in todays Sydney Morning Herald

"Australia's chances of hosting the world's biggest sporting event will also be relying on Sydney's Fan Fest celebrations during this World Cup

Eyes will be on Sydney when it hosts one of the six official FIFA World Cup Fan Fest sites outside South Africa during June and July.

The state government and Football Federation Australia said that if the Fan Fest was embraced and trouble-free, it would improve Australia's hopes of getting the 2018 or 2022 World Cup.

Featuring big screens and live entertainment, the Fan Fest in Darling Harbour will have a capacity of 20,000 and is believed to cost about $7 million."  full article

I would think the thought of a World Cup being held right next door in 2018 or 2022 would have you all right behind their bid. lol there would be a mass emigration frm NZ for 1-2 months

according to Wiki

Eleven bids were submitted in March 2009 covering thirteen nations, with two joint bids: Belgium-Netherlands and Portugal-Spain. Mexico also submitted a bid, but withdrew theirs on 28 September 2009, while Indonesia had their bid rejected for lack of government support on 19 March 2010. Three of the remaining nine bids, South Korea, Qatar, and Japan are only for the 2022 World Cup, while all the others are bidding for both the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. Four bids come from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), four from Europe's UEFA, and one from North America's CONCACAF. It had also been reported on the FIFA website that Egypt was entering a bid, but the president of the Egyptian Football Association denied that any more than an inquiry in principle had been made
