It'll be great if they can field a fully fit team with players that were injured before or during the WC - Kruse, Franjic, Milligan, Sainsbury etc. A decent showing will get people wondering what might have been, and help build interest/support for the upcoming Asia Cup.

Alternatively, losses in any of their following friendlies (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar) might do the opposite. Aussies won't be as understanding as they were when the team went down to Chile, Holland and Spain.

In the event that the camp does start on the 27th and if that means we lose Burns for the WSW game ont he 28th, they would lose Spiranovic and Juric, and on balance that might not be too bad for us.

Especially if Topor-Stanley is also suspended for his red card (which I think he is?)

This makes for interesting reading, basically sounds like the West Asia teams are upset because they were already completing against South Korea and Japan for the spots and now Australia is taking it off them too.

The WC will become 40 nations by 2022 anyway, so they can hope to qualify by then. Theyre hosting it that year as well

The way the East are going at the moment they would be the loser. Rather than 5 spots to aim for (have gotten 7/8 for last two WCs), that scenario would see probably only 3 to aim for. 2.5 spots each for East (+ Oceania) and West, rather than the 4.5 now. Unlikely that we would finish in the top 3 in the East ever.

...and who would back it?  The West would support it but no one in the east would and no one with power in Oceania would.  Too many people would have their own self-interest impacted so it will not happen.

One of 2 things are going to happen as a result of this:

1. The world cup will be 40 teams very soon.

2. Aussie end up back in Oceania.

Im predicting the first though.

Why? Australia were at the last world cup, as were South Korea....

How does that change anything. Asia does not have as strong a say in FIFA as people give them credit for.

A SHOCKED Asian football chief has savaged claims on the eve of the Asian Cup final that the Confederation wants to expel Australia.

“Stunned” Asian Football Confederation (AFC) president Sheikh Salman Bin Ibrahim al-Khalifa has bas backed Australia’s membership, and told the Herald Sun that alleged comments to the contrary were “manipulated”.

Sheikh Salman praised Australia for putting on a wonderful Asian Cup and said the focus should be on Saturday night’s final between Australia and South Korea, which will attract 80,000 fans and a global TV audience of 80 million.

I put a winky face next to my post for a reason - I was just jumping on the thing that always gets said when a topic like this is raised. I don't think an east/west spilt is viable or likely.

Friendly. Aussie leading Germany 2-1 after 60 mins. Reus opened for the Germans before Burns provided the cross for Troisi's headed goal. Jedinak scored a great free kick over the wall into top right corner. Burns just been subbed off for Tommy Oar.

Great to see our Nathan Burns so influential against Germany yesterday.

Burns a threat right from the outset.

You can watch a video of the whole game on demand for free here:

http://livefootballvideo.com/fullmatch/world/frien...

Scroll down to where it says "Full Match Video" and it's one video for each half.

Coverage from BT Sport via ESPN in the UK - English commentators Stewart Robson and Peter Drury.

It's great that the English commentators talk about "the great form he's been in with Wellington Phoenix in the A-League with 13 goals" etc.

Wellington Phoenix getting prominent mentions during Germany internationals now - good stuff !!!

This sort of exposure won't do Burns' career prospects any harm - but will the Nix be able to hold onto him next season?

I can't see many punters turning up to see those countries...

Easy wins should be availalble - but won't be good financially for the FFA.

Similar to the All Whites playing Pacific Island countries.

Jordan the pick of a weak bunch (FIFA ranking 103)

Tajikistan  = 143

Kyrgyzstan = 153

Bangladesh = 167
