[/quote]I know. But as it stands, New Zealanders emigrating to Australia have no pathway to Australian residence, and consequently no pathway to citizenship. That might change in the future, of course. And you can always apply for residence under the regular immigration categories but the vast majority of kiwis in Aussie wouldn't be eligible for it.

How long has this been the case? 
I was born in wellington and moved with my family to Sydney when i was 6. As far as I could/ can tell we had no trouble getting residency, and by the time i was 11 I was a citizen of both countries...

Since 2001. If you shifted to Aussie before then you're fine. Or if you applied under another visa category after then rather than just turning up on a kiwi passport.
