UEFA Women's Euro 2025

Women's Euro 2025 gets underway in Switzerland next week:
  • Group stage: July 2-13 (local time)
  • Quarter-finals: July 16-19
  • Semi-finals: July 22-23
  • Final: July 27
Games are next day at 4am or 7am NZT, not sure who if anyone has NZ broadcast rights (doesn't appear to be Sky Sport).

The BBC has a good write-up on the competition: England are defending champs but of course Spain are heavily favoured to win. The groups are
  • Group A: Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Finland
  • Group B: Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Italy
  • Group C: Germany, Poland, Denmark, Sweden
  • Group D: France, England, Wales, Netherlands
It'll be interesting to see how the teams compare to their WWC 2023 form, and what that might mean for 2027.

With the opening match just five days away, UEFA director for women's football Nadine Kessler has expressed her excitement for a tournament set to elevate the game even further during a kick-off event at UEFA HQ in Nyon, Switzerland.

[…]

The 2025 edition has already set new records, with ticket sales having surpassed those of Women’s EURO 2022 in England before a ball has even been kicked.

"One of our key goals was to sell out the event. I remember how people laughed when we set this goal, but it's now turning into a reality," said Kessler.

"We set this goal because, for us, it’s the most genuine sign of growth, and of sustainable development. Already, 22 matches (out of 31) are sold out, and 600,000 tickets overall – and that’s without an opening match at Old Trafford or a final at Wembley."

A somewhat self-congratulatory article from UEFA, but once you get past the PR there’s a lot worth reading about how they see the competition supporting long term growth of the women’s game.

Looking at Uefa's list of broadcasters around the world it appears there is no broadcaster for NZ which is a shame.

In Aus it's on Optus Sport which is paid - but the first match and the Final will be free.

The UK appears to have it all free to air through BBC and ITV.

Edit: Actually here is an article from Bonnie Jansen about TVNZ and Sky Sport deciding not to go for the rights.

Some quotes:
TVNZ+ – which broadcast the men’s Euros last year – told the Herald it opted not to pursue the women’s equivalent at this time.

“For TVNZ as a free, commercially funded broadcaster, we’re not in a position to be able to secure all sports rights. We pick and choose, and our decisions will always be based on what rights are available in market, where we can support local, and what our audience would like to see.”

Sky Sport, which secured the broadcast rights to the Women’s Fifa World Cup in 2023, said: “As with all rights decisions, we consider a variety of factors to ensure we are making choices that make financial and strategic sense.”

Sky said the significant time zone difference between Switzerland and New Zealand was a key consideration when assessing the “potential viewership and engagement”.

The comment contradicts their broadcast of this month’s men’s Uefa Nations League, where kickoff was at 7am.

The Euros group stage fixtures are scheduled mainly for 4am and 7am NZT.

Set your VPN to Mexico, then ESPN on Disney + shows you the UEFA Womens world cup tab. Just have to convert the start times to NZ and you're sweet.  Well I hope it actually works.

Otherwise BBC iPlayer and ITVx are free platforms if your VPN is set to the UK

Switzerland may be known for its snow-covered mountains, cosy chalets and world-class skiing, but the sun-scorched country is looking very different for Euro 2025.

As 16 teams prepare to begin their Euro 2025 campaigns, temperatures are soaring across the host nation.

With fears that the grass could burn, huge fans have been placed pitch-side to help keep the turf cool, while supporters have been advised to stay in the shade and keep hydrated.

So just another day in the ALW?

With Spain v Portugal kicking off 7am Friday NZT, a nice backgrounder on Salma Paralluelo (who I've been a huge fan of after watching her in Spain's WWC games at the RoF, especially when she scored that quarter-final winner against the Netherlands):

Spain star's unorthodox rise to top - and struggle to stay there

In October 2024, after making 92 appearances for club and country in under two years, Paralluelo announced she was taking an indefinite break from the game, citing mental and physical fatigue.

She has been battling to rediscover her form since.

This is the story of Paralluelo's remarkable rise to the top of the game, her injury and personal struggles, and why she can still light up Euro 2025 with Spain.

Edit: Speaking of Spain v Portugal, UEFA have confirmed the game will start with a minute’s silence in honour of Diogo Jota.

I run the UEFA app on my AppleTV, no ads, no big mouth experts, just the football and I like those unbiased UEFA commentators delivering the basics.
In the HT break they just show slow mo goals etc from all camera angles, it is a beautiful sport.

Wow, what a start to the competition for Spain - Martin-Prieto's headed goal right at the end just summed it up. And I'm in awe seeing Bonmati back on the pitch looking dangerous so soon after her brush with meningitis.

The UEFA.tv coverage really is great, even without installing the app I had no problems watching the game in a browser on my phone and laptop - so I know what I'll be doing on the train to work these coming weeks.

Ended 2-1 to France.  England with unwanted history being the only title holders to lose their opening game.  Absolutely have to beat the Netherlands now.

Emphatic 4 nil win for England.  Could not have asked for a better response.  Looking forward to watching the match highlights.

There must be a lot of relief in the England camp after that one.

I was hoping Wales could hold out against France, both to make their final game against England more interesting and for other reasons, but oh well they gave it their best.

Spain have looked the best in pool play, followed by the French. Should be an interesting set of quarters.

I’m especially looking forward to Spain v Switzerland, not just because Spain are on fire but because the home crowd will make for a fantastic atmosphere.

Plus being on Saturday morning I can watch the whole thing without work getting in the way.

Very entertaining match, but crazy how many penalties were missed.

The majority of England's missed penalties were hit into pretty much the same spot that was just nowhere near enough to the post to make it hard for the keeper.

I feel like the way the Swedish keeper missed her penalty is so common for keepers - I recall Neuer missing 1 or 2 in the same fashion a few years back - they are too used to kicking for length they blast it over the bar.

Kepa did the same against Liverpool in a League Cup final.

Three for me, and two for them.
