You're right, it's quite possible that Jones' amazing man-marking on Rooney provided the space for Berbatov to score five goals in one match.
The guy is only a kid and of course no Arse player had a poor game this year. If AF thinks that he is worth it I'm sure he will make a good player. After all his success with young players is well known. Jones is also an England U21 player.
Don't be snotty just cos no Arse player could score 5 in one match - or even come close.

would 'come close' be 4 goals in one match? do some research pal... our second stringer did that against liverpool to hand you the EPL title in 09

thanks for clarifying!

Berbatov has done well with goals this year, must be looking at a pay rise, oh wait... he might be leaving? And owen was re-signed?

Over the years Leggy has been notable by his tolerence. Banter implies an element of humour, intelligence, originality or something that lifts it above the level of just plain rubbish. To use an old fashion term you are just boorish.

Next up:

Article also says that we are progressing with a bid on Raphael Varane.
Could have De Gea (20) and Varane (18) along with those already at the club the Da Silva twins (20), Smalling (21) and Jones (19) in the team for the next decade.

The future certainly looking bright.

I think in the current market we actually got him for a pretty good price. 25 years old - still a couple of years away from the traditional peak years of his career. He's beginning to establish himself in the England team and he's proven himself at a top ten side for several seasons before this. Good signing I say. It'll be interesting to see what happens with Nani now as he won't be that happy with the news I'm sure. I read an article a while back saying Young will be purchased as a CAM or second striker but not convinced by that as Ferguson openly admits he doesn't like playing with an attacking midfielder.

I was thinking the other night and I'm actually not convinced we will sign a big name midfielder (thinking of Nasri, Modric, Sneijder etc.). Your're right nzmanu, the attacking midfielder spot isn't in Fergie's traditional formation.

Our top line up is potentially going to be something like this:
-------------------------------De Gea---------------------
-----Rafael-------Ferdinand--------Vidic-------Evra---
--------------------Fletcher-----------Carrick---------
-----Valencia-----------------------------------Young--
---------------------------Rooney----------------------
--------------------------Hernandez--------------------

So Rooney plays in the forward playmaking role, with Hernandez ahead of him. Welbeck and Berbatov (if he stays) will offer options up front. Park, Nani (again if he stays), and Cleverley can be added into the three behind Hernandez (and tweak where everyone plays), and Anderson and Giggs offer options in the middle of the park. This is where we are a bit weak still I think, and might need strengthening.

So the options there could be Diarra, Rodwell etc. Obviously Piil Jones has a bit of experience there, and Tunnicliffe and Pogba are coming through. Maybe Ferguson will give these guys a shot instead.

So, in sum, I'm not convinced a big name attacking midfielder will arrive, with the possible exception of Nasri if the Arse don't offer him decent money to stay. But I think there will be one more signing for the middle of the park.

Varane has signed with Real Madrid.

I hope Nani stays. I see the purchase of Young as someone who can play centrally in Rooney's role and gives the team more flexibility.

If SAF has confidence in our youngsters coming through in the CM position then we may not need to purchase anyone, I still do feel it is position where we lack a world class player.

Think I read the other day that Tunnicliffe will spend at least some time on loan at the start of the season, so Ferguson will have to content with Pogba if he wants one of the current youngsters to really push for a starting role.

Don't think so - though I don't think even he knows when he's going to throw it in.

Now we have overtaken Liverpool with 19, I would say as soon as his health maybe isn't quite so up to scratch, he will seriously consider retiring. Until then, I expect him to continue refreshing and updating the squad.

Fantastic news about De Gea, I just gotta learn how to say his name properly.

Ha I've heard it said a few different ways:

David de Gay-a
David de Hay-a
David de Thay-a

And I've also heard David pronounced the way we say David and also the other way of saying it like David Villa.

Lol who knows.

What are your guys preferences for our final major transfer, assuming its a central midfielder. My preferences in order are:

1. Sneijder - easily the best candidate to replace Scholes IMO. Was instrumental in Inter's CL win and the Netherlands' strong performance in SA. Wage demands and a love for Milan could count against us.
2. Nasri - had a good season last year and he's never going to win anything at Arsenal . Still young and knows the English game. The dirty money at City, and Arsenal's reluctance to strengthen our squad are potential issues.
3. Thiago Alcantara - Young with amazing talent. Perhaps not ready to fill Scholes' boots. Like Arsenal, Barca would be reluctant to sell to a direct rival for the CL.
4. Modric - good player but I'm not his biggest fan, although he knows the English game and has done well for Spurs. Spurs won't sell, and he wants to join Chelsea are the two main issues.

Players we have been linked with that I hope we don't sign:
Charlie Adam - not United quality. It wasnt hard to stand out in that Blackpool team.
Lassana Diarra - not good enough for Chelsea or Real, therefore not good enough for United. He's no better than what we already have, and I don't see him as a like for like replacement for Scholes. Overpriced.
Steven Defour - unproven, probably over priced. Has gone off the radar. Too much of a gamble at 15-20 million pounds.
Jack Rodwell - young and strong are two positives. A less talented version of Phil Jones. Couldn't even make the Everton starting line up towards the end of last season and Cleverley started over him in central midfield at the U21 Euros. Again, not a like for like replacement for Scholes and no where near ready to play for United IMO.

Thoughts?

Diarra is significantly better as a player than anything you've got in that position. It's just his attitude that is problematic.

Yeah, we don't really have a pure DM.

Sneijder is good, but I feel that he is best suited to a position that is similar to where Rooney has played. If SAF thinks Sneijder can do a job in a deeper position then that is great.

I do like the idea of a player like Nasri, he can play just about anywhere in the midfield.

English papers running the story that Nasri is aware of the 20 million pound bid made for him by United 10 days ago, and will request a move tomorrow.

Personally I think it's still unlikely at this stage - lots of talk about Sneijder today as well, which kind of balances it all out.

Those quotes he made last week do help our case though, about it being about winning trophies and not money. Otherwise he'd go to City.

Very interesting times ahead.

At Fergie's first press conference in the States he said he didn't think Nasri would be coming to United. I wonder if this is mind games, or the truth. Comments out of Sneijder make me think he is happy enough to come, but if Inter don't want to sell then he won't force it. Fair enough too.

Fergie also said youth players would get the chance to replace Scholes, so that points to Cleverley, Pogba, and Morrison getting cracks next year.
