The keeper saves the ball but he does it outside his area, his defender is certain that the ref has given a free kick and angrily kicks the ball into his own net. However, the ref had missed the keeper was outside his area and rules it as a goal...

The ref shouldn't rule that a goal. There's a law about being able to stop play if he believes that a whistle has caused a large interference with play.

Funny though.

He may have saved his keeper being sent.

Oh true, there was no whistle. Sorry, I didn't read the blurb properly and thought the guy kicked it in the net because he had heard a whistle and thought play had stopped. You can't hear a whistle in the footage either. He must have just assumed one because it was so blatantly a free kick (and red card).

What the heck I can't understand is why the ref hadn't already called a free kick ??!
