A 30 man provisional squad was named but since Hahn, Goreztka, Meyer and Jansen have been dropped and Kramer been brought in. So the now 27 man provisional squad is:

Current squad

The following 27 players are part of the preliminary squad of 2014 FIFA World Cup.[132]

Caps and goals as of 14 May 2014.

MF Thomas Müller 13 September 1989 (age 24) 47 16  Bayern Munich
MF Sami Khedira 4 April 1987 (age 27) 44 4  Real Madrid

MF Mario Götze 3 June 1992 (age 21) 27 7  Bayern Munich
MF Marco Reus 31 May 1989 (age 24) 19 7  Borussia Dortmund

MF Matthias Ginter 19 January 1994 (age 20) 2 0  SC Freiburg
MF Christoph Kramer 19 February 1991 (age 23) 1 0  Borussia Mönchengladbach
FW Miroslav Klose 9 June 1978 (age 35) 131 68  Lazio
FW Kevin Volland 30 July 1992 (age 21) 1 0  1899 Hoffenheim

Interesting points re the squad:

  • Khedira being selected even though has only just returned from a serious knee injury
  • Kruse not being selected with Podolski there. I would have thought that Kruse's ability to play a variety of forward positions, recent good form (most of the rueckrunde he was below the form shown in the hinrunde but the last handful of games he has played well) and style of play would have seen him selected
  • Zieler picked ahead of either Leno/ter Stegen
  • Not many striker options, Loew preferring a possession based game could play attacking midfielders in a false nine (see Kiessling ruled out)
I would think these players could be nervous of their chances getting into the final 23: Draxler, Podolski (a Loew favourite), Mustafi, Hoewedes, Ginter (Ginter is actually a CD who can play in midfield) and depending on fitness Khedira. Supposedly in the past there has been tensions between the Dortmund and Bayern players with suggestions Khedira is there as buffer between the two sets of players (Grosskreutz, who is BVB through and through, has been suggested to be a problem but his versatility and decent form at RB should see him selected) while Podolski could be picked for the lols (read team spirit).
Possible line up in a 4231:

                        Neuer

Lahm Hummels Boateng  (Schmelzer/Durm)

(Schweinsteiger/Kroos) (Kroos/Khedira/Bender/Kramer)

(Mueller/Goetze/Volland) (Kroos/Goetze/Oezil/Reus) (Reus/Schuerrle/Draxler/Podolski/Volland) - so many options here, all good players and might just depend who Germany are playing

                        (Klose/Mueller/Volland)

So, Loew is not just selecting on pure ability and form but also taking into account team dynamics which could be important during a tournament. Germany have a good squad with lots of attacking ability. Recent defensive frailty will need to be sorted out. They have a tough group and though favourites an inspired Ronaldo could scare them. There is a lot of pressure on Loew to finally win a tournament after many near misses. My feeling is that Germany will do well to get the semi final stage again. Anything less would be seen as a disappointing but I think that Germany could be susceptible teams that counter and transition well. Also, hopefully Klose breaks the all time WC scoring record.

This German team is stacked, them and Spain will be the only real threat to the South American's.

I was surprised Podolski was picked, he's played well for Arsenal when he's played, but it wasn't frequent...his itnernational experioene is pretty solid though.

Don't discount Argentina. They have a fairly easy run.

Still a bit of injury cloud over the team: Schweinsteiger and Neuer are not training with the ball. Lahm is not training at all, but will be fine soon. Sami Khedira had a sensational recovery and expect to get into full form for the tournament.

Germany will win World Cup, according to FIFA game simulation

In time-honored tradition, the company today published a pre-tournament prediction, based on "the award-winning EA Sports football engine that drives FIFA" games. After running simulations of the 32-team tournament, the video game team most likely to win in real life is Germany.

Interesting Durm over Schmelzer (only because Schmelzer has been first choice at BVB) and only one recognised striker. Goetze and Mueller probably favs to play false nine with Klose offering something different. Hopefully Klose is able to pick up at least 2 goals.

Hopefully not too serious. They do have depth in his position but his form has been excellent during the 2nd half of the season and will be missed.

Reus out of the WC. Big loss to the tournament. Mustafi brought in. Not a straight swap, Loew must not have been happy original squad balance or defensive form of a player not up to scratch.

Klose broke the record by scoring in the 6-1 win vs. Armenia yesterday.
He's now zeroing in on the all-time World cup goal-scoring record:
  • 15 goals - Ronaldo (Brazil)
  • 14 goals - Gerd Muller, Miroslav Klose (Germany)
  • 13 goals- Just Fontaine (France)
  • 12 goals - Pele (Brazil)

Underlines how meaningless these records are: Klose would be the least talented player in that group. Good luck to him though.

Agree, all this stats are meaningless, but I would not say less talented, you need a certain talent to cap 130+ games for the one of the best national teams. Miroslav is still at top of his game, he is a great sportsman, great worker and general humble nice guy.
Klose announced that he will retire from football next year, shows his class, not doing some extra rounds in 'lower' leagues.

How is doing rounds in lower leagues a showing of inferior class?

Can equally argue that it just shows he loves the game less (yes I know this is a stupid argument)

Agree - Pele played  in the old North American Soccer League along with many other wonderful players like Cruyff, Eusebio, Bobby Moore, Gordon Banks, George Best, Beckenbauer, Carlos Alberto, Gerd Muller, Neeskens, Rensenbrink, Oscar.
All players with class...
Some famous English players played in NZ at the end of their careers like Trevor Brooking, Kevin Keegan, Paul Mariner, Mick Channon.
More recently, one of The Republic of Ireland's greatest football sons, Terry Phelan (World Cup 1994 , Man City, Chelsea, Everton, Wimbledon, Leeds) was player-coach for Otago United late in his playing career. Never lost my respect.
Winding up their careers in lower leagues never affected their class in my eyes.

Klose overtaking Ronaldo's record would make me sad.

Three for me, and two for them.

Exactly. I don't think playing on after your prime or not says anything about your level of 'class'. Though as someone who is constantly itching to play football, I have a fondness for old pros who just want to keep going because they love it so much and their body hasn't completely given out yet.

Would make me happy :)
I think we had this discussion last WC. He is not in Ronaldo's class, Klose would admit that, but he is a really smart player that works hard and has adapted and improved his game to still stay relevant (only player to score at least 4 goals in 3 WCs). He was a more limited player in 2002 than he is now. I do feel that he won't be first choice with Mueller/Goetze playing a 'false nine' in Germany's system.

Agree. Particularly if the alternative is picking up megabucks in the middle east or something.
