We went mental in the Charles Dickens pub in downtown Melbourne. About 40 or 50 AWs fans in there.....

Fantastic result. Even 0-1 would not have shamed us.

sitting at a pub in Bali getting a bit frustrated, thinking that for once we weren't playing enough long ball. Then BOOM! W.W.Reid, you. f**king. god. I'm up going mental in front of a whole lot of ozzies and the locals, well done lads, top drawer draw!

Well even if Winston Reid did not get that goal. Rory Fallon was there also to receive the ball. Both Maori boys were onside. Who said Maoris can't play football?? They maybe the minority in Football but some of our best footballers in the country are Maoris.

Cheers above two posters, the more support the better!

What a game?  Man I was getting so frustrated and thought when Smeltz missed his header that we were doomed to miss out on any points.  So proud.  Heaps of little mistakes in today's game, far from our most convincing yet we still got a point.  That in itself is a good thing (provided we learn from it).

Paston was clearly very rattled after his failed clearance, poor chap, but he recovered fairly well.  I love Vicelich but personally I thought he was quite poor.  Christie wasn't bad.  Lochhead is a player I'm quick to criticize when he fails but today he was fairly good.  Once or twice had an issue keeping up while tracking back but other than that I was happy.   Smith, Reid, and Nelsen were great.  Getting so sick of Fallon's little fouls - so unnecessary but I love the guy and there were far less today than against Slovenia.

I may be very much wrong here, but there were three minutes of stoppage time signalled in which the Slovaks bought on a sub.  When you bring on a sub don't they extend stoppage time by about 30 seconds.  If that's right that brings me to my next point - was our goal in the last 30 seconds added by the stoppage time?  If so lol at Slovakia.

Also that yellow card for removing shirts - I'd heard years back that that was introduced as some Muslim groups found it offensive.  I've no idea if that's true or not, anyone know?

Loved the contrasting reactions of the two coaches.  Ricki over the moon while what's his face sulking with his drink bottle.

Was at the Grail and there were a few hundred people there and it absolutely erupted.  May try the Bard for the Italy game.  Can't wait!

they introduced this for commercial reasons...because some players had a shirt under the jersey with not official sponsors...then they justified this stupid prohibition with the fact that they want to respect all countries and religions...because, for example, Kak always wears a shirt with the script "i believe in jesus"...

its to stop political slogans and as said above non official sponsorship being used basicaly. its nothing to do with muslims finding it offensive, that is just ridiculous.

Was in a pub in Manly then one guy came over asking if I was from NZ then after a while we had about 4 NZ'ers and then all my Aussie friends came and were giving us sh*t until that goal went in... I was going nuts in the Steyn... Everyone was loving it!!!

Well done lads great result. As people have noted above not our best performance and I was getting a bit wound up during the game with Elliot and Vicelich being non-existent - I was hoping Ricki would wake up and put McGlichey in for Vicelich during the 2nd half and also do something Lochead's constant ball watching while defending.

Plenty to work on and Paston gives us the sh*ts everytime he goes near the ball but happy days -bloody brilliant for the lads and NZ sport.

A good side will getr something out of a game when they don't deserve to, ergo we are a good side. Guts, steel, and a never say die attitude, fantastic stuff.
I'd hope that the centre of midfield gets looked at though, as the Italians might not be quite so lenient on the aging limbs of both Elliott and Vicelich. Elliott has to stay but, like a few on here, I'm calling for McGlinchey to get a start.
Anyway, great result, and unlike most of you who partied it up I enjoyed the moment alone in my lounge with my cat while my wife and little boy slept soundly, even though I brought the house down when Winston scored (dreadful defending by the Slovaks, BTW).
Nix, Leyton Orient and Alloa Athletic supporting schmuck.

Ridiculous. They've had that rule in Serie A for at least ten years (I believe the term is festaggiamento essessivo, excessive celebration), and Italians don't give a crap how Muslims feel. As someone else said, it was mainly because people were wearing political or "rogue sponsor" T-shirts underneath - I remember that one fellow who played Italy U21s, took of his shirt after a goal to reveal a Ch Guevara T-Shirt (being a commie from Livorno), never played for Italy again.

FIFA has no problem with my NZ vs. Bahrain highlights on Youtube but apparently the World Cup games are now "Copyrighted Material" and blocked upon upload. Guess I'll have to use my website instead. Full highlights coming soon, for now enjoy the end of the game

Love the point above that if Slovakia hadn't introduced that substitute during injury time, the ref could well have blown up before we scored!

Does anyone know if it's possible to get this commentary in NZ? I'm sick to death of the rubbish NZ two we get.

Edit: Actually not that keen on the commentary in the video, a yank is probably worse than the kiwi guys. TopLeft072010-06-16 09:16:31

I watched it on TV1 as soon as I heard the SKY commentators were Dewhurst and De Jong. The English guy doing the commentary on TV1 is pretty good.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

John Helm.  I remember having a chat with him when he was doing the U17 wimmins here,  You could get him on Sky if you chose the alternate language setting.

Yep - he knew his stuff about the players (or had good notes). Although he was confused between Killen and Fallon early on.

I thought his voice was familiar (not surprsing since he is everywhere for football) and then when he started talking about the U17 W's WC I twigged.

Me too! I'm surprised I didn't wake the whole house up doing laps of the coffee table and doing fist pumps! Loved it when they put the camera on the Slovak coach and then panned over their bench. I literally did LOL.

I agree completely with you Vicelich has got to go. I don't think we'll see him on the park again. Brown will start with Elliott with wee Mac or Plodder next cab off the rank.
