For a start, FIFA doesn't view continental championships in the same way as the World Cup (mainly because they don't all happen in the same year), so although a good performance will definitely earn brownie points, it alone won't equate to a title. Therefore club form will be very important too, and one guy who's really been doing well at his club and driving it forward has been Messi. If Barcelona win the Champions League or La Liga, or both, I'd say Messi would be the definite favourite. If they don't, the field will probably be more open.
