Newcastle in October, thereby pushing his fee up considerably

people seem to want to equate the size of the fee directly with the player's ability but there's more to it than that

fair point re: walcott - he chose arsenal
rosicky, not so much - remember we signed him just before the 06 WC, everyone said who? and then before he'd played for us he scored two absolute screamers for the czechs. Then everyone knew who he was...

As for hernandez/vdv, yep those were two very good pieces of transfer business - but just a drop in the bucket of the spending of their respective clubs

Started up a new save of football manager 2010 as Europa League side Chelsea and tried to sign Torres. They accepted a bid of 80million pounds and I offered Torres a much better deal than what he was getting at Perennial strugglers Liverpool. He rejected me saying he would be 'very reluctant' to leave Perennial strugglers Liverpool. I looked at his hidden attributes and it said Loyalty: 20/20.
