After a fairly good World Cup last time the Australians have been arrogant and unbearable.  This should knock them down a notch or two.  Germany looked like they could have done much greater harm to them.  Glad to see Cahill go.  Like him for Everton but a dickhead for Australia.  That tackle could have been a yellow or red, though, depending on the ref.  Wasn't surprised, personally, to see a red, though.

Australia were just slow and bad.  While I don't want to get ahead of myself I think we have a very good chance of doing better than them this year.  That would hurt them a lot.  Their group isn't much tougher than ours, to be honest.  Slovakia could mix it with Ghana you'd think - don't know about Serbia, but if the Serbs played like they did this morning then probably.  Paraguay and Italy would obviously match the top teams in that group as well.

Spot on. It was good to see Australia get dealt to. Their fans will not be happy!

Craig Moore has to be dropped. I said that I was surprised he made the squad and it will be an even bigger surprise if he's retained. To me Aussie got what they deserved. You play without a striker and without the talent and/or discipline to get forward from midfield then what hope have you got. To do it against a side of Germany's quality (however surprising that quality might be to you) is naive. Verbeek screwed up monumentally. Wrong players, wrong system.
(Posted on Aussie thread too, sorry to double up.)

I guess we could, but not easily. We're lot closer to Australia than Slovakia is to Germany.

I thought Neill was worse.  At least everyone knew Moore was sh*t.

Is Pim regretting dropping the only thing Australia have who resembles, however vaguely, a striker?

When I turned on and saw they hadn't bothered with a striker, I lolled.

When Ozil the magician helped the Germans put 4 past them, I lolled.

When Cahill was sent, I lolled.

And I'll still be lolling when they are on the same plane home as us.

Brilliant stuff Germany. Once again you will breeze through the group and be a contender.

Half time 2-0. Fair to say Germany have, in 45 minutes, already looked better than any other side at this World Cup so far.

Have watched up to 55 minutes - Moore is horrendous. 3 or 4 times now he has just drifted off a man and is to slow to recover resulting in a number of chances Germany should have put away. Have to lol at the Aussies who said we would butcher them in the friendly - this mob can dish sure dish it out. Aussie for most cards in the tournament?

The defence is awful, and they don't play any strikers.

I don't get the point of Australia.

Does anybody know for certain whether Cahill misses one match or two for the straight red? Seems to be uncertainty on FFT, I thought it was one match whether it was a straight red or 2 yellows.

No comments on the game, completely outclassed, by seeing the comments here I'm glad somebody enjoyed it.

Hooray. Back from pub. Awesome atmosphere at Fox's Ale House in Auckland. Heaps of Germans/Germany supporters. There might have been some Aussies there but they sure as hell kept shut up. sneakyrat2010-06-14 10:23:15

The only way that could have been any better is if Grella was sent off instead of or in addition to Cahill. I found myself supporting Aus at the last World Cup as a country close to us battling against distant opposition. I thought that might happen again this time, but no way. After their filthy display against NZ in the warmup game, I revelled in the sweet justice handed down today. :)

Me too.
I hate players who play the game with a snarl on their face, and this Aussie squad is full of them; Grella, Cahill, Moore, Neill, in fact the only Aussie players who look like they might actually enjoy playing the game are Brett Emerton and Mark Schwarzer (although not today, obviously...).
What chance Schwarzer getting a move to Arsenal now?

I agree. I'm trying to keep my glee to a minimum. Maybe in a couple of weeks time I'll really let them have it.

Same. I really want to support them, as the underdog and all that, but after MCG I can't hep feel they got what was coming. I suppose Cahill thought he could get away with those sorts of tackles after MCG. He thought wrong. Some of the Aussie players do have a certain maliciousness to them.

I still want to see them do well for 2 reasons, I have good friends over there, and also that football in this area is strong and seen to be strong

Although Cahill's sending off seemed a little harsh to me, exactly what part this bawling out from Pim Verbeek three weeks ago did he not understand?

In the World Cup that's probably two red cards, so it's a good lesson because I cannot accept this of course. The players know this is not the way they should play the game. You cannot afford to go into whatever game and make tackles like that. I cannot find any reason why you should do it.

I am very disappointed in that. We are lucky that it happened today [in a friendly] but it should never happen again in the upcoming six weeks.

Still, I suppose that's natural selection for you...

It was a harsh red. But still a risky challenge.

I love the fact that most of us are delighting in the sh*teness of the roos as opposed to giving kudos to the German's, quite wonderful.

The Socceroo backline was just woeful, they try and play it flat but it seemed that Neill kept holding them onside, with the German's exploiting this with pace and clever runs. I just wish it had been 8-0 which would have been entirely possible!

Bringing it back to NZ (which of course we do)- the difference between us and the Socceroos- surely defensively we are better than them. Up front, with three men, we are better than them. I'll give them Schwarzer, and the midfield, but tactically it seems we have more of an idea- in terms of we know our weaknesses and don't try to do what we can't. I'm probably getting ahead of myself, I mean we'll probably get pumped 4-0 by the Slovaks (reverse jinx), but after last nights performance I can't see Oz being a better side than us, albeit against a quality German outfit.

PS Paulinho, how's work?

I loved this game. Germans played brilliantly. Ripped the Convicts to bits. Could well have been 8-0. And that hit from Podolski, that was travelling!
