I know at least one person here will be interested: Hellas Verona FC in a playoff final for promotion out of Lega Pro Prima (formerly known as Serie C) against Pescara. First leg at home ends 2-2; 1-0 to Verona at half time, but defender sent off for dodgy handball call. Pescara grab two goals, but Verona equalise right on the buzzer. Highlights with Italian commentary!

Since Pescara finished ahead in regular season, i giallobl must win the return fixture away to get back into Serie B.

As I've said elsewhere, if Hellas are promoted then my loyalties will conflict as my beloved Livorno are also in Serie B next year, but...

Interesting to see how you like two teams that sit at the opposite end of the political scale.
on the one hand, the extreme right-wing with neo-nazi tendencies Hellas Verona and on the other, the left-wing, revolutionary red-brigade Livorno.
Sure, you [usually] don't support your teams because of their political affiliations, but this is a bit of a pickle!

Very much in the driving seat - third time we've defeated Salernitina this season, bring on a fourth and bring on Serie B! On the way back up!

Salernitana up 1-0 at half time. Goal just before the HT whistle - penalty kick for alleged tripping inside the box. Verona still leading 2-1 on aggregate. Hellas Verona, vinci per noi!

VITTORIA!!!! PROMOZIONE!!!!*
SOLO
HELLAS!!!!

*ahem* Final score 1-0, Hellas Verona win 2-1 on aggregate and are promoted to Serie B.

One step closer to back where we belong

I am so freakin' overjoyed right now!

*Promozione as in Promotion, as in "Hellas Verona achieved promotion to Serie B". Not Promozione as in the 7th division of Italian football, as in "Chievo belongs in the Promozione"

What a great year for the Giallobl teams. AFC Wimbledon and Hellas promoted. Now just need Mt Albert Ponsonby to win the NRFL Div 2 and my year is complete.

It just says so much that Hellas can still get 20,000 to the ground after four years down in the fail leagues, whereas Chievo are Serie A's equivalent of Gold Coast (4-5,000 or so). But what about this new stadium they're talking about building? What would it mean to move from the Bentegodi (where I assume the mussivolanti will still be playing?)

... oh, and check the flash intro to the sito ufficiale.

AFC Wimbledon's year is also a plus for me, throw in Swansea and I've liked a lot of promotions!

Chievo is a joke and always will be. Hellas is the only team referred to solely as Verona for a reason - they're the only real club the city has.

New stadium is part of a proposed sporting precinct put forth by our owner. It's a Hellas initiative, not a city one, so Chievo won't be welcome. I imagine if this goes ahead, we'll have Verona at New Arena Stadium. Don't give a sh*t what happens to Chievo, hopefully they'll get their own stadium in their own suburb so both of their fans can stop polluting ours

Saw the flash intro, cracked me up - the Italian text reads "Excuse the delay". Bwahaha. Now just to get back to Serie A!

Salernitana have gone bust and will have to reform down in the amateur divisions (no English-language link I can find yet, but it's all over the Italian football intarwebz). Perhaps karma for those terroni's awful behaviour after the playoff.

Gutted for Salerno, wouldn't wish that on any club.

Yeah, me and Mandorlini.

On a more serious note, I do note that Verona have been caught up in the latest huge match-fixing standard, but I haven't found a source in English or in simple Italian explaining exactly what they're being investigated for.

Two Serie A clubs must face a committee investigating renewed claims of match-fixing in Italian football.

Giuseppe Signori is the most famous name investigated in the probe
Atalanta and Udinese are among 18 clubs set to face the Italian Football Federation's (FIGC) sporting prosecutor following an investigation undertaken by the public prosecutor of Cremona.

Three Serie B teams - Ascoli, Hellas Verona and Sassuolo - 11 Pro League teams - Alexandria, Cremonese, Benevento, Ravenna, Virtus Entella, Piacenza, Esperia Viareggio, Portogruaro, Taranto, Spezia and Reggiana - and two amateur sides - Cus Chieti and Pino Di Matteo - will also be called before the prosecutor at the hearings starting early next month.

Ah, here it is:

VERONA: per responsabilit oggettiva per omessa denuncia del direttore sportivo Mauro Gibellini (Verona-Ravenna).

As far as I can tell, something dodgy went on at a Verona-Ravenna game, and the question is why Verona didn't report it. Considering that Ravenna's sporting director is currently under house arrest, it looks like a doozy.

Interesting matches in the next round: while Verona play Sassuolo, the flying donkeys of Chievo come up against my other Italian team, Livorno. That would be a sweet victory.Doloras2011-08-15 18:07:39

Italian Cup, round 3: Sassuolo 3 - 3 Verona (2-4 on penalties). FACCI SOGNARE! Playing either Parma or Grosseto in the fourth round (last round before the top 8 come in), but that's not until November.

Also, FORZA AMARANTI, VAFFANCULO MUSSIVOLANTI.

FT Parma 0 - 2 H. Verona Verona go through to the round of 16 where they will face Mussolini's Finest, Lazio.

This is actually the first time I've watched i butei play live. The game wasn't much superior in quality to, say, Nix-SFC - quite similar, in fact, in that Verona were nuggety on defence, hot on counter-attack and kept putting the ball up the wings and crossing it in. The main difference is that Verona seem much better at dispossessing the opposition without giving away fouls than the Nix.

Livorno 0 - 2 H. Verona. Seven league wins and a cup win on the trot. I butei now in second, an automatic promotion spot. Two promotions in two years?!? Best not to dream to fiercely with the season not even half over.

With three top players suspended, a 0-0 draw away to Varese (after eight league wins on the trot) was a pretty good ending to 2011. With one game left to play in the first round, Verona are clear second in Serie B on 38 points, three behind Torino and one ahead of Sassuolo. Facci sognare, indeed.

Interesting that the other team promoted from Lega Pro after a playoff, Juve Stabia, is also doing pretty well, challenging for a playoff spot even after being docked 5 points for financial irregularities. In contrast, the two winners of Lega Pro, Gubbio and Nocerina, are well down in relegation-land.

... oh, and the replacement Modena goalkeeper will be having nightmares for weeks after the final goal of that match. Anyone thought Warner's flub against SFC was bad, check this out.

Verona finish the first round with a 2-1 win over Modena, with goals in the 87th and 89th minute. The top of the table: Torino 42, Verona 41, Sassuolo 40, Pescara 39, Padova 38, Reggina 31. And you thought the A-League was tight.

Hellas Verona finish 4th in Serie B. They play Varese home-and-away in the playoff semifinal, the winner then facing Sassuolo or Sampdoria. A second consecutive promotion is altogether possible.

It's down to the wire with one game to play!!!

1. Sassuolo 82 41 24 10 7 77 40 +37 2. Verona 81 41 23 12 6 67 32 +35 3. Livorno 80 41 23 11 7 77 46 +31 4. Empoli 72 41 20 12 9 69 51 +18 5. Novara[29] 63 41 19 9 13 72 45 +27 6. Brescia 59 41 14 17 10 56 50 +6
7. Varese[30] 59 40 16 12 12 54 50 +4

Fixtures for next weekend: Verona-Empoli, Sassuolo-Livorno.

If Verona wins, they are back in Serie A after something like 11 years; and if Verona and Livorno both win, then Verona wins Serie B.
If Verona draws, Verona are back in Serie A if Sassuolo also win or draw, or if Livorno wins by 3 goals or more.

If Verona loses, they are still back in Serie A if Sassuolo also win; if Verona lose by less than 4 goals, they can still be promoted if Sassuolo-Livorno draw.

... and if none of the above happen, they're still in first seed for the playoffs.

Facci sognare.
