Impressive briefing from Hudson...he has identified the problems and seems to have put forward a viable plan. I hope he does well. The reality is that the senior game reached just about rock bottom a year or so ago.....anything that Hudson does will make it better.

I particularly like getting all the age groups and AW's having the same over view of how he wants the game played.

That video gave me a rager.

Also it's crazy to hear just how unprofessional NZF have been - no code of conduct? WTF?

Seems like even if he doesn't get us results as a coach we are going to have benefits from his outside perspective and willingness to shake things up.

Martin Devlin on Radio Sport this morning claimed that Hudson went into great detail about how it was such a hard decision to tell Neil Emblen that he was not wanted.

So hard that Hudson didn't bother to meet in person with Emblen to explain, only phoned him the night before he announced the All Whites squad.

If this is true it is very disappointing.

can't remember which article i read but it mentioned hudson coming down to wellington to talk to moss and durante and then emblen.  i remember thinking, 'what is emblen doing in wellington' and wondered if he was here for the phoenix reserves job.

The biggest single thing that I took away from that 30 min watch is that there was no culture and it looks like there never has been. As he kinda illustrated and reading between the lines

- no code of conduct

- players setting tactics

- players and staff too close

- no accountability of performance

- no repercussions from performance

In other words, the tail was well and truly wagging the dog and either the dog was not too fussed by it or completely dumb to the fact in changing it.

Those kind of things above you would expect at a minimum to be instilled and I guess while I knew the set up was kinda marginal under Ricki in some respects (and look at the Nelsen stories that came out of WC2010), I did not think it was to this degree. Granted it could be a case of having higher standards but I like that this guy has set out a bloody clear plan, is not scared to make the big calls and is getting on with it whether you are with him or not.

To be honest, if you had told me Edge and Sail would have had a sniff (Edge particularly) I would have laughed at you and even more so if you had said that James would not be there after the last performance but for some reason, I am not alarmed by this. He has stated exactly why he is doing this and the reasons and I can say 'yup, seems legit'. In a lot of respects, he knows the bulk of his starters and I suspect they do too (Moss, Reid, Smith, Wood, Kosta, Thomas, Marco, McGlinchey) but then he does not know the rest or the next tier down and especially the next tier for the future and whom is pushing those starters.

The players are not always going to execute and I can accept that, but then I somehow think that will be more from a technically deficiency/experience aspect rather than coaching.

I think Hudson knows what he has on his plate now and is off to fix it. I for one, am onboard and if its not successful, I can appreciate that at the end of his reign, the team will be in a much better shape for the next man. I thought Hudson had inherited a decent team but listening to him, sounds more like just a bunch of players that happened to wear the same colour shirt.

Devlins local is Western Springs so there could be fire to this smoke. I somehow don't think thats his style OR he doesn't rate Emblen at all and basically discarded him quickly.

You have to sit back and wonder now if you were Emblen, how much has not getting his tickets really cost him.

Compare Emblen's "they know where to find me" attitude to applying for the AWs job with what we just saw from Hudson yesterday.

Emblen seems like a nice guy but I don't feel sorry for him.

Hope he was watching that presentation and taking notes on what should expected from an AWs coach in terms of professionalism.

What was Devlin expecting?  When people get fired/made redundant etc...a phone call is enough.  And Devlin doesn't  like Hudson's "spin" too...personally I like Hudson's "football nerd" approach...think Devlin's way off track regarding Hudson.

Is it just me or do others think that Devlin is just a light-weight in terms of sports journalism? Sure, has a big ausience because of where he works and he is reasonably amusing but I don't expect [or receive] any in-depth sports analysis, he's more an entertainer.

A lot of people didn't believe that Ricki did not take control of the team especially in 2010........ Laughable looking back at you all now. Ricki's days sound like an over 45's social footy team. Everyone best mates and no one gives a shit. This extended right through NZF as well. Surely De Jong has to go.

De Jong looked very guilty when Hudson started talking about youth teams, wondering how to tell him later that by the way buddy, those guys will be paying me some coin for the privilege of representing our country, then looked like he was going to die, when Andy started talking about contact hours and games. De Jong out of all of them, Ricki, Frank etc appears to me as the one who has been playing the mates game the hardest and has created this perfect storm. I am frankly amazed he is the last man standing. He should do the honorable thing and fall on his sword. He is the epitime of what I would call a beauracrat waiting for the FIFA promotion, brand new spanking fax machine and salary to match. He needs to go and go fast.

I'm taking that 45s bit a bit to heart.

The 45s team i'm in have a lot more going for it with out the Ricki art of training and playing style, oh we do give a shit when we lose even to a team stacked with 30 year olds but still enjoy ourselves afterwards., Thank you.

A word of caution: the same happened in '05 when Ricki took over.

There was a culture of greed when Ricki stepped up, no pride in the shirt either.

I want Hudson to do well because I want the All Whites to succeed. I would love to re live 14 November 2009 the greatest night in NZ Sport in my biased opinion.

However, Hudson made such a big deal by polishing Emblen's balls and going on about how hard it was to let him go. Given this, it is only reasonable that he should treat Emblen with dignity and inform him in person.

Martin Devlin is only the messenger and is just doing his job by pointing this out.

I think he's pissed off that Emblem was (alegedly) fired by phone, and thinking that is not an ethical way to approach things.

Hey, at least it wasn't by fax (he would still have a job).

Can someone remind me again what De Jongs job is? and whats his role in the future set up?  Because it looks like Hudson has covered all the bases.

I think Fred "the water boy" De Jongs days are numbered. Perhaps they could take his salary and redistribute it to all the boys who paid to play for NZ.

100% behind Hudson in his overview and plan for the future. I assume that Martin has crunched all the numbers and that the $$$ are all budgeted for Hudson's program.....because all this new contact time and more AW games won't be cheap

This. Now Rob Sherman is back in too it's only a matter of time. Fred should have well and truly taken care of this, instead he had us playing Chivas Ressies. I hope when he finally is jettisoned that they reverse the fee for the kids.

I actually do wonder what he has been doing all this time. I know he did a de facto CEO role for a while but it's amazing now the class of 82 are pretty much gone, we are getting some honesty and getting on with it

yeah but Ricki stayed longer than he should have. Looking back now, it's seriously amazing he survived the Honiara shit. There is talk that WC2010 papered over cracks as FDJ said (and I know Term, JD and I kinda talked about it as well as the financial hole we were staring at) but that lead up into Mexico was such a fucking shambles, it's hard to see how some of us defended it. Hudson is here for 4 years so there is no danger of him staying longer than he should. The thing with Waite is that he picked his favourites and then when Ricki got the gig, you saw that 2010 team take shape cause he cleared shit out.

I'm sorry but I cannot believe that you do not have a personal axe to grind because this really is such a minor issue compared to the disaster that is our sport.
