Smudge now on loan at MK Dons.  They're paying a pittance for him.

Good luck, Alan.  You may not have been the best signing, but you are a top bloke.

Ed has followed up on this link, with a comment on Sky Sports' story that a fee has been agreed and Yanga-Mbiwa will be transferred subject to passing a medical.  The video attached makes him look very good, and as it's all from the one match it doesn't quite feel like a highlights reel.  (Says nothing about consistency, of course.)

Other possibilities:

Tranquilo Barnetta will be out of contract at the end of the season.  We were linked to him six months ago, and are probably still tracking the lad.  Eljero Elia, a much younger winger at Juventus, is supposedly close to a move.

We're linked with defender Jores Okore, but face stiff competition.

Most of the other news is talking about how there could be a last minute swoop for one of our best players.  Yawn.

Glad I didn't mention the FA Cup tie in that post.

At least it means we won't have to face Stevenage again.

Still in a state of Relief.  No big departures, a lucky 3 points, all is well with the Toon.

Actually, sitting in a Europa League spot and only three points behind 4th, it's better than "well".  Too soon to be predicting a late charge, but the Dembas will be coming on-stream and the squad is completely focused on the EPL.  The next five fixtures are:

Aston Villa
at Spurs
Wolves
5under1and
at 4rsen4l

Should win all the home games and hope to get some change out of London.  Spurs will be returning home from Anfield, while the Gunners will have had a short rest after a horror week (Spurs/Liverpool/AC Milan).  On that note, the only fixture pile-up left for Newcastle is 7/4/12 at Swansea and 9/4/12 hosting Bolton.

I am confident of a strong finish.

Hopeful but not confident.  Still, this has been a good season so far. Didn't the wheels fall off around this time last season?

Majorly conflicted for the 2nd fixture but all those other ones look do-able.

Not really.  It's round 23, but as you can see we were very much a mid-table team last season - finishing 12th at half-way and 12th at the end of term.  For the record, Newcastle were 7th at half-way this season.

I thought there wasn't something right about last season. I've just checked and it was our slide down the table from early on, but more importantly that we didn't finish 9th or higher...

im assuming the 3 question marks relate to you not having chosen your 3rd EPL side to support just yet

what other teams havent won the league for 50+ years?

Oh - that's what you posted. I like this drupel with dolby NR platform.

Have been thinking that I should chose an underdog team, one that always fails to play to its potential and also one that will put me in touch with the youth (15-25 yo), so I can learn why they spout so much "lame drivel" (I think that's what you call it in your wonderful street lingo).

Maybe this one?

Please take the North London banter elsewhere.  nPower League Whatever forum or Spurs thread, I don't care which.

Michael Richardson - our ginger late-bloomer - has signed an extension with Newcastle, as has Brad "Kaka" Inman.  Youngsters due to be released include Tamas Kadar, Joan Edmundsson, Jeff Henderson, Greg McDermott, Patrick Nzuzi, Dan Taylor and Phil Airey.  Particularly disappointed about Kadar and Edmundsson, and slightly surprised about Airey.  I hope all these lads, those staying and those leaving, have bright futures and fond memories of their time at the club.

"Weve got to try and keep it going, and chase Chelsea down." - Alan Pardew, speaking to the Chronicle.

Barcelona must be shaking in their boots!

Also, having finally watched the highlights against Blackburn: Krul is fantastic!  And he has another twelve to fifteen good years as a 'keeper.  Good work from a number of the fringe players, Perch especially.  Here's hoping that breaking the egg will get Obertan on the way to fulfilling his potential in England.

Anyone hoping for cup glory?  Don't forget the FA Youth Cup!  5th Round upcoming, with the R's youngsters coming north.  Those who don't have a second choice for the competition may wish to back West Ham's youth team, which features Rob Lee's son Oliver.  (They're still on the opposite side of the draw from Newcastle, so a dream final is possible.)

Newcastle last won the FA Youth cup in 1985 (0-0, 4-1 over Watford).  Paul Gascoigne scored a brilliant 30 yarder in the second leg.  I don't know if the cup-winning team had any other great footballers in it, though Bristol City fans might remember Brian Tinnion with some fondness.

By coincidence, goals from Michael Hoganson and Dennis Knight put this year's Newcastle U18s through the fourth round against - Watford.

Villa will be out to solidify their reputation as Toon rivals, while Newcastle have last season's 6-0 victory to improve upon.  Previews at .co.uk, ESPN FootballNet and the Guardian.

.com reports that Newcastle's forwards are all a bit jaded.  The club's followers in the States are all a-twitter about a possible pre-season tie with Philadelphia Union.  The Chronicle notes that Steven Taylor is recovering nicely, but won't play again this season.  And the Sunderland Echo, for some reason, sees fit to report on Newcastle's good luck.

Ed at .com reports that Demba Ba's infamous release clause may be eliminated by giving the lad a new contract.  It would seem that the club agreed with Ba to pay him so-so wages on the understanding that he could leave for very little compensation.  Now Newcastle are looking to give him the improved contract without the need for a change of location.

Also in line for new deals: Cabaye & Krul (more money), Colo (more time), and Ryan Taylor (a bit of both).

sadly for arsenal fans their highlight of the season so far is Harry redknapp being in court.

anyhoo, another solid performance from the toon. this is great to watch, with cabaye and tiote still to come back.

good times indeed. a tough away schedule left, but some winnable games at home

I hope to see Marveaux back, too!  Should get something out of those three London games - Spurs may be too good, but Arsenal and Chelsea have issues this season.

Derby by proxy this weekend (Newcastle & Arsenal vs. Spurs & 5under1and).  I will only predict two things.

1.  Spurs vs. Newcastle will be much more watchable for the neutrals.  Space and punshing just makes for a better game.
2.  Certain entities will find something disagreeable about the combined result.

I could add something like, "RVP's next club will be discussed more than the result of the other game", but that's getting into "a ball will be kicked" territory.

At half time, I was feeling a bit punshy, but the good spirit of the game between Ba and Bale turned my scowl into a sheepish grin.  Seemed like Jermaine and Colo defoe get along, and Emmanuel and Danny adey a little chat, too.

That "only particularly tricky fixture" remark is looking more solid, too.

Young Haris Vuckic is off at Cardiff for a month - I didn't notice it with all the hullaballoo about Spurs!  He's made two starts for just over 120 minutes and scored one goal.  Tidy.

What a funny man he is becoming over the last few seasons. No doubt they can win some "trophy" when they play over in Asia during the pre-season too.

(Maybe NUFC could come over here and play a trophy game against the Nix or ECFC?  I'd pay good NZD to see that.)

I believe the plan for next pre-season is to tour the States.  It would probably be cheaper to go see an EPL game.
