Not sure which forum to put this in but Argentina, oh dear.  Now 5th in their table after a 1-0 loss in Paraguay.  The hand of God will be the hand of hiding if they fail to qualify. Lonegunmen2009-09-10 20:11:50

I'm a big fan of Argentina, but they have really gone downhill since Maradonna became their coach. If they fail to qualify it will put yet another blemish on his already mixed record.

It would really cut a line under his coaching... Or have I snorted metaphors?

So wha do they need to do to qualify?  Apart from win a lot (and hope others lose?)?

yeah how come brazil and paraguay have already qualified if theres still two games to go,  and paraguay is only ahead of chile by 3points? can't get my head around it? am I missing something.

paraguay can be beaten to 2nd spot but they can no longer finish outside the top four... hence they are qualified. chile could, mathematically, finish outside the 4 so they aren't through just yet.

None of these teams are in as much trouble as it may appear - Portugal's perhaps in the trickiest situation, since there is a scenario in which they miss out on being in the top 2, but that group's still far from resolved. France can still win their group, and at the worst will be in the playoffs, ditto for Russia (in fact winning the group should be even easier for Russia, they'll win it if they beat Germany at home). Both will probably be seeded in the playoffs if they end up there, so should get very winnable ties. Expect to see both at the World Cup.

Argentina have their next game against Peru at home (bottom placed CONMEBOL team), and 3 points there would ease pressure on them a bit. If they win there and avoid defeat in Uruguay I think they'll be guaranteed at the very least the 5th spot (the playoff spot), but would actually probably see them in the top 4.el grapadura2009-09-11 09:17:36

UEFA don't usually seed the playoff matches and have only done so once - but that was for the last World Cup so you could argue is the more likely approach. UEFA have given no indication of seeding, but they decided last minute last time so could easily do so again. Last time they used the FIFA rankings to split them into two pots.

Unfortunately for those of us who'd rather see Portugal fall, I think their remaining fixtures are relatively easy and they'll make the playoffs too.

Yeah, when I looked at the remaining games and counted up the "easy to guess" results, I couldn't see Argentina finishing 6th. They'd have to be favourites to beat the 4th CONCACAF team.

Yep, it's true that UEFA had a seeded draw for the World Cup playoffs for the last World Cup for the first time, but the rumours I'm hearing is that they'll use the same formula this time around. This may be officially confirmed as soon as 3/4 October.

That's a shame. I liked the unseeded draw and always though the justification - that by virtue of finishing in the same place in their qualifying groups they are effectively seeded the same - was fair.

Still, FIFA are looking to make their rankings more active, using them for part of the Finals seeding algorithm over the last few tournaments.

What do you base that on? Your own stupidity would be my guess, but go on enlighten us.

If you had bothered to check the draw you will see that Argentina will easily qualify.

In case you didn't see the confirmation already, you called it correctly:

"We have decided on seeding the teams into two groups of four, taking the FIFA world rankings into account, with the top four in one pot and the others in another pot."

"There will be a separate draw to decide home and away."

Yep, I did see the confirmation but forgot to post it.

It's good news for Croatia (provided we can actually hold on to the second spot, but that's a different story), but I agree that from a competition point of view, it's fairer to have an open draw.

Also, another rumour has reached me regarding the draw for the final tournament. Apparently FIFA are considering scrapping the usual criteria for seeds in Pot 1 (Pot 1 is top seeds, Pots 2-4 based on geographical location of teams). The recent criteria has been hosts, defending champions and 6 teams with the best coefficient points from the last 3 tournaments and qualifying campaigns. Now FIFA is contemplating to changing it to hosts and top 7 teams ranked on the FIFA table that qualify for the final tournament (and not including the hosts).

At this stage this is only a proposal, and final decision will be made after the qualifying is completed.

Do you mean defending champs and top 7?

No, hosts and and top 7 (defending champions would be pretty much guaranteed to be in the top 7 if they qualified).

last gasp goal from Palermo after Peru had equalised in the 45th min of 2nd half. Chile now though for first time since 98. Uruguay and Argentina to play each other for the 4th automatic and 5th playoff space on thursday morning.

Botafogo - Rio de Janeiro and Wellington Phoenix, my two teams til death do us part.

For now. They have Uruguay away, with the last qualification spot available for the winner. Even so, unless a Uruguay home win is combined with Ecuador winning away at Chile, Argentina will stay alive. And they'd be favourites against either Honduras (likely) or Costa Rica (possible).

FIFA will use the new seedings that come out on 16 October, but currently the 8 teams to make the UEFA second-placed playoff are:
Russia (1129), France (1040), Greece (971) and Portugal (880) seeded against Ukraine (829), Ireland (743), Bosnia-Herzegovina (682), Slovenia (576).

I doubt we'll see Ukraine catch Portugal in the rankings, given both have won their October matches.

I wonder if the red card suspensions will hurt Uruguay's chances when they face Costa Rica or Honduras in the playoffs next month.

Maradona is a t**ser! He'snot a coaches a-hole!

Argentina have some of the best players on the planet. He used 78 players in the campaign and they lost 4 games. He should be sacked for the WC. Mind you if he did go it would provide lots of entertainment.
