France World Cup thread

Now that we're finally through I can start this thread.

Allez les Bleus! Not many people will be giving France a shot, given their poor form over the past two or so years, but you never know what might happen in a World Cup.

Still buzzing after qualification!

Last World Cup I did a sweepstake in my class and everyone wrote France off. I predicted them to win the thing and was so gutted when they lost in the final. Almost pocketed something decent if I remember correctly.

yea rite them off at you peril

they seem to play their way through the tournament then all of a sudden they are in the final.

they may not play well but they get the job done and thats all that matters. look at the argies, they beat serbia 6-0 and look unstopable then go and get knocked out

wouldnt be surprised in france find themselves in the final 4 again

Mhmm, that's right. Last time they stuttered in the group stages and most thought Brazil would get them but they ended up in the final.

I can think of a lot of Irishmen that would like to give France a shot, especially Tierry Henry - right between the eyes.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

I guess Ireland's three shots on goal weren't enough? If you want to moan, feel free to do it in the other thread(s). This is about France at the World Cup.

Moan? That wasn't a moan and I'm not Irish. I was just stating an answer to your thread. You used the word "shot" in the first place.

But on your topic, despite that goal, France were lucky to be getting near qualifying. Whilst not writing them off, things will have to drastically change in the next few months if they are to progress. The French team is an aging one.

I agree with your assessment, lots of oldies in there. Mind you, they also have lots of talented youth. It just seems like none of them have really hit their straps yet.

Tigers is giving me moderating powers for this thread btw and I run a tight ship.

France is probably going to win it I'd say.

It's in their hands now.

Its the one of the things that in my eyes is a real blight on our  game. That FIFA dosnt have the balls to stand up to the antics of some of the so called superstars of our game.Such blatant acts as this should be receiving some sort of sanction and the continual wet bus ticket approach to diving and abuse of officals is ridiculous.

Must piss Mossy off even more when he gets slammed with a 4 game ban.

that is not accurate

 A) i can't give mod powers  - or if i can , i don't know how to

as i said on theother thread my guess is that existing mods might show an interest in these world cup topics

Is Moss's indiscretion visible somewhere online? I couldn't find anything on Youtube.

"Tigers is giving me moderating powers for this thread btw and I run a tight ship."  - lol'd when I read that.

I love the French team and have for years.  Hopefully they'll have another go at Italy and thrash those miserable greasy-haired gits.

With regards to Ireland game, yes, shameless foul play but I think France would have gone through anyway.

Spain is my tip, they have the youth even in their senior side. Fabregas V Gallas. Youth attacking V Aging yet mega experienced defending.

Oh Spain would have to be the favourite, their team was unbeaten in qualification IIRC plus with Euro under their belt. They are definitely a chance to do the 'double' like France in 98/00.

I'm willing to bet that in the next two years, nobody with the surname Henry will be involved in a World Cup winning team in Football or Rugby.

France have struggled for years, couldn't qualify through the group stage and had to cheat to get past Ireland.  The world hates them, the team hate the inept coach (who will now keep his job) and they know their qualification is a hollow one.  Can't see them doing anything to be honest.

I don't want to distract from the hate, but can't really help myself from discussing the likely squad.  If I get banned for this, people should learn from the example.

My finger is on the 'keepers as les bleus' probable weak point  Lloris and Mandanda don't have much international experience, despite their talents.  The other end of the park looks pretty good, with a nice blend of youth (Benzema & Gignac) and experience (Anelka & Henry) up front.

In between, I'm ambivalent. :)

Lloris was probably the best French player in the Ireland play-off.

Mandanda is pants though.

Lloris is very good, especially given how young he is. He'll be one of the best in the world in a few years imo.

In between? Ribry, Gourcuff, Toulalan, the Diarras - there's some quality in there.

Was it Anelka who went into international retirement at a very young age due to being screwed around by national team coaches?  Regardless of whether it was him I think he's a great player.

I didn't follow much of France's qualification, are Djibril Cisse and Sidney Govou likely to be in the squad?

Notwithstanding the poor grammar in Michael's sentence, I am very honoured that you both consider me the greatest.
