Was it just me or did France have a pretty legit pen shout in ET. In a crowded room with kids running around but did notice VAR had a check.

Very similar to what Japan were awarded. Contact back of calf, but took 2 steps before she went down. I’d say they were unfortunate it wasn’t given. Contact looked to cause loss of balance.
Edit : at 112.14 if you look at a replay

I can't see anything but Suzy Cato when the English coach is shown on screen.

Actually I thought the match officials were weak in this game. The Aussies put in plenty of cynical fouls and body checks. Both Wendy Renard and Le Sommer got kicked in the face(accidentally but still dangerous play). Yet there was only one yellow card. You couldn’t call Australian crowds sporting. They were booing Kachoui when she lay there after having her ankle rolled by an Aussie(fair tackle). This Aussie team has a big heart but won’t win this tournament.

Someone needs to introduce the concept of placing a penalty...

95% of penalties in this world cup just get smashed as hard as they can!!!

Isn't it Sven Goran Eriksonn?

It appears that the refs have been told to be lenient with yellow cards.
That's all very well, but teams work that out and can up the physicality of their challenges.  Their should have been quite a few yellow cards in the Australia and England games, and it got quite rough as a result.

Also, the keeper is allowed to hold the ball for 6 seconds. Yes. SIX!

They bring these rules in,and then totally fail to apply them. Id say holding the ball for more than 6 seconds is now the norm. To my knowledge, not one keeper has been pulled up at this world cup.

2 epic games last night. There was no way Australia were ever losing a shootout in front of their home crowd. Didn't really want to play them there but as an England fan there's noone you'd rather beat in a World Cup so should be an epic occasion.
Looks like it's all set up for Australia to win the thing now having come from the brink of elimination, being at home and Kerr the Messiah is back.

I was thinking something similar watching the Arsenal game. Yellow card offense if there’s more than one coach standing in the technical area from this season, but Arsenal had 3. What’s the point changing the rules to not enforce them?

Still thinking about the nerves of steel it must take to be the keeper in a shootout, take a penalty yourself, and then, having missed, go right back in goal as keeper again. Taking a penalty in a shootout must shred the nerves at the best of times, but then to just step back up again? Ice in her veins!

Their coach said just as much post-game.

This is so funny. Barnaby Joyce was at a pub in fairly rural NSW and instead of watching the WC QF the pub had the FRA vs AUS friendly playing from July, which AUS won 1-0.
https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2023/aug/14/barnaby-joyce-womens-world-cup-2023-watches-wrong-match-matildas-australia-vs-france

Joyce was at the Commercial Hotel in Walcha, and staff at the pub confirmed to Guardian Australia that Joyce did watch the wrong match.
“We hadn’t even realised until today that it was the wrong match. The crowd didn’t notice either, it’s been news to us.”
The staff member could not confirm why the pub had access to an old friendly and not a free-to-air broadcast.

That's what I thought too.  When she walked back I figured she had no chance at the next one because you would be playing that over in your head.

Fudgeing pro is what she is.
