Fifa have ended the policy of rotating the World Cup amongst
the confederations. The new policy is that any national association
can bid for the World Cup as long as its confederation hasn't held
the previous two World Cups. The new policy applies from the 2018
World Cup. This was always going to happen as the rotation policy
meant Concacaf and Oceania were in line for 2018 and 2022. With
Australia in the Asian confederation, that would have left NZ and
the island nations to bid to host 2022. And that wouldn't happen.
And given the US held 1994, that would probably only leave Mexico
for 2018.
So the policy was always going to be goneburger by the time
2018 came around. Plus, reading the lines in this interesting quote
from Sepp Blatter:
"The rotation principle has served its purpose and has enabled
us to award our most prestigious competition to Africa for the
first time and, depending on tomorrow's decision, to South America
for the first time in many years," commented Blatter.
Anyway, there are at least six associations thinking of
bidding for 2018 now that it doesn't have to be in the Americas.
England, China, Australia, Mexico, the US, and a joint
Blegium/Netherlands/Luxembourg have made noises about hosting it.
The final decision will be made in 2011. Any early predictions?
Where would you want the 2018 World Cup to be held?

It seems to me that the whole move was engineered so that England
can be the hosts. I'd want it to be in Australia though.
