According to transfermarkt, the old guard's contracts expire fairly soon:

Lucio (2014)
Samuel (2012)
Chivu (2012)
Zanetti (2013)
Maicon (2013)
Cambiasso (2014)
Stankovic (2014)
Palombo (2012)
Forlan (2013)
Milito (2014)

I think Inter will be contesting the European places for the next few years, though a lot depends on how well they bring forward their new blood.

Ranieri sacked, replaced by Andrea Stramaccioni who has been a youth coach at Inter. I predict AVB to take over soon...

Looks like you'll have to wait until the new year for AVB.  Any idea what the first-choice XI will look like?

At this point it really depends on who gets bought and sold. I'd be very surprised (and stoked) if Sneijder stays given that there's no champion's league football for Inter this year - although I haven't actually heard many rumours about him going. Pazzini looks to be going, Gillardino might be coming in, Julio Cesar is rumoured to be going back to Brazil. So for now I'd guess something like this:

                                      Handanovic

Maicon              Ranocchia                Samuel            Nagamoto

                                     Cambiasso

              Zanetti                                          Stankovic

                                       Alvarez

                          Milito                   Gillardino

Assuming that Sneijder and Pazzini go and Gillardino comes.... but I get the feeling there's gonna be a few more transfers yet.

On the plus side we have a few good youngsters coming through now (Couthinho, Longo, Obi, Juan, etc) so if we can hold onto them for a couple of years it could be the basis for a good team. I don't have high hopes for this season though.

Doesn't look great.

A couple of updates for you: Maicon's out of the tour squad (ditto Cesar & Pazzini), so you can probably replace him with Johnathan.  Silvestre may be competing for one of the CB spots, or - less likely - it could be 3 at the back this term.

Yeah, I know pretty much nothing about Silvestre personally so I went for Samuel over him, but The Wall is getting old and might miss out. Zanetti's old too but that doesn't make a difference to him!

I'd like to see this formation

                               Handanovic

Zanetti          Zanetti                Zanetti               Zanetti

                                 Zanetti

               Zanetti                           Zanetti

                                 Zanetti

                      Zanetti           Zanetti

beat Hajduk Split 3-2 in EL qualifying, didn't catch it but sounded like the first leg was a great performance and the second was awful. Anyway Stripes here's the lineup from the 2nd leg:

Handanovic; Jonathan, Ranocchia, Samuel, Mbaye; Zanetti, Cambiasso, Guarin; Sneijder; Coutinho, Milito

I was pretty far off!

Probably not that extreme - the 3-0 win was one where pretty much everything Inter hit went in, and Hajduk fluffed a few really good chances.

The return leg (2-0 loss for Inter) went the other way, Inter fluffed their chances and Hajduk's finishing improved. They got a penalty early on, and Vukovic scored a great volley to make Inter really worry about their chances, but couldn't finish the job.

Big problem for Inter was the fitness, Hajduk had already played a few official games so had a bit of an advantage there, but the general consensus from the Croatian forums is that the teams were matched much more closely than they should have been on paper.

Didn't see the Cassano transfer coming, but i'm quite happy about it. From a footballing point of view it may not turn out to well but there's never a dull moment when he's around. Some funny comments from him on the move here: http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story/_/id/1142267/inter-forward-antonio-cassano-attacks-ac-milan?cc=3436
