TEAM NEWS
Ivory Coast captain Didier Drogba will return to the starting line-up following his return from an arm injury and will take the place of Aruna Dindane. Drogba came off the bench against Portugal just 11 days after breaking a bone in his arm.
Brazil will name the same team that beat North Korea in their opening match. Goalkeeper Julio Cesar is set to win his 50th cap.
One booking from suspension: Ramires (Brazil) & Ronaldo (Portugal).
MATCH PREVIEW
The trouble with managing Brazil is that merely winning matches is not good enough, its how you win them that matters. The Brazilian press require no encouragement to crank up their feud with Dunga and they were quick to lambast his side's lacklustre performance in beating North Korea in their opening match. Pre-World Cup predictions that the Selecao are lacking the players with the flair and invention to break down teams seemed to ring true at Ellis Park.
One of Dunga's biggest worries continue to centre on the form of Kaka. He flitted around for 77 minutes against the Koreans, but looked a shadow of the player that won the 2007 World Footballer of the Year award. Fortunately Robinho impressed and the seven chances he created was the most by any player in the opening round of matches.
As for the Ivory Coast, they are ready to unleash their Drog of War. Their captain, Didier Drogba, starts the match as his miraculous recovery from a broken arm continues. They were neat and tidy against Portugal and their defence, that has kept eight clean sheets in their last 16 matches, had few problems shackling Cristiano Ronaldo.
The players have praised the impact coach, Sven-Goran Eriksson, has had on the organisation of the team: "We are so happy to get Eriksson as our manager because now when we play we are more solid and more compact," said Emmanuel Eboue.
MATCH STATS
Head-to-head

- Overall, this is the sides' 28th meeting and Germany lead by 16 wins to seven. The last time Germany lost this fixture was in May 1973.

That's a bit cruel, I would like to see Portugal go through. But Brazil should be too strong, they have plenty of players who can step up should Kaka not turn up tomorrow morn, I think he is still another game away from making a genuine impact. Robinho is in some rich from and if Luis Fabiano can score one he will start to put more away. Failing that Nilmar as a sub is a good opton for Dunga.
Botafogo - Rio de Janeiro and Wellington Phoenix, my two teams til death do us part.

Yep. Ive been ridiculed by many when I wrote off Ivory Coast saying that they wouldnt get out of their group.
Lets be honest here, most of the hype has been around Drogba (despite many others saying that it hasnt), and Ive always said one man wont win the World Cup, to which i have been constantly reminded by all that theyve got other big name players like Toure and Kalou... etc, but as soon as there were talks about Drogba possibly missing out through injury, everyone finally started doubting their chances...
If Drogba was never there, there would never have been such high expectations to start with.
Oh yeah, Shaka Hislop even said they would go all the way. I lol'd.

What an absolute f**king disgrace from the Ivory Coast, and the referee. I feel much better about our game now because that dive was the pinnacle of disgusting.
same as the rest though, the reality is now that you can't put yourself into a position where the player can simulate like that. silly from kaka (horrible dive none the less). sad but true

Disgraceful.... Ref and Player should be crucified by FIFA. They need to get rid of this sh*t out of the game...

worst game for diving by far imo

Kaka was approached, to which he nudged the player away with his arm. Then he falls down holding his face, when the contact was made to the chest?
What are these refs actually seeing? There was no way I would give that as a ref. If anything Id give the other guy a yellow for being a total douche.

I understand what youre saying TopLeft about avoiding these situations, but a world cup standard ref needs to be able to figure these out properly.
yeah i agree with you also. the hardest part (or at least the most important) of reffing now is deciding between foul and simulation. the latter being the more common offence in this game in particular and increasingly more common across the game period. it's ugly and FIFA need to address it asap because i believe it is the most important issue they are currently faced with.

Hmm i actually agree with the decision. He didnt give him a red...it was just a yellow. And he DID give him a stupid elbow. The player did absolutely dive etc,but the ref gave it right...If he really bought into the dive he'd have given a straight red.
Very stupid thing to do after having just been booked a minute earlier for shoving a guy. Shouldve book the Ivory coast player for overeaction too.
But boy did that game turn embarrasing. Dives and play acting all over the show

Nah i 100% disagree. He just fended the player away, something which you would do waiting for a corner, or a free kick.
The deciding factor here was the lollipop dive.

Fifa will see the incident and ban the Ivory coast player for a couple of games like they did with Rivaldo in 2002.

? well lets see this ratchet up considerably. they want to come down like a ton of bricks on cheating players and their managers who instruct / facilitate this.

Yeah agree, Kaka elbowed the guy - automatic yellow. I thought Kaka's first yellow was the harsh one.
However, the elbow was retaliation, which doesn't mean Kaka is let off obviously. It looked like the Ivory Coast player deliberately ran into Kaka in the first place.
The ref was elsewhere wasn't he, dealing with the foul before then? The linesman was on dealing with the melee. Did I misunderstand what we were being replayed - the Kaka incident that lead to a yellow took place during that melee?

You can't "fend" a player away with your elbow. That will get a yellow while waiting for a corner etc.
The deciding factor on how the Ivory Coast player is disciplined is the dive, but that is an entirely separate issue from Kaka's retaliation.

I have a question. When that great handball player Lusi Fabiano uses his skill set to score an important World Cup goal, it gets mentioned in passing at best, and when Thierry Henry does the same, it's the worst thing done by a human being in the history of the universe ever. Why is that?

It seems like a lot of you are complaining about the Ivory Coast. They were far from perfect and committed more fouls than you can poke a stick at but Brazil were absolutely terrible. Some very cynical play. Kaka had to go, he was being an arrogant little prat for a large part of that half and he deserved that yellow card. He can shake his head all he likes and act as if the ref doesn't really know what he's doing but I hope he's ashamed of himself. The way the Brazilians surrounded the ref was pretty bad as well, throwing their arms around and not being far from punching him. Wasn't too far off Joao Pinto's reaction to his red card against South Korea in '02, just the ref didn't get hit.
Also, Fabiano handling the ball was just bad. I saw it without the replay so surely the ref could have spotted one of them. Was very bad when we saw a replay, after awarding the goal, of the ref asking Fabiano if he touched it and him putting his arms up in an innocent way and denying it.
The sight of Dunga having a cry as the Brazilian players got fouled was also painful to watch. Some of the Brazilians dished out some bad tackles as well, and he knew, I'm sure, how many of the supposedly awful fouls on his players were made to look worse than they were.
Elano was one of a very few Brazilian players who can be proud of his performance.
On another more positive note, despite two victories, Brazil don't look like they can win this tournament.
