Some very good players there. And some not so good.

seven players to cut yet. sometimes i wonder why they start off with 30 before picking a final 23. surely they already have a good idea who's made it. only thing i can thing of is 50/50 injured players

Yeah, it because that there are depth of players as well as players in near recovery of injuries, therefore having a final 23 cut off date near to the time is more dependent on form after a while. This squad obviously includes the 7 standby players to the 23 final players. I find it a fair approach as it keeps players on their toes until the submission date and gives the most chances for players to stake their claims.

However in cases like New Zealand, where we have all our best players fit and healthy we don't have the depth of players as well as players at different playing levels/leagues and only so much specialised position players in our small pool that it was far easier to make the decision. As it is, we will probably use about 16 of the 23 players in the three games with some regular use.

England has the most consist World Cup results. They always being at least quarter finalist. Hardly poor at all.

They would be "consistently in the knockouts stages but never progressing further to their own expectations."

England was in the quarters the last two times, but would hardly call them consistent quarter-finalists.

Also reached the semis only twice in their history. Hardly an enviable record considering the expectations attached to English World Cup performances since the WW2.

I dunno:Q/finals in '54,'62,'70,'82(the 2nd rd was essentially the old Q/final stage),'86,'02,'06:that seems to indicate they are in the mix,but fail to kick on.
As for the Dutch, their defence may be the weakness:they'll score a few goals, but leak a couple too, maybe at a crucial time.I like the way they play wingers and try to get at teams down the flanks.Good news having Van Persie back;he adds plenty to their team.

9 QF appearances (including 1966 and 1990) out of 15 tournaments held in the time.

Is that consistent? Dunno. But surely England ought to have won more than just 2 Quarterfinals.

OT:

Van Persie makes a huge difference to both Arsenal and Oranje. When he's fit for about 5 minutes every season. What odds he'll star in the group stages, and then break down on the eve of the knock-out rounds...

fair points. i just wonder if some managers/selectors have already chosen the 23 when they name the 30. but you're right, it will help keep the players on their toes.

Thought RVN will get his chance, at least in 30 men trials. Seems his move to Hamburg hasn't paid off as he wanted it to. Shame, have a big respect for this player.

interesting to read in Dom that Van Persie and 3 others (Robben etc) are talking themselves up as the best options as a unit up front

seems like history repeating in the Dutch camp

Yeah hoping like f**k he's ok. Seen the Netherlands killing it like this pre/early tournament before but go on to choke, hoping they have learned from that and step up to the big games.

lol we always learn from our mistakes, that's how we're able to replicate them so perfectly every 4 years!

Read lately Robben is desperate like hell to recover for WC games. See him playing in knock out stage of the tournament, Netherlands should be fine in group, even without him.

This cup is ours baby

keep our heads down, keep it tight at the back and we can dispose of ghana or uruguay

if we can hit the final it's a one-off chance, we've got the right temperament and attitude to ride out the big games, we can do this

RVP was sh*te again and even Robben was pretty poor compared to usual, he needs to be a bit smarter. Ooijer was shaky in the first half which is probably to be expected but he had an excellent second half. Sneijder, Kuyt, Van Bommel, Stekelenburg were all outstanding. Van Bronckhorst, Van der Wiel, had solid games.

Nederland com op!!! Wereld kampioen tweeduizend tien!!!!

Dutch had a great chance to score in the first half.  2 on 2 (plus goalie further back) and Robben had to turn onto his left foot.  I predicted it, the defender predicted it, and he was tackled.  Gone with his right and he could've at least got a shot off.

uruguay have had 120 sapping minutes plus a mentally draining penalty shootout

we've got a cupla key players out suspended but uruguay are atleast missing suarez

we can do this

if we can do it then thank f*ck we'd only have to play one out of spain, argentina and germany after that!
