On FM22 Calvin Harris always ends up playing for NZ... does he meet resident requirements??

FIFA's rule is 5 years residency over the age of 18, so no. You can apply for an exemption but I don't think they will give it for a kid that moved to NZ at 14 for a football scholarship & left when he was 18/19 (not sure he has even done the 5 years tbh)

There was a change to the eligibility rules in 2020, to sort out the kids moving to new countries. If you move to a new country before the age of 10 you only need to have lived there 3 years to get eligibility, and after the age of 10 you need 5 years residency.

It helps fix situations like Deklan Wynne’s back in the day when he wasn’t NZ eligible despite slicing here most of his life. I don’t know if Harris is eligible though, he probably isn’t, otherwise we would’ve heard some chat.

Born year 2000. Wiki says came to NZ at age 14 (from Hong Kong) in 2014, and left age 18 (2018). So based on the above he sadly left a year early.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calvin_Harris_(footballer)

If that rule came in before 2019, he might have considered staying, 1 extra year? Even as an 18 yr old he probably realised the chances of playing international football was far greater with NZ, than England or USA.

But being only 1 year short of the above criteria, could he & NZF apply for an exemption to FIFA?

A friendly against Liga MX team Guadalajara (Davila's old club?).

Harris has mostly been playing MLS Next Pro lately for Cincinnati's 2nd team.

English by birth -  Middlesborough, 2000.
Moved to HK at 10.
Came to us in 2014 until 2018. We didnt sign him to the senior team due to a lack of NZ passport.

Queenslander 3x a year.

Harris in his first match day squad for Colorado on the weekend. Unused sub in a 0-0 home draw with Sporting KC. Sometime Socceroo Alex Gersbach on the bench (also unused beside him).

Colorado started the season getting thumped 4-0 at Seattle. Gersbach started that game.

From Flying Kiwis. He's got some tatts I see.

I presume he could never qualify for the AWs? No good if he played for Auckland FC for 2 seasons or something, combined with his time at the Nix?
The time spent in NZ must be continous?

Will never be good enough for the US or England you'd think. Didn't play in the Asian Cup for Hong Kong.

Calvin Harris, the Hong Kong/England prospect who spent some time with the Wellington Phoenix Academy (though was limited by international transfer rules) scored for Colorado Rapids, albeit in a 4-1 loss against Portland Timbers. That’s his third goal in MLS, having played 43 times (although only 18 of those were starts). Four assists to his name also.

First half MLS double for 24 yr old Harris. Pity he never stayed in NZ long enough to qualify for the AWs.

3 goals in the MLS this season (5 in his total 3.5 season MLS career). Mostly still a bench player, but starting this game, as Colorado like all of the MLS clubs have players away on international duty.

Edit - Harris off at 75 mins (2-1) in a 4-1 win

Whilst he hasn't set the MLS alight, I really wish we pulled the trigger and signed him instead of Sheridan when Rudan was in charge.

With the much stronger emphasis on youth these days, I'd say with the same circumstances today, yes Harris would be signed and probably be given a 3 yr plus deal.

Rapids win their quarter final tie in the Leagues Cup over América from Liga X.
0-0 after NT, Colorado got up 9-8 in the pen shootout.

Harris on as a 57th min sub. Not a lot of trust put in him, in the pen shootout.
9th pen taker for the Rapids. Defenders got a go before him. He converted his pen and then the 10th taker the GK Steffen had the winning pen go in

4 MLS teams in the semis, helped by the whole comp being hosted in the States.
