Hudson to lead All Whites

Tuesday 5 August, 2014

Embargoed until Tuesday 5 August, 11am (NZ time)

New Zealand Football announced on Tuesday the appointment of Anthony Hudson to the position of All Whites coach.

The 33-year-old Hudson takes up the role after guiding Bahrain at both senior and U-23 level in recent years having also previously worked as manager at Football League side Newport County FC and as Tottenham Hotspur FC reserves coach.

In 12 matches with the Bahrain senior men’s side since August 2013, Hudson has guided the Persian Gulf nation to four wins and five draws while also sealing qualification to the 2015 Asian Cup tournament in Australia.

New Zealand Football CEO Andy Martin said Hudson, who is signed through until the end of the 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign, shone out from over 100 applicants for the role.

“We have a clear vision for the All Whites moving towards the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and we believe Anthony is the candidate best suited to the task of bringing that vision to life,” Martin said.

“He is driven and has achieved a lot in coaching terms at a relatively young age and, given the make-up of our side, we believe he is an excellent fit for our environment.”

Hudson, the 16th coach of the New Zealand national men’s side, said he can’t wait to get started working with the All Whites as the journey towards Russia begins.

“I’m excited to be joining New Zealand Football as the next coach of the All Whites,” Hudson said.

“With the playing group energised by some exciting young talent in recent times, the All Whites role is an attractive one and I intend to build a programme for New Zealand’s top players which gives them the chance to show the world what they can do.

“It’s an exciting prospect for everyone involved and I’m looking forward to the challenges ahead in what is the next chapter of a developing football story in New Zealand.”

After resigning from his position with Bahrain last week, Hudson has relocated to New Zealand for the fulltime role which also includes responsibilities in overseeing the programme of the country’s age-group representative sides.

The first test for Hudson and the All Whites team will come in September’s away clash with Uzbekistan.

The squad for the match in Tashkent will be named later this week with 2014 interim All Whites coach Neil Emblen selecting the side and making the trip as the assistant coach of the team.

Anthony Hudson

Age: 33
Qualifications: UEFA Pro License, UEFA ‘A’ License

2013 – Bahrain senior national team coach
2012-2013: Bahrain U-23/Olympic Games national team coach
2011: Newport Country FC manager (Football League, UK)

Not sure how I feel about this, time will tell I guess. His biggest achievement so far is getting Bahrain to the Asian Cup - but you would expect any given AWs side to qualify for that if they were in Asia. Frankly if you're an Asia country who misses out then you're shite. I'm on the fence. But I think the biggest thing is his age - there are plenty older coaches out there with more experience who could do far worse Im sure. We'll see. Prove me wrong Mr. Hudson.

Jason Pine said on the radio that apparently Emblen was going to be coaching the Phoenix reserves as part of his assistants gig?

Interesting that he said he wants to visit each player in their own environment. Is that in the budget?

Of course he 'wants' to. Being 'allowed' to is a different story.

Comes across as a bit of a knob in his press conference.

"I am an incredibly ambitious person...and I think myself and the All Whites' ambitions complement each other."

Hmmm.

There is a bit of bullshit in there

That's the bullshit he has to give.

Whether or not we like Hudson he probably was the best person to apply for the job. If he's shit it's probably because we are shit and can't get anyone better. I just hope he is given good support and is able to utilise our young talent coming through.

No I get that he has to, trust me but at least make some of it a little believable. For all the loads of hours of DVDs loaded on his computer that he has watched, I doubt he would be able to name anyone outside of Winston Reid...

I've been an endorser from the first time his name got dropped but just be straight. In one part he did say that it was the return to the WC that was appealing. Great. Awesome, now we know what you are about. Its great to have ambition and be ambitious and he certainly has that but never bullshit along the way cause then you just get labelled as a pork pie floater.

The assembled press corps are pretty weak too.

"I've been following the All Whites since the World Cup."

There are a half dozen good potential follow up questions to that statement. None of them got asked.

"I'm excited about the players." Which ones, and why?

Good on Gourdie for trying to get a straight answer on the "who approached who" question. He wasn't successful but at least he tried.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

What do you mean we couldn't get any one better!?! We had frank the tank and gary van 'I still look like a startled 13yr old' egmont waiting in the wings and I mean they are both fine coaches in there own right. between them they must have won 10 games!

*hint of sarcasm

I've been following England in WC for 40 years--- has not helped.

However, he has to be given a chance to prove himself and bagging him now is just not çricket'

Most of those were in the West Asia Championship. Looks like they used a few fringe players for that.

I agree in that sentiment but if you want to win people over, throw them a bone. As Smithy said which players is he impressed with? If he had at least pulled 4 or 5 names out, that might have helped. There is just nothing there to suggest he did the level of research that he bangs on about doing as he always does.

I hope he does really well and the proof is in the results and not on press conferences. A mate has just texted me and mentioned that he has certainly had a hell of a lot of media coaching. The problem is that the NZ public are very much used to that with every rugby game that gets telecast and the cliche bingo played.

Impressive levels of angst in here already. I feel he would of at least wiki'd the last team list by now and done some prelim research. I am sure he could name some players... I read someone he applied for the nix job a while back too.

Average appointment, average managerial CV. That's about it.

Three for me, and two for them.

The quotes are all the same lines that get used in English football when a new manager is hired. It's like hearing the same lines on Fifa after playing it a bit too much. But if we learned anything from Ricki, what's said in the media is viewed as feeding the vulchers. Just give them a quote or two for their story - in the end none of it matters that much as long as you're getting the right kind of message to the fans. Insert cliche here.
