So who we got next year ? Is it Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Ghana and anyone else ? South Africa of course.
Always quite like the African teams, hopefully at least one of them can do well.

Cameroon and Egypt/Algeria will also be there.
Actually was just thinking about this in the shower (I know, I'm a sad man). With the World Cup being held in Africa for the first time, what are the chances that we could see a first ever African world champion?

Personally, think Ivory Coast is the best African team at the moment.
Anyone think they could go all the way?

Always loved Nigeria, mainly because of the likes of Okacha, Yakubu, Kanu etc.
Also quite like Egypt so hope they make it.

I really rate Ivory Coast (their 3-2 loss last world cup to Serbia and Montenegro was a great but heartbreaking match) but I don't think they're good enough to win it. When Egypt play good football I consider them to be not far behind the coast. Hopefully they'll pull off a win against Algeria.
To answer your earlier question I don't think an African side can win this world cup and I don't think they will any time in the foreseeable future.

Ghana have no strikers which is their problem, Cameroon had a very poor early qualification but are looking pretty good now, Ivory Coast will be good.
This might sound a bit generalist but none of them hav a great goal keeper (african teams don't seem to produce them) and that tends to be key to winning tournaments
There always seems to be an element of amateurish behaviour with both the players and backroom staff which doesn't help

i to feel that ivory coast are the strongest african nation. the toure brothers, kalou and drogba are some pretty handy players to have scattered throughout the park.
the african cup of nations will give us a good indicator of whos is playing well heading into the WC

Ivory Coast won the game against SCG 3-2 in 2006. The really heartbreaking game for them in that tournament was the game against Argentina, where they played the Argies off the park but couldn't finish a cheese sandwich and ended up losing 2-1.

Kameni from Cameroon is pretty good, but other than that I'd largely agree with you.
But I think with the Cup being in Africa, it seems almost inevitable to me that an African side will end up having a great run. I was just wondering whether that great run could mean actually winning it all, especially since in my eyes Ivory Coast has a squad that can rival most at the Cup (barring the very best ones like Spain).

Algeria have just beaten Egypt 1-0 in the play-off, qualifying for their first World Cup since 1986.
African line-up at the WC: South Africa, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Cameroon and Algeria.

Did they? My memory is ailing in my old age.
So disappointed that Egypt lost. Hopefully Algeria will be a surprise package, though.

Not taking anything away from Algeria but I was expecting Egypt to win this one. If they had qualified that would probably have been the strongest set of African teams. Egypt have won the last two African cup of nations. Currently Ivory Coast and Germany are 1-1 in a friendly.

Ivory Coast up 2-1 now. Good goal by the guy who plays in Switzerland. This guy:

They have really dominated the second half. Controlling the pace of the game with the ability to lift the tempo.

With 30sec left Podolski grabs the equaliser. Yaya Toure has been immense.

I don't think it's outlandish to say an African team could win this World Cup - I might have a sneaky bet. The African teams have done better over recent years. When you get into the knockout stages anything can happen. They could beat anyone there on the day. And the best team there often doesn't win the World Cup. Colvinator2009-11-20 21:25:07

I would think that the Coast would get further. Having said that it will largely come down to the groups so I await 6am December 5th with keen anticipation.

Can see Nigeria doing pretty well in South Africa.
Cote D'Ivoire had potential but have the hardest draw by far. Brazil will win that group, and Portugal are well crap as of late so think Drogba et al will qualify second where they will be meeting Spain
very unlucky for them

If it was the Cape Verde Islands then yes, could see them beating Portugal for second place, but poor form of late doesn't mean much come World Cup time. I still think Ivory Coast will get third, but I'd love them to win the group.
